Any weapon you touch, you can immediately master.

It doesn't seem like a lame power at first glance, but in a more peaceful world you may as well not even have a power at all.
Weaponry is largely recreational, actually.

Consider Lars Anderson or fencing. I guess you could argue the swords used in fencing don't count as weapons. But there are other examples, like ornamental staff usage or skeet shooting.

I'm just thinking about people I know who are not very into video games (often because they're fairly old) and imagining asking if they know/recognize characters and pikachu just seems like a more likely yes than mario to me.

and when you think about it this way, lara croft is just laughable. probably not even top 100
No, I think top 100 is a pretty safe bet. Maybe even top 20 or 30. Her impact on the hobby was enormous and still around. I mean, if it were most well-written character, she'd probably be bottom 100, but most actually well-written characters come and go in like a game or three while the iconic ones are just the ones that make you feel like an undefeatable badass or have triangle boobs.

Nah I don't buy this whole existence by contrast thing at a fundamental level. It's at best axiomatic, in a "well, because that just makes sense to me" kind of way. But I maintain that making sense to you hardly constitutes proof.

I could absolutely see if, on the contrary, contrast is not necessary to existence. For example, if we lived in a world where the only wavelength of light were exactly 575nm, this being a shade of yellow, we probably wouldn't have a concept of color. It's hard to say; maybe someone could come up with color as a thought experiment, I don't know. After all, we live in a 3D world yet and there are plenty of mathematics relating to 4, 5, 6 and up dimensional geometry.

Anyway. Supposing we didn't have a concept of color, that doesn't mean that wavelength of light isn't yellow. Just that we haven't named it.
