Oh really???!!

Excuse me whilst I laugh at that.

Where do you think the name of that road came from? Oh yeah Derby council needed a name for their new ring road, drew up a shortlist, asked the people of Derby to vote and 89% voted for Lara Croft Way! Yeah the general population of Derby knew who she was!

A poll was taken many years ago in Britain and the top 3 most known game characters known to non-gamers and the general public were 1. Lara, 2. Sonic, 3. Mario

Companies have used Lara to advertise products that had nothing to do with her games.

Oh no Lara is very well known to the general public here in Britain.

I bet every single one of them knew Mario too.

What I want to know is why Crash Bandicoot didn't take off as largely as he should have? Those games were awesome, yet he never made as big of a splash as the most iconic video game characters.

Its because Crash Bandicoot games were never actually good. People just told themselves that to cope with the fact that there were better platformers on the N64.

Dont get me wrong, the PlayStation was the superior console, but it didnt have anything comparable to Mario 64 or Banjo Kazooie.

I don't even think she'd be in the top 10 if we're including Pokmon characters. Pikachu is probably #1

That's the one I'd feel might actually beat out Mario if anybody. Pikcachu/Mario are easily number 1 and 2 and link number 3.

Oh look the Gamefaqs Nintendo fans are having a fit I see.

Whats the matter can't accept the truth that we Brits much prefer one of the most iconic games characters ever over Mario.

So nice to see we Brits go for a British games character.
I'm from the UK I disagree. We don't live in the 90s anymore. Lara may have been popular back then but she really isn't any more. She's as iconic as Agent 47 and Sackboy. Which is to say, not that iconic. My top 5 would have been: Pikachu, Master Chief, Link, Sonic & Mario.

In a world where Asia doesn't exist. Laura Croft is probably still not more iconic than Mario. But Asia does exist, so she definitely isn't.

I dont think Link would be third. Third would have to be someone instantly recognizable to random people on the street. A lot of them would see a picture of Link and say Zelda or Peter Pan.

If I had to guess Id say Pac-Man or Sonic. Or maybe even another Pokmon or Mario character.

It sure as hell isnt Agent 47 though.

Lara certainly had a moment where she was bigger, but that moment came and went a long time ago. Mario has been at the top of the pile for almost the entirety of the time between now and his conception.
No, I don't think she did. She had a moment where she and Crash Bandicoot combined might have been in the same league, but she never had a moment where she was bigger on her own.

The games dropped off in quality HARD the exact moment the sixth gen started. Wrath of Cortex was eh, Nitro Kart was ehhhhhh, and everything after that you could tell from the title or boxart alone was gonna be total garbage.

Same thing happened to Spyro, and Ape Escape, and Sonic had sorta the same thing but in slow motion. I think mascot gaming was just going out of style and publishers/devs were basically playing hot potato to make sure someone else was stuck with them.

I know at least with sega, they started using low budget Sonic games as a cheap ways to raise money. I think they flat out said that Sonic and The secret rings was basically shovelware but they use that money to fund making Sonic unleashed. Mascot characters became a fairly reliable way to make a decent amount of money by pushing out a mid effort game aimed at children.

Ha, I played Secret Rings.

Honestly, the core stages were really fun, but they only accounts for an hour or so of gameplay amid TERRIBLE filler.

Yeah, it had a couple of genuine interesting ideas that just didn't pan out. The plan was that it and black knight were the start of a "story book series" that would be a whole line of low budget Sonic titles on the Wii that they hoped would sell reliably well with kids to create a revenue stream they could use to fund other projects.

This was back after Sonic 06 when Sega was in pretty dire financial straits.

Honestly, the Lara #1 thing has been discussed, so I'll let that one rest.

I'm honestly mostly shocked at the idea of Kiryu being #18 in the world of iconic game characters. Like....the Yakuza series was extremely niche up until Yakuza 0 and LaD catapulted it into the spotlight. Before that I don't think anyone was really talking about it. Even now if you made me gun to my head name the first Yakuza character and who I think more people would recognize, I'd probably say Majima.

I'm just thinking about people I know who are not very into video games (often because they're fairly old) and imagining asking if they know/recognize characters and pikachu just seems like a more likely yes than mario to me.

and when you think about it this way, lara croft is just laughable. probably not even top 100

I'm betting Mario and Pikachu are extremely close though. Only people I see maybe not knowing Mario these days are young people. Like I mean today's kids.

Anyways wanted to say I bet Chun li is more known than Laura and she's not even the protagonist in the game she's in.

No, I think top 100 is a pretty safe bet. Maybe even top 20 or 30. Her impact on the hobby was enormous and still around. I mean, if it were most well-written character, she'd probably be bottom 100, but most actually well-written characters come and go in like a game or three while the iconic ones are just the ones that make you feel like an undefeatable badass or have triangle boobs.

Mario has never been more popular with kids than he is today, even those that have never touched a controller know who he is. Toy stores are filled with Mario related toys, clothing,... He just had a movie released that had them singing Peaches for months. Kids are dressing up as the characters for Halloween and you can actually buy the costumes instead of it being something your mom made.
Thirty years ago, you knew Mario if you were a gamer or if you played the games at a friend's house. Now they just know Mario like they all know who and what Pikachu is.

Lego, plushies, karts in all manners from those "pull back" things to remote control, figurines, action figures, old games I used to have like that wobbly tower where you needed to put figurines on until it tilted but now Mario themed, board games,... Sonic has a ton of toys as well, but Mario easily has him beat on that front.
I don't have kids myself, but a lot of friends and family have like toddlers to 10 year olds right now and once they mature out of Paw Patrol, it's Fortnite, Minecraft, Roblox, Mario and whatever shitty Five Nights At Freddy's rip-off is popular atm.

EDIT: Oh and my best friend's 7 year old is super into Among Us right now a decade after the fact for some reason.
