Today's the first day where multiplatform games started to come to fruition. Now it should get interesting.

Rules

1. You may vote up to 4 entries that fit the prompt.
2. No alts.

4. If you change your vote, clearly indicate that you are changing a previous vote. Same for adding or subtracting picks.
5. In general, if there are two picks that can be considered the same product (i.e. Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Adventure 2 Battle), I will combine them.
6. If a vote is vague, I will pick the first available choice that best matches the vote (i.e. "Mario" for Wii Games becomes Super Mario Galaxy).
7. I will post the parameters of each Rushmore topic. Other than that, feel free to vote however you like and based on any criteria that best fits the "Mount Rushmore" of that topic.

I disagreed with both of those! Also it was GTAIII that made the PS2 Rushmore so that would suggest III instead.

As I said then, there is no real argument for Sonic 1 over Sonic 2 other than it was first. DQ3 was more influential than DQ1. Being first doesn't mean you're the most important or the bigger game.

GTA is a more difficult debate because 3 and SA both have good arguments for inclusion here. San Andreas was a bigger deal though, and I think that matters. This isn't just "what was most influential" to me. This is "what games were the biggest back then."

I mean no, there are plenty of arguments for Sonic 1 over Sonic 2, not least of all the fact that it outsold it by a ratio of about three to one. It was bundled with the console, it was the one with the huge cultural impact. I just didnt feel like raising them!

No kidding

Sonic 2 was a bigger deal then and now. It immediately supplanted Sonic 1 upon release.

Arguing for Sonic 1 is like arguing for Uncharted 1.

GTA3 vs. GTASA kinda feels like Halo 1 vs. Halo 2. Sure, the later one was bigger and had way more hype, but the first one was still huge and changed the genre. Influence matters a lot.

Eh, for this topic specifically, I don't care as much about influence. This is just about this generation. What were the biggest games back then, as well as the ones that still resound today?

People could put Halo 2 in this, especially if you wanted a Xbox Live rep. Do think San Andreas/Halo 2 releasing around the same time is pretty huge too.

in fact theres an argument to be made for Vice City in this, I just picked the game thats considered the gold standard of the trio and the best selling. Also because I think making this too 2001 heavy makes it look really uneven

other good shout outs: MGS2 or 3, FFX, Shadow of The Colossus, could do a lot here

HM to FFX and MGS2 & 3, but can't see past any of these 4 as exemplifying what defined gaming in this gen. The game that defined Xbox and drove an explosion in console LAN multiplayer (for the FPS genre at least), the unimaginably huge MMO, the defining huge open world game, and the most transformative 3D action game.

Circa 2017 I met a guy who said that back in the day with World of Warcraft, if you checked the amount of time he had played during its first year, it was something absolutely bonkers. I dont remember specifically, but I swear, it was like his game time added up to three or four months out of twelve.
