What is or is not an indie game? Surprisingly not too much debate on this, as most accepted Minecraft as an indie game and deserving to be on the Rushmore. 3rd and 4th was a much tougher race and a ton of contenders went for it with Cave Story and Hollow Knight emerging.

I DID consider putting Symphonia on there too but couldn't really justify it being on there over a Xenoblade or Persona game other than bias.

Symphonia was an important RPG for its time, I agree, but it's been outdone by Persona 5 and Xenoblade since.

To me Xenoblade feels like a lock because Project Rainfall was such a big movement, it was one of the few times Nintendo actually listened to the demands of the fans and now Xenoblade is one of Nintendo's major franchises.

I know FGO's a wildly spicy take, but it's the emblem of the single-player gacha RPGs of the 21st century, it's turn-based with leveling, skills, and a heavy story focus. It counts to me

Im not arguing against it, I just dont think of it as such just because its not like others we traditionally think of in the genre

but it is a good choice in spite of that

What's the unique subgenre that Pokmon fits under? Monster collecting? Maybe it's changed over the years but RBY feels like a pretty standard RPG.

Deferring to everyone else on which DQ deserves it since it's a series I haven't played but no one can deny its impact. Xenoblade/that fourth slot is a tough one. Considered Nier Automata and Persona 5 as well - wanted a more modern pick for it - but Xenoblade isn't a bad call IMO.

I'd replace pokemon before DQ tbh, and FF6 over pokemon just isnt gonna be accurate. FF6 is probably my favorite JRPG too besides maybe Lunar 1/2. One Final Fantasy is enough, and 7 gets the top billing. Maybe 10 competes with it (iirc Japan actually votes more favorably for 10 than 7)

I dont see how Persona 5 is even close to these 4 but w/e

You can't leave off Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest.
Pokemon started the pokemon craze, and it's the best selling JRPG franchise by far.
And Persona 5 is the highest rated JRPG on metacritic and basically set the standard for UI design going forward.
