Don't love it as much as many others but it is very neat and cool

The gameplay is pretty cool but as I've never experienced the story in full can't rate.

I don't know how to give this game a fair rating. It does so many things well and so many things terribly, and it has such an iconic status in large part due to its fanbase. Trying to compare it to anything as a basis doesn't work, so it really has to be evaluated completely on its own. In the end, I'm just not sure how to do that.

Torn on a 9.5 or a 10 here, Im sure I could nitpick it but it really was a magical experience. Definitely one of the best RPGs (bring back short RPGs!) and my favourite game that year as well as one of the best of the decade.

Definitely has originality and energy going for it, but it's also just way too cheesy and could have used a little more nuance and subtlety with its themes

All the subtlety of a sledgehammer. "Haha, EXP actually stands for EXecution Points in this game! Don't you feel bad now?"

Other than the music, I will never understand why this game got so popular. Some cool gameplay ideas, some cool moments, but it's all just so pretentious.

Wow, that is certainly a number you can choose

Keep in mind I rated this game a 10 myself.

But if there were ever a super popular game (outside of stuff like CoD and Madden) that I could see someone could rate as a 2, and my first instinct is "that's probably a genuine rating", it would be Undertale.

The game has a demographic and it fuckin' BEELINES it to that demographic, while not bothering to pander to basically anyone else.

Undertale is genuinely a game I wish never got as popular as it did, because it attracts both the haters and the worst parts of the fandom to it. The first couple of months after launch were pretty wonderful.

I do wonder if I would've loved it as much if I hadn't been an early adopter and got taken in as part of the craze.

This applies to pretty much every game.

Every game is affected by the circumstances under which you play it

I doubt FFVIII would've become my favorite game ever if I hadn't been an extremely introverted 13-year-old at the time which allowed me to resonate with Squall in a way I've never done before or since

Eh not really. There are a lot of games that don't really have any sort of culture around them. I can name dozens of games I played 5-10 years late and I don't think I would have liked them any more if I played them fresh.
