It's a fun game when playing it, but it also doesn't stick in my memories like my all-time favorites do

Basically perfect pacing but honestly falls flat in a lot of other things for me-- the characters are super bland, the plot could be a lot better for a time travel story which are generally interesting by default, and the battle system feels aged strangely more than a lot of other SNES RPGs to me anyway. (It feels slower-- lack of screen transitions and the graphics not looking as nice I think makes this worse than others at the time)

Still my go to jRPG to recommend to people as a first one though. I think it's a good litmus test for "will you like this genre" and it's a pretty quick playthrough.

Very fun, I don't quite love it as much as some others but it's extremely quality nonetheless

Does everything very well across the board but doesn't quite excel enough in any area to put it in the absolute top tier. Still an all-around great experience though with a lot of charm to it. I will say that if I were rating RPG's based on which ones had the least flaws then this is probably on the short list for #1.

I tempted ranking this lower because I don't quite connect to this game like some people, but I also can't really justify it, because it still slaps hard.

I was thinking I was gonna be the low score somehow!

But yeah that's basically my feel-- it's objectively good but something was always missing for me

Playing this for the first time in 2023 I was a little disappointed by how little the cast interacts and the overall plot. Battles were fun but it did basically just amount to spamming triple techs.

But yeah I'm sure this was a perfect game when it first released, no question.

I will be very conflicted if I have to rate Secret of Mana, since I generally tag it as my favorite game, but I know it's got some serious flaws. By contrast, CT is a much more flawless game, but I didn't enjoy it as much when I played it. A lot of that is because I tried to play it turn-based, and man, it SUUUUUUCKS with turn-based on. (The counterattacks from Dalton, in particular, are ridiculous in turn-based mode.)
