I'm actually pretty hype for this-- rewatched the original a few years ago and it held up, but I feel like the Wolverine voice isn't right

(Cyclops however is spot on to the point where I would believe it's the exact same VA)

And what's wild is google tells me that it's actually the opposite. Wolverine IS the same guy and the guy who has voiced Cyclops forever is not (RIP Norman Spencer)

So I guess I have a lot of faith in the VA casting now

Well it was just one line he might sound fine in the thing overall.

Hype! Made it halfway on a watchthrough recently, time to finish that up.

I thought it looked good, probably the best cg models trying to look like 2d animation I've seen from Disney yet.
And damn that Cyclops voice really is dead on.

I thought the same thing, Ive retconned his voice in my head to Steve Blum, Im worried Im not going to be able to get over this lol.

I dunno if I'm just an outlier or not, but this looks and sounds like it's kind of bad. Like the scene with Gambit riding (???) on Wolverine is freaking bizarre. I don't know, the whole thing just seems so uncomfortable to watch from a dialogue, to action, to voice standpoint.

This is not what AI looks like. Also, taking still images from animation is stupid.

To be clear I'm not sold by the hype vid 100%. But it sold me about as well as it can.

What the trailer gave me is this
- Knowing the VA will be good
- The animation is good enough and not totally restyled so it feels like a worthy successor
- The tone looks consistent with the original which is good

So like, if all I wanted was more of the old X-Men series, and, to be clear that is what I wanted, this looks like it'll do that pretty well. Will it? Time will tell, but I'm pretty hopeful.

The fact that this doesn't look like shit is a problem. Why does this have dynamic camera pans and lighting? The reason the old X-Men cartoon is so fun to watch is because it's super dumb and looks awful.

I mean most cartoons from the 90s do not look as good as cartoons today.

I am actually a little stunned here. I have watched at least 100 cumulative hours of this show in my life, usually hanging out with friends and having a blast, we quoted it all the time and I love it....I had no idea that it was actually something people thought was really super good though. I thought the point was that is was so over the top silly.

Maybe it's because at least 80% of that watchtime is after I was, like, 24 or so?

Personally I was hoping this would look and sound exactly the same. PREFERABLY still using the old animation on purpose. I guess I should never have even honored the idea of that coming out of Disney, though.

It's legitimately good for a LOT of it. If you're watching it 100% ironically you arguably aren't giving it a chance and are watching it with a group of people that just gets their jollies out of making fun of stuff-- a group of edgelords probably.

Naw I reject that it's somehow a problem that we enjoyed this show a different way.

Is it because of Batman? Is it because I grew up watching this side by side with TAS that I just never took it seriously?

Batman TAS is good too

If you're saying the writing of Batman TAS is on some kind of different level from X-Men I would argue hard with you on that and would actually say X-Men's is generally better, but I'm not gonna cast shade on Batman to be clear. It's really good.

Like there are a LOT of old shows from the 80s/90s era that I would agree with watching in that kinda way. Power Rangers season 1 is stupid as hell but kinda enjoyable in a silly nostalgic way. Early seasons of the Ninja Turtles, the Super Mario Bros Super Show, hell like He-man, there are tons.

X-Men just ain't one of those shows though. Writing is legitimately pretty compelling for a lot of the episodes/arcs. I'd probably be turned off by watching it with people making fun of it constantly.

Not X-Men (I haven't seen the Wolverine show, somehow), but it's genuinely nonsensical that Avengers EMH never caught on and got cancelled. That was primed for success and it had the chops to back it up.

And of course everybody knows Spectacular Spiderman was fantastic, but it did get a pretty good run.

I would also love more X-Men Evo...but there was maybe a time and a place for that.

The only thing I know about this series is the kickass theme song (which they've remixed obviously), and that video that's a montage of Jean fainting and Scott shouting her name.

Just retool the original outline for Netflix' Avatar using X-Men characters, perfect!

So many of the voices sound "wrong", whether they're new actors or not. That's not really a criticism as much as it is that those voices are iconic in my head.

I'm with Lopen on the original cartoon being legit good and fun (and yes some times super over the top and poorly voice acted)

It does some really good adaptations of major comic storylines like Phoenix/Dark Phoenix and Days of Future Past.

It could also be that I have absolutely zero attachment to that era of X-Men as a brand. My X-Men starts at Morrison, I've never read a single issue of Claremont. Maybe I should change that.

Was hype but it seems to be leaning too much into the crappy old school aesthetic, to its detriment. Would def have preferred a new show that looked like Evolution or better (closest would be like Invincible I guess).

This looks better than I would have expected for a 30-year reboot, and look at that viewcount! Millennials are hyped for this.

But yeah, that Gambit/Wolverine piggyback ride is way outta left field and doesn't fit either character. Gambit the loner wouldn't be eager to accept a piggyback, and fuckin Wolverine of all people wouldn't be offering one. It also doesn't make sense in terms of combat strategy or either of their abilities - maybe if it was Colossus or something, but not Wolverine.

Shoulda included a fastball special instead.

The delivery of that Wolverine line was awful. I haven't decided yet if I actually care to watch this.

I'm so mad this is going to be on Disney+ now that they're doing the same password sharing crackdown that Netflix did. I don't want to pay for Disney+ bleh.

Feels like a deliberate choice to emulate the old animation look, CG anim trying to look like 2D anim looks super off when it's too smooth.

You shouldn't judge that based on the trailer, because for some reason that's an extremely common issue in trailers for animated series in general that doesn't always reflect the full product. I'm not sure what the specific cause of it is other than possibly sloppy editing, but it happens so much so consistently with Western cartoon trailers that there must be a root cause.
