Sorry for all the topics lately, I'd normally ask the discord something like this but it's not been working properly for me lately. There's money in my MS account expiring soon, and these are the cheapest games on my wish list. What's worth playing?

I like Spyro-like platformer collectathons, and have been recommended Hat in Time by others with similar tastes.

I am usually fond of the 'Final Fantasy' series.

Hotline Miami is one of those indie hits that passed me by, for some reason I had assumed it a style-over-substance shooter and IDK I never bothered to look further into it. I think it's still beloved, though I've heard 2 is not good.

Hyper Light Drifter sounds like my kind of thing on paper but I've never really heard people talk about it.

I don't know anything about Inscryption beyond it involving card games and having some big twists. Also this one is on sale at the moment.

I really like Outer Wilds and will get the DLC at some point, I just... keep prioritisng other full games over it and idk if it'll live up to the main game.

OK I only know about Shatter because of its kickass soundtrack but I like breaking blocks!

I know next to nothing about Strange Horticulture.

Outer Worlds was fun. Not mindblowing but fun, no idea how the DLCs are.

Never played Stanley! I expect it to have fun dialogue and some puzzles.

Stanley is my favorite of these, but just know it's entirely a walking simulator and doesn't have "puzzles" in the traditional sense.

Echoes of the Eye absolutely lives up to the main game and feels somehow essential. It got my vote! Also I'm pretty sure it took me longer to beat than the entire main game, hah. It's meaty

Hat in Time is probably my favorite 3D platformer ever. Only competition is Spyro: Year of the Dragon. So I guess I also fall into that "similar tastes" category.

AHIT is a grossly overrated and overplayed, and honestly just bad game tbh. I vastly prefer another game they published, Here Comes Niko

stanley is amazing but yeah not a puzzle game at all, it's a meta "art" game. also personally I think there's merit in playing one of the earlier versions before ultra deluxe tbh, ultra deluxe's additional content is more like a sequel than an expansion and it kind of sucks that you can just trigger it before experiencing all of the basegame. also it's a game that is loaded with easter eggs at every moment and the original release allows you to access them easier actually since it the engine it was on had dev console commands and stuff (i recommend the ones that let you zoom in since there's a lot of good assets you can hardly see otherwise)

inscryption also excellent

shatter is the best block breaker so i hope you can give it a shot some day

i haven't actually played the hd version but ff type 0 is very solid too

I don't know about overrated and overplayed. It's the best 3-D Mario game not made by Nintendo. Certainly out of what's been popularized in the last few years. I haven't tried Neko yet, but it didn't appeal to me the way AHIT did.

I picked AHIT before reading your synopsis, but I doubt my opinion changes any. The only other game there that I've experienced and that I might recommend is Stanley, but I feel like that's a less universal option. Maybe I should have considered Type-0 for you because it's FF, but I haven't played it.

I like a good walking sim so I'm still interested in Stanley, but thanks to those who corrected me, I don't know why I thought it was a puzzle game. I don't have a PC so it would have to be Ultra Deluxe I'm afraid!

Hat is the clear poll winner here, though I've looked and it usually goes on sale for 50% off every few months so I may get one of the others now and pick it up the next time it's discounted (probs in Dec).

There's a clear top 5 and the rest are way behind, does anyone have any more thoughts on the bottom 4? Are they still worth playing or should I clear them off my list. I'm leaning to keep Shatter on there with UF8's comments.

Hat for sure, then Hotline to contrast, then Inscryption to cool down, then Outer Wilds DLC

imo the Outer Wilds DLC didn't end up amazing compared to the main game but it's good. The others are worth playing more.

You could also try Hotline first just to get it out of the way. It's def style but lots of substance too. Only thing is it might not have aged the best. But it's a landmark in games history.

Oh Stanley is ridiculously good too. This is a good set of games.

Hyper Light is meh. Talk about style over substance.

A Hat in Time is awesome and anyone who spreads lies about it like UF8 did becomes a candidate for my ignore list. Sure, I didn't love it as much upon replay, but the amount of love put into it is something special, and it's just a feel good game. You absolutely should get that whenever it's on sale (I wouldn't know since I've had it since launch).

I haven't actually played the others. I'm way behind on many other things...

A Hat in Time is the proper winner of these 10 choices.

I will elaborate on Inscryption though, because I have strong feelings toward it.

It is the kind of game where your mileage will vary based on what kind of stuff you've played. If you are a BIG card game and board game fan, you will definitely find it lacking, because it simplifies a lot of mechanics in superior games. But it's made to appeal to a casual fanbase that hasn't really discovered that type of game yet. Think of it as a watered down version of MTG, mixed with those mobile escape room games from 15 years ago. It is better or worse depending on your prior history in the strategy card game genre.

As a card game and board game fan I disagree, I think the presentation more than makes up for how it "simplifies" things and the card games themselves are still quite fun.

I mean, if you've ever played an escape room game (digital or real life), then you will find the mystery hilariously basic.

I'm not shitting on the game per se. But you really have to be lacking in multiple genres of games to really appreciate it, because if you have experience in any of them, you will find it so plain.

You are though. It is a really good game with an experience you can't get anywhere else, but it's not a card game experience. That's all you need to know to play it. If you can't appreciate that because of some sad ego thing, that's a different issue.

I feel like saying "experience you can't get anywhere else" isn't exactly an honest praise. It mixes a basic card game with a basic escape room. Some people might like a game like that with several genres, but some might also like them fine tuned. If I made a game that was light gun rail shooter mixed with The Sims, it might be unique, but I don't think it automatically is good out of principle.

Sad about that ad hominem at the end.

You claimed I only liked the game because I have no experience in the genres even though I have a ton. It's definitely an egocentric statement although I know that's not your intention.

The point is it's more than the sum of its parts, and it's sad not to be able to appreciate that. It's like people who go to high end restaurants and are like "I've had steak and potatoes before so what's the point"

Hat's parts are also all mediocre tbh. But it's one of the most more-than-sum game ever. It's pure magic and everyone should try it.

Did did you actually finish Inscryption? Calling the stuff outside the card game a basic escape room is incredibly disingenuous.

the mechanics of Inscryption arent even the point anyway. Its more of a narrative game with some framing gameplay than anything else.

The Stanley Parable is a perfect game of its genre, and Ultra Deluxe is an admirable follow-up. I immediately purchased it as soon as I heard about it when it released, and I wasn't disappointed.

Hotline Miami 1 was rad.

I didn't get into A Hat In Time much...seemed okay enough, just didn't connect.

The answer is Outer Wilds DLC.

I've seen some people prefer the base game, I've seen some people prefer the DLC. I've seen some people just not differentiate and love them both.

I think I've only ever seen one person actively dislike the DLC compared to the base game, but they were a special case.

I strongly disagree. Inscryption is a love letter to those bigger card games like MTG and Hearthstone and remixes their mechanics in fun and interesting ways (even if it doesn't have the depth of any of them individually) while doing its own thing at the same time. You get more milage from it having played the stuff it's referencing, not less. I don't think it makes sense to directly compare Inscryption to other card games in a vacuum of pure game mechanics...and it misses the point of the game.

That said, I voted for Outer Wilds DLC. Inscryption would be my #2 though.

I've not played many card or board games, and certainly nothing like Magic or Hearthstone. I don't know if that would make my Inscryption experience better or worse now!

But I'll almost definitely get Hat, Stanley and Outer Wilds at some point going off of comments. Probably Inscryption too, and Type-0 has a lot of votes despite not many users offering it high praise. Still not decided which I'll spend my expiring money on, but I'll see which of the ones in contention go on sale the most/least often and probs go off of that.
