How do you render a verdict without listening to the testimony of the most important witness? I think you need to just listen to him, and then rule against him.

I think the Trump strategy of pushing for a mistrial/reversible error that can be appealed might be working. From media reports, the judge seems to want Trump to answer yes or no questions and not explain his answers, and is even threatening to refuse to listen to his testimony entirely.

trump admitted on the stand to viewing the documents and demanding changes be made to lower values which he later inflated for different purposes. he is just a moron who couldn't help but dig his own grave. the judge has wide latitude and can make a person who is testifying answer questions if they refuse or dismiss them.

the trump org is getting the corporate death penalty and he will end up losing all of his new york assets to a receivership. he was likely already solely depending on campaign contributions, but this will make him obviously insolvent on paper as well and it's hilarious he is so dumb he walked right into the trap

Back from lunch and same pattern - journalist initial reaction was maybe it was calmer and then that illusion broke after a couple minutes. You'd think they'd learn!

He went on his standard "New York is crime-ridden and people are dying and leaving" rants along with calling the judge hostile and telling the AG lawyer questioning him he "should be ashamed of himself." The Judge says he's following Williams (the lawyer insulted) on statements like that (on a previous insult the AG's team said they wouldn't bother motioning to strike the answer because they wanted to cover more ground) and again they say they're fine.

There was also a moment where the AG's lawyer had to ask, "Are you testifying these [documents you certified] are inaccurate?" when Trump's typical bragging had him testify that actually he was worth more than they said and he had to walk it back slightly to say they were accurate except for the fact they didn't include "brand value."

He and his lawyers also continue to push (another) rejected argument - that there was no victim here: the banks got their money and "Everyone is happy." But as the pretrial ruling stated - if he misrepresented his finances and received better terms for the loans than he would have had he provided an accurate accounting then the reality is the banks should have gotten more money than they got. Also retreading the same arguments that were ruled against before (and that they've been bringing up all day - and all trial really)

AG finishes questioning Trump and the defense says they will not cross-examine so Trump is now off the stand. They're off tomorrow (Election Day) but when they come back on Wednesday the next (and last expected to be called by the AG) witness is Ivanka.

"No."

If Donald doesn't give straight answers here in court when surrounded by evidence, when will he ever give a straight answer?

I get letting him talk and ruling afterward, but I very much get letting clear answers be his talk and not letting this be another space he can mumble-stumble his way through. He's got a legal team to help him make his other points if they're that relevant to his innocence.

I panicked and researched school board candidates for a half hour the other day only to eventually realize the election was back in April

In regards to earlier discussions of Trump polling ahead of Biden:

All match-up polls are irrelevant for one very simple reason. No one is talking about is how much of a disaster his running mate will almost certainly be. Remember that the first time around he wanted Newt fucking Gingrich of all people. His kids talked him down into Pence and given how that ended no one will ever be able to change his mind this time. Nikki Hailey is probably his best case scenario and I don't see him going for it.

I can't imagine Republicans are going to care much about Trump's running mate.

I'm pretty anxious about what will happen if the Democrats don't at least keep the Senate here. Youngkin is basically DeSantis but in the phase of pretending he isn't.

Deep blue district here, so vote also doesn't have a big impact.

Let's hope the more purple areas got the right votes.

I other news, Mississippi is a shit show.

Not that the results are unexpected, but the actual state of the election structure there is a joke. Tens of thousands sent to the wrong polling place. Dozens of locations running short on ballots, and when requesting an extention in the voting time to get more, being shut down by the court. Huge swathes of people in 80%+ minority counties unable to vote due to either incompetence, racism, or more likely incompetent racism.

Yeah, it looks like Dems will have a two seat lead at least in both. All campaign messaging from Democrats included credible comments from most of their Republican opponents about their willingness to pass total abortion bans. Meanwhile Republicans touted claims that their Democrat opponents "want more criminals on the streets." There was almost nothing else across all campaigns I saw advertisements for. Youngkin meanwhile kept going around declaring that a 15 week abortion ban was a "common sense consensus that Virginians could come together on." Apparently not!

Also a little victory from my county: In a school board race in a pretty conservative district, a woman who campaigned on a policy of "increasing transparency on mental health issues with parents" which very clearly included a belief in outing trans kids to their parents lost by 12 votes.

We had some pretty good results. Unfortunately, a local district elected school members who support banning books from school libraries. And a local election where the incumbent lost the democratic primary but won the republican primary ending up winning. Name recognition does a lot for voters in the general.

Election results seem like good stuff from what is being posted in this thread! I truly think that people around the world, even people who are not necessarily especially liberal are getting tired of the socially regressive, culture war stuff as a political priority. Its a global economic crisis and you cant eat an abortion ban. Also generally I think more people are motivated by things that directly affect them or people they know than want to govern the lives of others (not that that isnt a sizeable minority). The conservatives either didnt win or struggled to win with the demographics they were supposed to win with and I think thats the reason.

And yeah that house vote is embarrassing. Would have failed by one vote if every Dem voting had voted against. Total lack of solidarity.

Thank goodness they arent smart! Its a global crisis and sitting governments are getting punished all over the world. This should be easy for the Republicans and theyre bungling it. Good riddance.

The weird thing is economic messaging, justified or not, has been the crux of most of their successes for like 4-5 decades and they just sort of forgot all that after Trump won one time.
