In any case, Zidane is a good character. Not perfect by any means, but good. I forgive a lot of his earlier creepiness because (IX spoilers) that ending cutscene where Dagger pushes through the crowd to embrace him is so cute.

Edge being a creep is the most tangible awful thing from him that I can point to in order to justify my hatred, but the real reason I dislike him is that he's lame. He brought down every single scene that he was in.

I'm not sure Rydia isn't into it any more than Dagger isn't into it aside from Rydia probably just not being into romance in general.

It's basically the same situation for 95% of the game. Edge is just less aggressive about it and a more minor character but I don't think Edge is really a creep towards her and the implication is that Rydia cares about him (in a "firmly in the friend zone" kinda way) and is annoyed by him at times at worst.

Edge with proper main character status probably ships with Rydia cause that's the story they'd tell but yeah I really don't think Edge steps out of bounds and knows when to stop (which is good cause a Zidane x Rydia matching would be super uncomfortable)

I'm just glad that the character who hits on Rydia is one of the only ones who never knew her as a child. It's much worse if it's Cecil or Edward hitting on her.

Based on your ratings, I think you just don't like 'badass' type male characters very much. This is the opposite of Lopen, who rates primarily on cool character designs.

Too many Terra haters

She's no Celes but I think she's got a pretty interesting arc, particularly for 1996 or whenever FFVI came out.

I love me some badasses though I think I have a mix. Algus is not a badass design but he's awesome. Lightning and Auron have a great design but are kinda middling to me.

Her Arc actively hurts the character for me.

Green haired generic badass girl who turns into a pink rage monster would probably be a 5.5/10 minimum (Terra's design is actually pretty appealing to me)

I do love some badass dudes! Cyan, Auron, Squall, and Cloud are all great. Also, I'd argue that most of my 1/10s aren't badasses. Laguna can't talk to a lady without his legs cramping. One of Cid's primary character traits is taking naps. Wakka (in my playthrough at least) never won a single Blitzball game.

Terra is good. Not great, but good. It's kind of unfortunate she became the de facto main character for Dissidia content because Celes could've filled the role better since she has an actual rivalry with Kefka, but alas.

Definitely way better than Noctis as far as main characters go, so it's a shame she ended up below him.

Cid Highwind - 6.78
Kain Highwind - 6.86
Aranea Highwind - 6.92

Cid ranks below Zack, which isn't too surprising given Zack has his own game. But one of the weaker Final Fantasy VII characters so far.

Kain finishes above Cecil, and just below Ashe. Only Rydia has done really well of the Final Fantasy IV cast.

Aranea rates highest of the Highwinds, and highest of the Final Fantasy XV character so far. Rating just a little higher than Noctis. And she wasn't even a full time party member! Maybe she should've been.

Rikku moves up in the Top 10, but Cloud and Aerith remain in their second and third spots.

I wonder if there's any character that comes close to Vivi. That score almost seems like a statistical error compared to the rest.

Yeah, I doubt there's a character that's his level of beloved because he has relatively few detractors compared to other really popular characters in the series.

Nobody really hates Vivi. I don't think anyone's going to threaten him tbh. His lowest score was a 4. After that, it was a 6. That's pretty crazy.

Aranea doesn't do anything to be disliked. Which is to say she doesn't do anything besides look cool.

Definitely. There's a version of XV where she and Iris are playable. I feel like her status as "highest of the highwinds" is certainly due to no anti / power voting

Iris doesn't make any sense as a main party member either story wise or gameplay wise. She was like half a step above what Tifa and the Shinra soldiers were in the Nibelheim flashback.

I mean this is a series with Relm and Eiko as party members.

But then in the "Do you like this character" leaderboard Vivi is the 14th highest Final Fantasy character (and 2nd highest FFIX behind Zidane) with 82%

Vivi should have been the main character. Maybe not entirely as-is, but the themes to his story are the main themes of the game.

Well yeah, that's what makes him a good supporting character. He magnifies and embodies the themes of the game. Aerith fills the same role for FFVII.

Vivi is the first character you control (for a decent length of time) and his journal caps off the ending. He's not the main main, but he's integral.

Squall also fits the same role in ff8!

I think cloud has enough stuff going on for himself, and aerith greatly affects him much more than Vivi affects Zidane's story.

Zidane is like the mentor to Vivi, so it feels like Zidane could have been the great supporting character to Vivi's main.

Alternatively Zidane's development during disc 3 could have been a lot more cohesive!

FF9 kind of has an ensemble cast, much like FF6. I don't think the game would work as well without one.

Nah, FFIX has a cast where half the characters are relevant and half aren't, so it's unique in that regard. Zidane is definitely the main character. You can't really dispute it.

Vivi wouldn't work as the driving lead in the game, and if he was considered the main character, he'd suddenly start getting flack like Vaan or Terra.

Also, 6 isn't really an ensemble either (in my opinion obvs). It's Terra's game and then it's Celes's game.

FFXIII is probably the closest the series has to a true ensemble cast. Lightning became the poster child for the game, but the story is truly about all of them and their collective struggle.

I think V is an ensemble.

Nah, Bartz is the hero. He's just a boring one.

It's Terra's game for about 3 hours and then she becomes a plot device/supporting character more than the protagonist

Yeah, but they could actually fight. Iris just stands there and occasionally heals or participates in link strikes. They'd have to completely overhaul her role to make her a main party member, as opposed to Aranea where she probably could've stuck around the entire time after she joins as a guest.

Aranea can stick around if you use the glitch!

Unless Royal Edition got rid of it.

Finishing up my XIII replay and I agree, though if not a "ensemble" game, I almost need to credit Vanille as lead? Really feels like she has the most plot and character-connection relevance, best moments, and I had forgotten all about her giving voiceover narration bits throughout the game!!!

(Though all that being said, probably also my own bias on how much I like her...)
