Man, people liked Edgar a lot more than I would've guessed. I didn't like him even before he started checking out little girls!

tbh I played it as a kid, and took it as him saying "I hope you live to be an adult". There's another character who's kind of creepy when you really think about it, but i'll get into that when we get to them.

that's the main issue for all tactics characters not named ramza or delita. they're all interesting and cool but once their story time is done they just become overpowered units

It's worse for Agrias because you get her so early. But then most of my fav Tactics characters are ones who never join the party full time so yeah you're not wrong!

I always took Edgar's womanizing as projection to cover up his deep insecurities over being King and the death of his parents

there's gross stuff for sure but it doesn't cross the line into pedo territory for me, which many characters from other JRPG franchises do

Is hitting on women that gross? He doesn't molest anyone, IIRC, and kings historically have abused that privilege to have any woman they want, which Edgar definitely doesn't do.

but Edgar isn't that level at all, he's more like Zelos Wilder where the flirting is a facade of a more serious / cunning character underneath (like collider says basically, although I'd say it's less of a facade than it is for Zelos, but also less severity than Zelos as well)

I don't remember the specific line, but telling a young child they're going to be handsome/beautiful when they grow up used to be pretty innocuous.

But then there are some weird things out there (like what gmun just posted), so I get the hesitation.

They changed Edgar's line towards Relm in more recent translations. I think that's a good sign that it was too creepy for modern sensibilities

Here's the scene in question in the GBA translation:

In the OG Japanese version the last line is instead

Edgar: Yeah, thatd definitely be a crime I better just forget about it.

...And I recall a random little girl in one of the castles who says Edgar promised to marry her when she grows up.

Irvine finishes ahead of Zell, but well behind his other Final Fantasy VIII compatriots.

Sazh rates the highest of the Final Fantasy XIII cast so far, and nearly cracks the Top 10. Well beloved character, with few who dislike him.

The Admiral ranks lowest of the FFXIV cast so far, which isn't too surprising given the other characters we've done.

Sounds about right for Sazh. I've always preferred Vanille, but Sazh has almost as much favourability without having the amount of detractors Vanille gets.

Meliadoul is our first low rated FFT character. With her ranking between Eiko and Amarant.

Luneth just barely manages to rate higher than Vaan, making Hope only the third lowest rated character now.

Squall moves down on the Top 10 list, and out of the Top 5.

Yeah, people can vote for past characters. That way if someone is busy one day and misses it, they can go back and rate them. and if someone is currently playing a game in the series and wants to wait until they finish the game to vote, they can do that as well. (I imagine this might be the case once we get to some FFXVI characters.)

Yeah I'd say 7 is average.

The actual average is 6.35. Nobody has rated above a 9 yet, and nobody has rated below a 3. Also feels like Lenna is just a recolor of Maria tbqh. Well and she has a Dragon. Which is pretty cool.

1-3 is a ranking of dislikes, 7-10 is a ranking of likes

For me, 4-6 is below average but still generally enjoyable to varying degrees. 1-3 is for characters I dislike.

This exactly. 5 is just "neither bad nor good" hence why I gave Vaan that score :p.

6.5 is probably an average FF character for me as I tend to like them more often than not. But 5 is my neutral. I have only been doing multiples of .5 for my ratings cause I don't want to overthink but here's where I'd be putting stuff

9.5 - 10 All time great character in general. I'd possibly buy a game or read a book entirely because it's based on that character if they made a spinoff based on it.
8.5 - 9 Great FF character and a key draw to playing their game.
7.5 - 8 Very good FF character but if you replaced them the game is probably OK. I would say characters at this level or higher tend to be the only ones I use in my party unless there is some pressing need to use others.
6.5 - 7 Good FF character but something about it doesn't quite click with me or there is an irritating flaw.
5.5 - 6 Mostly neutral but there is something I like about the character's gameplay or design or whatever.
5 Completely neutral feeling basically. I don't have a lot of characters I'd rate a straight 5.
4 - 4.5 I don't hate these but they are likely bland or lacking something to make them appealing. This is my "meh" zone just nothing to be excited about but could be worse.
3 - 3.5 Characters that are somewhat annoying or aggressively bland but are not so bad that they are dragging the game down.
2 - 2.5 Very bad characters. They never enter my party if I can avoid it even if it actively hinders me to leave them out. Games they're in would be better if they were removed.
1 - 1.5.Some of the worst characters of all time, FF or otherwise.

She is disliked by a lot of people (myself included). Unfortunately, she is also well liked by many others for reasons beyond me.

Yuffie is confusing but acceptable

It's the people who drop in and slam down their only 10/10 for Lightning that make me question things

I felt bad for giving a lot of 1s lately, but I think there will only be one more! Edge from FFIV, Shadow and Edgar from VI, Cid from VII, Laguna from VIII, no one from IX, Wakka and Jecht from X, no one from XIII.

I've never really thought about it, but I guess I hate them all because I dislike them as people. I hate Shadow, Laguna, and Jecht because they each abandoned their children (well I guess Jecht's wasn't on purpose, at least I don't think it was, but he was an awful dad in any case so yeah). Shadow and Jecht are huge pieces of shit on top of that, Laguna is at least only incredibly lame. I hate Wakka because of racism, Cid because of abusiveness, Edgar because he's a pedophile, and Edge because he was a huge creep towards Rydia (and, like Laguna, incredibly lame).

I feel like bad characters don't usually merit hate. Jihl Nabaat is a bad character because she gets so little development and doesn't add anything to the story, but I'll probably still give her a 3/10 or whatever.

I think there's only one character other than Vaan I'd give a 1 to. In fact I wonder if they might be the one to rate lower than Vaan.

Laguna didn't abandon his son. He literally didn't realize he had a son until the events of the game. What an odd criticism considering he journeyed across the world to save a girl who wasn't even his biological daughter.

If you're talking about Ellone and Raine, he couldn't have known Raine was going to die shortly after he sent Ellone back to Winhill, which he thought would be the best thing for her, and he wasn't allowed to leave Esthar. By the time he learned what happened, there was nothing he could do.

If you want to (apparently repeatedly) criticize Laguna just for being lame, that's fine, but your other criticism isn't true.

Also I've always found it weird that people pound the "Wakka racist" card and don't seem to care that he clearly grows out of it. I guess it's the unforgivable sin.
