Feels like more houses have these now and everything i say or do is being recorded. Sister showed me how even at the end of her driveway she can still hear me from the door cameras mic. Im tired of losing my privacy. As if smart phones werent bad enough i cant be in a neighborhood without being recorded.

I sometimes wonder how well super-reflective material could mess with them. I know a lot of reflective stuff tends not to photograph well because cameras automatically adjust to the amount of light they throw out and that darkens everything else, but I don't know how much it would take to actually consistently blind them.

Yeah there are a few houses around me that every time I walk by them play the "Hi! You are currently being recorded!" message, and I can even hear it when I'm across the street. Makes me wonder how many cameras are recording me and aren't playing that message.

Yeah it's pretty disturbing just how much of our daily lives are being recorded without any signs of it. It's one of the worst things about the modern technology. A lot of the technology we came up with in the late 20th/early 21st century will be viewed as a mistake in 100 years, if even that long.

I'm not saying it's going away, I'm saying the vast majority of people will view it as a mistake as it gets worse.

Though at some point, whether it's 500 years, 500,000 years, or more we will see another collapse of society, nothing lasts forever afterall

At least some people are already there. I'm reading this thread and confused what everyone is so disturbed by. I don't see a significant difference from being filmed for a few seconds and passing by someone on the side walk.

That's what I'm saying though. The regular setting watches you by default. It generates a video for you to watch anytime someone walks within range of your camera. You can even go live and actively listen to them whenever

Disagree.

As a culture we went from everyone constantly worrying about the government forming a police state and installing cameras everywhere to everyone constantly carrying around a phone they use to take pictures of themselves and post literally everything they do on social media.

We've given up all pretense of privacy, and the younger generations barely even understand the concept. Once the last few old holdouts die off, there'll be no one left to complain about being constantly monitored and recorded.

If you want to see the path the future is going to take, just look at algorithms that look at everything you watch and everything you search for, then go out of their way to recommend things they think you'll like - and the people who gleefully love the convenience of that. The future is that, only more refined - until the algorithm knows more about you than you know about yourself, and has mastered the art of selling things to you. And you'll love it for it.

I guess at least with the sidewalk scenario you're being seen by someone you can also see. A lot of people are uncomfortable being watched by someone they don't know is watching

Is it me, or have routers made it kind of a pain in the ass to host anything? It seems like the need to manually go in and set up port forwarding has set up the entire "cloud" industry for success

You should be able to host a website by clicking on it like an exe.

Anyway Ring doorbells should not send video streams outside of the lan for security reasons but I'm sure they all do, and I'm sure it's all recorded, so police can just spy on you if they have a warrant, and I'm sure pervert Ring employees are jerking off to your family.

I'd like to get a security camera, but don't trust any company w/ my data.
How feasible are local storage systems these days? Ideally something that isn't attached to the camera itself but is hidden somewhere in the house, so the criminal is unlikely to find it.

They are very creepy. I think it wouldn't be as bad to me if they were closed-circuit but given that it all routes back to Amazon's cloud and is available to Amazon to do with as they please, I don't care for it.

If I'm not mistaken, the legal ownership of the data is still up in the air so if the police or whatever request the info - they can provide it freely.

If it has night vision with an infrared emitter, a retroreflective vest will dazzle the hell out of it. It won't do anything for daylight or passive IR.

A laser pointer can also dazzle a camera. Since most cameras attempt to adjust for brightness, the super bright laser beam will cause the rest of the image to become extremely dark.

When I worked for a company that made video surveillance equipment, I toyed with the idea of embedding IR LEDs into a hat. Most cameras detect IR the same as visible light, and if you can produce enough IR, it might mask your face.

Most of the people I've seen complain about privacy are younger. Older people are like "I don't have anything to hide because I don't break the law though????"

Nifty. I guess it does make sense that they can't be totally defeated by a shiny vest, since that'd make them pretty useless. Lasers dazzling them is expected, but not altogether practical unless I'm planning to attack a specific camera (which I'm not), but the IR LED idea is an interesting one. Any idea what that would do to collision detection features in cars?
