FE4 is my favorite FE game for total nonsense reasons, but that wouldn't have been the case if I wasn't using fast forward constantly lol.
My reasons are pretty clear. The maps are literally epic. The relationship mechanics are really fun, actually make a difference, and they make the most boring part of the game (moving large distances) it's own kind of puzzle. The characters are really cool and distinctive, and there's a ton of secrets you can find all the time, including characters with whole storylines. Like Ayra was my fav by far, and the fact that she's totally optional makes her feel way more interesting.

The new FEs do have some of that afaik, but it just doesn't land the same way. The scope feels so tiny due to the map size.

All this talk about fast-forward, I want to make it explicitly clear that FFXII more than ANY other game needed it:

huge empty open areas with slow walking
extremely slow atb gauge charging
a battle system where you don't press buttons

I very rarely use 1.5 speed in any other game, except maybe Trails replays

Evrae is such a god damn brilliant fight

I loved the Evrae fight. Not sure why Tidus and Rikku were the only ones who could give commands. I mean I am, but also come on. They should've found a different way to flavor that honestly. I wonder if they tried other stuff.

There were so many great bosses towards the end of the game. I wish they did more wacky stuff sooner. Spectral Keeper (the one with the glyph mines) is amazing.

I dunno if this is a hot take but Yunalesca is fun and easy

She is fun, but it's not necessarily easy to juggle the zombie status with the exact turn order to survive Megadeath. And if you mess that up you have to redo a really long fight, not to mention the unskippable cutscenes.

FF12 doesn't have a slow ATB gauge if you adjust the system settings. At that point, the problem is that the gauge goes up too fast, and some animations get stuck waiting in the queue to finish.

I still think FFIX needed it more

You do press buttons in FFIX but the sluggish animations take up 95% of time-- just to start a fight you're waiting 30 seconds of camera panning around .

At least in FFXII stuff happens while you're not pressing buttons. FFIX is just waiting for the effect of the button you pressed.

There's nothing wrong with this take.

Final Fantasy XIV is my favorite game in the franchise easily, and I don't regret my 1300 hours and counting one bit, but not everyone has that kind of time (nor do they have the 4-500 hours for just a regular campaign and mains raid/trial series playthrough).

There's a big difference between just saying you don't have the time or want to play it, and saying that it just sucks because it's an MMO and everyone who loves it for the story and characters is wrong (not in this topic but this kind of rhetoric is common).

And I know the stance well because personally, a week prior to starting XIV, my stance on MMOs were they were not legitimate games and everyone who played them was experiencing Stockholm syndrome.

But this is my third attempt at an MMO, and I still have no idea how to approach these kinds of games. And they're mad intimidating, because idk if they have any good stopping points, or how long it would take to even get to those stopping points

Since you made a Hrothgar I guess you've actually bought the game, so that's a start lol.

Honest to God it's best to treat it just like it's a single player game, albeit a super long one. There's tons of excellent side content, but the Main Scenario is the best content, and you can always go back to stuff once you're done with it the game since it levels you back down to it. You're only actively playing with other people when you're doing dungeons, bosses, and raids, so you can just stop whenever you feel like it just like you were stopping while playing FFX or VI or whatever.

And if you're worried about how you'll perform with other people, just pick a DPS class and nobody will care lol. You can always swap to a tank or healer later if you want (one character can play and level every single job, I've got every job in the game to cap). You'll get so many free tomes to buy gear to carry you through the game as you play that you won't need to spend a dime, and there's nothing actually challenging in the main scenario until....to be honest, Shadowbringers? At least through casual play where most of the members of your party will have gear scores well above the minimum for everything. There WERE some fucked up old dungeons in A Realm Reborn that could fuck you over, but I think most if not all of those have received full revamps over the last year.

Recommending FF14 is weird because it theoretically wouldn't take someone *that* long to complete. Not compared to the insane hours some people post about, anyway. Playing just the main story and maybe some side quests here and then is 'only' five full-length JRPGs strapped together. You don't NEED to do the insane amount of side content. I've seen people here marathoning the Yakuza series and that's way crazier to me.

Some people who start FF14 absolutely would be sucked in regardless and do all the side stuff, though, so it's not a recommendation I can make without recognizing the potential for it to drain someone's time.

The length gets twisted because people always insist that the side content is good and very worth doing, and they are correct, but there's no reason you need to do it as soon as it unlocks, it's always gonna be there. The only side content you have to engage with outside of Crystal Tower is your job quest, and...yeah, to be fair, the quality there varies. You can sure skip all the Paladin cutscenes and won't be missing anything of value.

Oh, no, not like....the SIDE sidequests.

Yeah it's a wierd terminology situation.

The Blue Sidequests are the ones that are actual content, and not just small pitances of experience points in a game that's main scenario quest will already have you hitting cap 40 hours before reaching the end. Some of those are worth doing, but it's like 5% of them.

Honestly you can go your entire playthrough without doing a single gold sidequest outside of the tutorial. The only time I ever did gold sidequests outside of ARR's start was when I pre-completed 20 of them right before Endwalker came out so I could turn them all in for exp on Reaper at launch.

I take wierd pride in having run Netflix Roulette for Reaper experience points literally 25 minutes after Endwalker launched, lol. Literally the last thing any player would ever want to do at the time you would think, but the queue sure did pop in seconds.

As someone who once considered FFT their favorite video game, this is probably my hottest take for the franchise.

There was a long time where I just thought that I hated War of the Lions, and blamed it and its script for why I wasn't feeling it at all anymore.

Then I made the depressing realization that I had not once EVER played the game without taking full advantage of the JP glitch on the PS1 version.

Playing fresh last year, and not having access to that, and really taking in the actual system....made me realize just how awful the JP system is in execution. It's worse for some jobs then others, but some are just BAD. Archer and Dragoons ability setup is baffling, everything about Chemist unlocks feels like you're wasting time, and the only way to realistically unlock some of the highest requirement jobs for use in a normal playthrough is to spend hours having your characters punch eachother in a corner barefisted while you continuously petrify the last goblin.

However, I still absolutely adore the core of this game. My love for it back when I WASN'T having to engage with the JP system attests to that. After the astounding quality of the Tactics Ogre rerelease, I can't think of a game I want to see re-released with a tuneup more than FFT...

Well, FE4 actually, but were probably actually getting that so FFT can take it's place.
