But this is my third attempt at an MMO, and I still have no idea how to approach these kinds of games. And they're mad intimidating, because idk if they have any good stopping points, or how long it would take to even get to those stopping points

Since you made a Hrothgar I guess you've actually bought the game, so that's a start lol.

Honest to God it's best to treat it just like it's a single player game, albeit a super long one. There's tons of excellent side content, but the Main Scenario is the best content, and you can always go back to stuff once you're done with it the game since it levels you back down to it. You're only actively playing with other people when you're doing dungeons, bosses, and raids, so you can just stop whenever you feel like it just like you were stopping while playing FFX or VI or whatever.

And if you're worried about how you'll perform with other people, just pick a DPS class and nobody will care lol. You can always swap to a tank or healer later if you want (one character can play and level every single job, I've got every job in the game to cap). You'll get so many free tomes to buy gear to carry you through the game as you play that you won't need to spend a dime, and there's nothing actually challenging in the main scenario until....to be honest, Shadowbringers? At least through casual play where most of the members of your party will have gear scores well above the minimum for everything. There WERE some fucked up old dungeons in A Realm Reborn that could fuck you over, but I think most if not all of those have received full revamps over the last year.
