Anyway my hot take is that FFV is the worst of the SNES trilogy

edit: which now that I think about it probably isn't a hot take at all except among extreme FF fans.

No Sephiroth is definitely the villain. Just one birthed, literally and figuratively, by other villains.

Rinoa is the second best FFVIII character.
Vanille is best FFXIII character
FFX-2 was a good game
FFTA was a good game and Marche was right.

I agree Seymour isn't the main villain of FFX, but the game would be better if he was

Ah, I assumed you were referring to Shinra as the main villains there (and I do find them to be better antagonists than Sephiroth)

Anyway here's some more

Balthier is an annoying character.
Delita did nothing wrong.
I have no strong opinion on Eiko.
Moogles aren't cute enough to be the mascot of the series.
Lightning Returns is the best entry in the XIII trilogy.
Krile is a pretty good character.
X-2's battle system isn't anything special.
Vanille is far and away the best of the 'ditsy' archetype characters.

FF4 is straightforward and average.

Final Fantasy VIII is the best game in the series

Squall is the best character in the series

X-2's battle system isn't anything special.

When you realize that anyone including enemies using almost any non-basic attack ruins the neat (for the time) simultaneous actions, this is very true.

I think my only hot takes os that XV is really good and the battle system in XIII makes it by far the worst.

The NES trilogy is actually great, middle of the series

I enjoyed the 13 trilogy more than 7-10

ffix isn't just a bad final fantasy on practically every level, it's just a bad game period

ffxiii and xiii-2 are among the best in the series

I don't know how I missed posting this since I made a whole topic about it, but FFX is a pretty mediocre, boring game. None of the characters are good. The battle system is very overrated, encouraging grinding and heavenly favoring specific party members for specific enemies in every random encounter sucks.

Any RPG where your unfielded party members don't gain exp and skill points is flawed, and in FFX it is a particularly egregious sin since it contradicts the entire goal of the battle system/encounter types.

FFX doesn't encourage grinding at all until the post-game content. In fact, if you want the right amount of challenge, you shouldn't grind at all. You'll reach the end of each character's Sphere Grid around Zanarkand, and then it opens up for post-game, so if anything, it's perfectly structured to be played without grinding.

It does encourage you to use every character in every battle, but it's honestly not that difficult to do.

Now if you want a game that encourages you to break the battle system, that's FFVIII, but that's a positive, not a negative.

Not being difficult and not being an annoying, pointless time waster are two very different things.

Wakka not getting experience because I don't want to swap him in for a pointless pot shot every single fight in an area with no birds is bad game design.

It's a couple of extra turns if it's an easy battle, sure.

But considering you play games with the goal of getting from point A to point B in as straight of a line as possible, any extra steps tend to annoy you.

Instead of trying to be sarcastic about it, how about you explain why having to swap in every character in every battle for no reason just to makes sure they all get AP is a good thing?

There was no sarcasm in that post. You've admitted multiple times that's how you play games.

Being able to freely swap in party members at all times is a fantastic feature. I'd prefer to get free XP for everyone all the time, too, but a couple of extra turns in a battle system that moves as fast as FFX's doesn't bother me the way it does you.

There's a mod on PC that makes every character gain AP regardless of their participation and wow is it an improvement not to have to deal with that tedium. Really surprised they elected not to fix that with the remasters.

I'm not willing to give stuff a pass for wasting my time for no reason, no. It doesn't really matter if it's not very much time. Even in games I love, I consider such things to always be a flaw.

I wouldn't even consider it to be a small amount of time here. In a game with hundreds if not thousands of random encounters, it adds up!

On a similar note, any FF game with truly random battles is a problem. Even the best ones are extremely difficult to go back to because random battle have always been bad.

Would not have made me a fan of the game, but certainly would have helped.

I also recently found out that the HD version of FFX actually has way worse faces and boy that sucks! Some of those comparison shots are damning, the HD version basically got rid of all emotional expressions in the game.

I don't want to use Kimhari at all because Blue Mages suck, but the game isn't going to let me get away with not fielding Kimhari a bunch to get him up to speed.

And yes, I do hate Blue Mages because I consider having to go around and learn all the abilities to be a waste of time (though admittedly it's not so bad because in FFX because of the structure).

I didn't use that goat loser in Chained Echoes even once!

I barely used him on my first playthrough, but the game compensates for it by letting you learn a lot of stuff from Biran and Yenke through Lancet to give you a bunch of instant Overdrives
