I am of the exact opposite opinion. Very annoyed at games moving towards more open environments and was so pleased to get such a polished big budget release that's a guided linear experience, a dying breed of game.

I can mainly look at the recent God of War games as the best examples of major recent releases that were incredible other than being held down by big boring exploration areas. Ragnarok in particular added that enormous optional area towards the end of the game that I skipped and will never go back to do.

Just finished the game and I loved it. Final play time was around 15-16 hours which is around the same time as my OG RE4 initial playthrough.

There's so much to talk about so I'll just give my overall thoughts. I'll put it all in one big spoiler tag.

IMO I think the village and castle were vastly improved over the original with the island being roughly the same.

The quality of life improvements were well needed. The auto-sort function of the inventory made me smile from ear to ear - I spent far too much time in the OG organising my case! The fact that enemy drops don't disappear after a time (as well as marking missed drops on the map) was also a welcome addition.

I loved the fact that they expanded the lake area allowing an element of non-linear exploration.

Regenerators were a scary presence as ever - and I loved that some turned into an Iron Maiden upon death - "You cuddly bastard"

The good points of the game appear to be talked to death in this topic so I'll just point out a few minor flaws I found.

Maybe it's me but I found the initial garridor battle underwhelming. I killed it very quickly without any stealth needed. If you shot him in the OG, he knew exactly where you were and after he recovered he charged at you. That didn't seem to happen in this game, he writhed in pain a bit then forgot where I was.

Ada was flat as everyone has mentioned. I don't tend to pick up on these things, but I noticed it immediately which means the VA/direction must be bad.

There's probably another couple of minor flaws I'm forgetting, but aside from that it is a top tier game which at least matches, if not surpasses the originally. However I have yet to put it to the longevity test yet, so this could change.

Onto the platinum which I'm looking forward to.

Finished the Castle. All the bits that were remade or reimagined from the original were brilliant bar the water room which was a bit of a disappointment. The only new bit i wasn't a fan of was probably the gigante fight with the cannon. Didn't like the whole section leading up to it either with the sun/moon doors.

Finished my pistol/knife only playthrough this morning and now on professional ng+ with the infinite rocket launcher going for no healing and finishing with at least an A rank

90 minutes in and already on chapter 9 lolz

Yeah, the REMake itself is 21 years old at this point, so they're more than justified in revisiting it. Considering the recent successes (with 2 and 4 anyway), I'd love to see what they can do with a reimagined Spencer Mansion, which is essentially hollowed ground to RE fans.

Either that or CV sound so much more enticing to me than a remake of 5... do many fans honestly want that?

God, the magic pixel Sun/Moon Lever skip doesn't save a ton of time but it does save a bunch of annoyance. And you REALLY gotta be patient in this section on Professional once the bombardments start.

Honestly I'd say that's been my only real problem with this difficulty so far: all the setpiece stuff if just more annoying, not more thrilling. And I liked all of these on normal other than the lake fight.

27 hours in and nearing the end. I'm sure a good chunk of that was in the target practice, but told you I play slowly! Krauser fight was incredible. I hope the Saddler fight is good now. Always felt like a weak final boss in a game with so many fantastic bosses.

Beat the game a few days ago. Standard difficulty. I only played through the original once, 15+ years ago, so my memory of the original is pretty hazy.

I loved this game, but the nature of remakes and the fact that I'm that much older means that this was never going to hit quite the same as the original. Still, I had a great time throughout, and I think I enjoyed the island more in this game than the original, which is nice.

Difficulty was interesting-- I think the village was harder on standard than the original, but the castle onward felt easier.

Kind of an interesting choice to leave out some iconically cheesy lines but tease us with them in the achievement names.

Did anyone else notice the weird lighting/color correction changes when moving through doors in some areas. Most commonly from transitioning from inside or outside, there would be a sudden color change that was really noticeable. I saw it happening on someone's stream as well, so it seems like it wasn't just me.

Also I had HDR enabled at the beginning and things were just...way too dark. That might be on me though and maybe I need to better configure my monitor.

The pistol is better than the starting pistol, but still no red9

The shotgun isn't very good, buts it's small so it's nice to have if you're short on space

Oh yeah update

Finished professional infinite rocket launcher no healing speedrun in 3:30

Both Krauser fights were a real challenge. I never avoided damage completely and just had to settle for the wins I had where I took 1-2 hits

Now working on a new game Hardcore S+ run

on my current play though Ive had a weird glitch that makes any shalllow water fully transparent instead of murky, sometimes to the point where it looks like Im walking on nothing because theres no visible ground under the water

which rules, because it let me see alll the dang snakes swimming around that fishing village

but still weird issue

I'm hoping to get this finished today or tomorrow. I'll probably attempt Standard S+ with no heals pistol/knife only. Would throw in no merchant but i dunno if the starter pistol will be good enough to speedrun all the bosses in a fast time.

I am quitting my Profesional run for now on the minecart section.

It's really a shame how much the setpiece sections ruin this difficulty, because the actual minute to minute Prof gameplay is great. It would be on thing if there was a save point during the midpoint break, but alas.

I remember some (admittedly mild) criticism when Capcom allowed RE2 owners to buy all the bonus weapons (including the infinite rocket launcher and mini-gun) for $4.99.

Well at this rate, the fucking Handcannon is gonna be like $15.

that would make the S+ runs so much easier because you can just upgrade the chicago typewriter right away to have infinite ammo instead of having to do all merchant requests in the village to be able to afford one by the time you hit the castle
