Phantom Pain.

Excellent gameplay but half-assed unfinished story.

Still a great game but could have been one of the best ever if it had storytelling anywhere close to 1-4.

Otherwise, 3. Then Peace Walker. Big Boss is a stamp of mediocrity.

Easily 4. It was a bad game given a huge amount if slack for seemingly wrapping up the story which it didnt really.

V is great! Yes it was unfinished but so are a lot of games. The open world is still one of the best ever and set the stage for the GOAT open worlds of BotW and RDR2. The stealth mechanics are so good too. Even the story gets more slack than it deserves. Missions seem to have gotten rearranged leading to odd pacing though again thats common in games. The reality is it wasnt that unfinished. If they had made the bonus content that shipped with the limited edition free DLC the hanging elements of the story are all wrapped up. Its not like there was a third of the game missing like Halo 2 for instance. If you have not played it you absolutely should.

3>1>V>2>4.

My meme answer is launch mgs3 (aka not subsistence) because the camera, controls, and first aid systems were terrible, and I'm not that big on naked snake's characterization

I actually have to hand it to mgs4, even though I was very appreciative of it tying everything up and it has a ton of memorable moments. It was just unpleasant to slog through

V is hard to compare to the rest, probably uas the clearest flaws and could have been the best game ever with proper treatment. I'm only certain that 3 is not the 'worst'.

it has some bad chapters, the beauty and the beast unit is kind of lame, and the nostalgia/fan service only goes so far. the final fight is the best thing in the entire series though

1 > 3 >= 2 >> V

Never played 4. MGS1 remains the best despite recent years piling on it for outdated gameplay mechanics -- it's still the most tightly-built game and the only one I can stand to follow the cinematics for anymore. Longer cutscenes we're the thing that became outdated for me in this series more than anything.

Fantastic trilogy. V was okay but I didn't play much.

It's obvious why people would pick V but I can't agree in the slightest. The story was a mess but it cannot be understated how high quality the gameplay was. I would go as far as to say the MGSV is mechanically the best gameplay experience ever in a video game for me.

I also get 4, the movie, being in the opposite end of the story spectrum. However, that also has such an absurd amount of charm and is an unforgettable experience. I adore its bullshit.

Obviously 3 is just good on all fronts.

And MGS1 is a much more compact, solid, frankly revolutionary experience.

I have to pick MGS2 just via process of elimination, but MGS2 is an EXCELLENT game.

There are only 4 main MGS. The lettered ones are PW, GZ, V which could arguably be mainline, or their own separate series.

So out of the 4, probably 4 even though I still love it. The structure was too disjointed.

This is what I meant when I said that it's got great mechanics but awful game design. Like, Ground Zeroes absolutely stomps Phantom Pain when it comes to mission variety, which is a serious problem when it was only supposed to whet our appetites. Like "oh man, if what's essentially a demo has this much variety in its content, imagine how awesome Phantom Pain will be!" Only to realize the "full" game is significantly more boring.

When people say V has great gameplay they mean it has great controls, but bad gameplay. Which is a terrible reason to say a game is good. It's like saying the Breville Smart Oven Pro is the best Metal Gear because the knobs have a great click when you turn them.

This is misleading imo, Ground Zeroes has what like 7 missions that are all different. Phantom Pain has way more than than 7 different types of missions, but there's a lot of more of each of them. The latter has way more variety unless you insist on doing everything, which you don't have to.

I don't hate open world games but they often become a drag for me and I take a longer break. This was never the case with MGSV which I loved every part of as I spent +200 hours doing everything.

There's so much variety to how you approach things I don't really see how the game could have gotten THAT repetitive for people.

I mean, it certainly did for me because I got the plat and it extended the game by 50 hours it didn't need, but for at least 80 of those hours I never really got tired of it. I did turn off that dumb exclamation mark thing though.
