I've only played 1-3.
3 was my least fav of those.

I think it's 4 pretty easily, I do really love the story for what it is, but it's such a weird disjointed experience with crazy highs and terrible lows. People are comparing it to 2 in terms of gameplay/cutscene balance, but I feel that MGS2 stays pretty consistent in what it's trying to do throughout, which makes a huge difference. The same goes for V, on the opposite end of the spectrum.

4 is an eclectic disaster mess of a game, and to be clear that is why I love it, but it's also why it's my least favorite.

Because there was no reason to do the variety. It was so easy to mass tranq and fulton entire bases. Every guard was effectively the same, you just threw them into your base and forgot about them. There was no real reason to build up your base either, since most of the game was doable with the basic tools. It just gave you tools to grab even more people, so you could research even more tools.

You can definitely see what they were going for, trying to make the guards more memorable and significant, to the point you would even want to play as them. But it didn't really work. Except for a couple late game missions where you could see a bit of their vision, which honestly made it more sad, knowing what potential was missed.

Hilariously enough even Peace Walker does this better since you can eventually train soldiers who are far superior to Big Boss in the field. Doesn't really make a ton of sense storywise but it definitely justified the system a lot better.

And yeah the moment-to-moment variety of Phantom Pain completely fell apart as soon as I got a silenced tranq rifle. You can say that's on the player for optimizing the fun out of it but they don't even try to give you a reason to do anything beyond that one absurdly overpowered method.

Yeah, if you're playing to win instead of for fun, there's no point in exploring all the random things you can do

You experiment a lot at first when you're trying to figure things out, but once you figure out your optimal strategy, you tend to stick with it.

Oh, there are plenty of people on B8 who dislike 3. It just has enough people who love it to drown them out most of the time.
