We will be refunding all Stadia hardware purchases made through the Google Store, and all game and add-on content purchases made through the Stadia store.

At least they're doing that.

I see people saying "oh it amazing they're refunding everything", and like...

A) Google has more money than God.

B) Refunding literally every purchase from a product that's hardware and software both tanked won't be a lot in the grand scheme of things, especially compared to the publicity of not doing so.

This is a little sad, because I want some kind of game streaming platform(s) to succeed. I still think there's a lot of potential for games uniquely designed to be run not on your local machine

I wonder how well Amazon Luna is doing

I don't know the Luna specifics, but I know it's a cheap barrier of entry and you can't even begin to compare the difference between Amazon's marketing and Googles.

You know, this is kind of a shame. I got Cyberpunk on there A) because it worked unlike most other ways to play that game at launch B) because it came with a controller and Chromecast Ultra for free and C) it was already cheaper than elsewhere. Honestly, I had a great time with it using my month of the premium service, I played a lot of games, it worked well, and the controller is great. I got a lot of use out that in particular even when I stopped using Stadia itself. They got that service to a good place in terms of tech and actual experience. Its just a shame they tanked themselves through wanton mismanagement and Google never committing to anything.

Yeah, that's... bad. A sign of how colossal a failure this was.

I think part of it was the marketing. There weren't enough ads explaining how this was new and different. The name "Stadia" sounds too sporty, since it's the plural of "stadium." And I think part of it is that people weren't ready for it. I like the idea, but it needs more development before it can work effectively. I feel that consoles are a necessity because those localize the GPUs - I don't know how long it will take for a remote graphics streamer to actively work.

The Google could've committed more to advertising and showcasing the advancements and how it works so people were less apprehensive.

i think it already does work if you are lucky- i.e., a PC player hooked up to an ethernet cable living in an area with strong internet reasonably close to the service's data centers. for slower paced or even turn-based games it works just fine for other users, too

gaming pcs/consoles are still equal or better 97% of the time, because all of the streamed games are just normal PC/console games, but streamed. the only current use case is someone who somehow has great internet but a mediocre gaming setup

longer term, i'd love to see large-scale multiplayer games that could never reasonably run on a consumer machine, but can run on a server and stream to a hundred+ players simultaneously

i'll admit it's a solution in search of a problem. and i don't think there's a way for a company to realistically make that financial leap successfully, but it's fun to think about

The refunds are because you'll no longer have access to any purchased games. It's to avoid a lawsuit.

I am curious how end of life works out legally. Like Stadia wasn't very successful so it's feasible to issue refunds and just not deal with it. But, what if it did catch on? Say end of life was 10 or 20 years for now instead. The servers would still be shutting down and all purchased games would become unplayable. It would be the same problem today but on a much larger scale. I guess that's also another reason Stadia's model was bad.

Successful enough to go on for a few years but not so successful it goes on forever. It's just a constructed time frame to make the scenario work.

I would guess that the theoretical model was to actually go on forever and have full BC if they ever felt a need to make successors. Like even if they stopped selling "Stadia 1" games altogether they would still be playable in that event.

My entire knowledge of Stadia was periodically seeing commercials for it pop up on YouTube that just went "Sta-dee-uh!" and ended after 5 seconds.

Didn't know anyone personally who had a Stadia, but I did lookup a game I played in PUBG in a four-man group where I killed two human players teamed up (most of the game is bots now). Those two were playing on Stadia.

I guess they couldn't find another two Stadia players to finish their group, as I never saw another player on Stadia via the lookup tool ever again.

Yeah, and that's a very small percentage of the population. I would not be able to stream such a thing without serious lag, given my 30 mbps connection. It's sufficient for what I need it for - they upgraded from 20 mbps when the COVID hit - but that only includes streaming video, not interactive games.

Back to my point: That's just a word. Their advertising left a lot to be desired, because nobody recognized how new and different it was since The Google didn't explain.

Apparently, even employees at The Google were #blindsided by this move. No warning. They found out just before the news went public.

Needless to say, this is not a good look for the company, and never again will it be a player on any level in the video game industry. Nobody will want to work for The Google and nobody will develop games for any platform they may put out.

You say that now, but we'll see how Warner Bros Discovery looks in a year, and I bet we'll get a good lens into the future.

I thought the whole point is (sorry, was) that there's no 'system', just a controller (which I'd assume will work as a wireless PC controller) and a Chromecast (which I'd assume still works as a Chromecast).

So, there's not really a console/system for it, other than the controller itself. Alright, that clears it up. Thanks for the explanation BlackMageJawa.

Anyone know if the Stadia controllers are any good? Looks like they're being sold off dirt cheap, so assuming they still work with Windows, I might pick one up for the novelty.

You can still use them as a wired controller. But, a firmware update is needed to use them wirelessly for non-Stadia purposes.
