The day Roe vs Wade got overturned I saw a couple dudes in red shirts and MAGA hats holding religious signs on the side of the street and just laughed. Id be fine with the sane people who want to leave being able to. Everything already sucks anyways so whats a few more billions or trillions of dollars to relocate everyone in the country who doesnt want to relive the days of only white men having rights. Oh it's far more sinister than that. I don't know if anyone's read the right-wing fantasy book Victoria: A Novel of Fourth Generation Warfare. Where they basically just kill everyone who disagrees with them, and sell the women who don't obey them into sexual slavery to the (of course) Muslims. See, this part is where the whole "let Texas secede" thing falls apart for me. I have no idea why anyone thinks an independent Texas would collapse quickly. Yes, this is team sports. You are describing an absolute fantasy world, as if everyone in a red state is an irredeemable monster, or that you don't have fascists in whatever blue state you live in. People have brought this up in the topic multiple times. You want to also evacuate 14 million Texan refugees? Yeah sounds reasonable, and wouldn't even solve the problem. Do I have to explain the Great Migration and how it did not magically end oppression? The reason people don't leave red states isn't because they are "insane" or "stupid" it's because they either don't have the means or ability, or they have ties to local communities and their quality of life would get worse if they left, since things are bad everywhere. Thinking about this in terms of electoral politics misses how real people are affected by it.

Secession is a meme and one you fundamentally miss the point of. Texas has a trifecta government, if they wanted to leave they could try. Mostly it is a slogan to rile up the base, or a bluff against the federal government. You saw it more during Obama's presidency, and then surprise surprise it mostly went away during Trump for other slogans. Now Biden's back so of course. It is a mostly empty signifier of rebellion against the liberal order, and the thing about that is, you can obviate the need to secede by taking over the country. That is the actual goal.

So yeah I know people are just venting or whatever but this is a completely unhelpful mindset even as a joke, and you should get it out of your head. It is just some stupid "us versus them" mentality when what needs to be happening is resources going into red states to help the people and organizations who are there.

As for Lemon, in case you're unfamiliar with it - it was the test the Court established in 1971 (SCOTUS really coming at precedent from the 70s i guess) to determine if legislation violated the separation of church in state. It was a three part test as follows:

1. Statute must have a secular legislative purpose.
2. The principal or primary effect of the statute must neither advance nor inhibit religion.
3. The statute must not result in "excessive government entanglement" with religion.

In its place, the conservatives on the Court have replaced it with...

"In place of Lemon and the endorsement test, this Court has instructed that the Establishment Clause must be interpreted by 'reference to historical practices and understandings.' [...] "'[T]he line' that courts and governments 'must draw between the permissible and the impermissible' has to 'accor[d] with history and faithfully reflec[t] the understanding of the Founding Fathers.'"

The only sliver of silver lining here is that all these aCtiViSt JuDgeS have now shown there is precedent to say "fuck precedent" so if the democrats ever regain control of the supreme court (lol) they can just do the same thing and reverse things immediately again for all the bad decisions over the past 15 years. Although I have no confidence that'll happen.

Sorry, I wasn't even trying to relitigate for the millionth and one time. Hillary still won handily except for in three states she needed to. And even if Hillary won that election, we would still basically be waiting for one bad turn of luck where Republicans got the chance to do what they did anyway.

I feel like if Trump won the 2016 election and Hillary Clinton didn't run then but she ran against him in 2020 she might have won. The problem is you have to make so many assumptions in such a case.

It also occurred to me that most women in America, or at least white women anyway, probably would never get themselves into situations where they'd seek an abortion because they live happily with their husbands and don't feel any obligation to earn money so fewer opportunities to get sexually harassed. Explains why the Supreme Court is so out of touch anyway that they wouldn't think through a million nightmare scenarios resulting from their repealed law.
