A lot of people are going to be very unhappy. Including myself. I hate the look of underscores and I appreciate every pre-2004 user who has been active enough to deny changing their name every other time the site offered it.

Due to the merging of three completely different systems over the last twenty-five years (contributors, message boards, and the universal login system), users could have up to three different usernames, each with different rules and standards for how those names could be constructed. However, in the next few months, GameFAQs will be moving to a brand new authentication provider, and in the process of this change we'll be reducing the number of user names associated with an account to one. You are one of the last 4,837 users who have more than one account name, and we'd like to make this transition as smooth as possible.

Unless you were asking why they can't just code better and let us keep the spaces, in which case I have no clue.

It's probably necessary because Bacon is the web dev and clearly is not actually someone with any training or proficiency in the field given the changes this site has gone through over the years.

If you know what you're doing it would be easy to allow spaces to display even if you needed to standardize your storage or whatever.

But yeah. Oh well.

I bet the spaces wouldn't have caused so many lingering issues if they didn't unsupport them in the first place!

No, it literally is. It means some of the systems haven't been coded to be able to handle spaces, so instead of just Space Name Here, you also have Space_Name_Here in the other system/s. Thus, you technically have two usernames.

Now, why that even came to exist as an issue, who knows. Spaces shouldn't be difficult to code around. Inconvenient? Sure, but not difficult. My guess is there's a bunch of legacy code being dealt with.

No, the problem really is with having multiple usernames. Spaces is the most common problem. But, if one has an old 20 character message board account name and a 15 character site account name, they still need to submit a single username to use going forward.

And to be clear what I mean by "legacy" code, it usually means code that hasn't been updated in awhile, or has been written by somebody else entirely that is no longer there, and thus isn't entirely easy to even understand, let alone change/update. Could also mean code that there just isn't enough value in taking the time to update, plain and simple, and thus it's left to run as is.

Like this account has a message board name of "BlameTheVoteStuffers" and a site name of "VoterStuffers". There are no spaces in either one but I still need to change it to a single unified name.

At least they're letting you keep the long name this time...

I got this notification too. Not because of spaces, but because my contributor name is different from my message board name. The reason for that is a long time ago when gamefaqs switched to the universal ID, someone stole my user name of "Fiop" as a universal ID so I had to pick something else, but the message board name remained "Fiop". Later on, the account that took the universal ID purged, so I could get "Fiop" as the universal ID, but for whatever reason my contributor name never updated, even though I tried to get this fixed. It's nice that should hopefully finally be fixed now.

Likely because certain systems simply aren't coded to handle spaces at all , and it's probably more cost efficient to just do away with spaces than it is to update said code. Gamefaqs.com probably isn't something high up on the cost priority list.

Hey, I just realized something. For years the reason that they denied raising the character limit back up to 20 was because it caused issues with the universal system. This went so far as to create the issue of 16-20 character names having to pick a different login name, resulting in the current situation. If they're allowing users to pick longer names now, doesn't that officially confirm that the length issues are entirely cleared up in the backend and they hypothetically could be supported? Of course now they won't change it for new registrations because it was offered as a "perk" to legacy users and it would be "unfair" to take away their exclusive feature.

I also got the message because apparently my account has 2 usernames and I have to select one. The default is the one I don't want so guess I'll have to use my name change. I had been sitting on it if I ever wanted to use it but now I guess I have to.

It really should be a trivial fix no matter what the config is but whatever. No one who cares has any idea of what they're doing and they're not going to pay someone who does.

It already happened with mine. Admittedly, it's been a long time since I used this account.

Although spaces in names will no longer be allowed (as these have caused a myriad of issues for years), we are extending the possible length of a user name to 20 characters indefinitely for legacy users. I remember being offered to merge my user names like 12 years ago and merging them as Anagram. Sorry that this is still an issue.

I once inherited a system where users had figured out how to get the and symbols into their usernames. The < and > symbols, too

You had users with the actual username <h1>joe's emporium & repairs<\h1> because they wanted their name to look bigger

It was wreaking havoc with logging in on different browsers, and was overall a good time. Apostrophes were the actual worst because every browser wanted to auto correct it to a different character

We eventually split out the login names from the display names and all was well for a time
