Honestly, coding this message with the different suggestions sounds harder than adding support for spaces in username. Nothing is ever as easy as it seems though.

It seems like spaces haven't been allowed for a long time? Most likely they have some system that only allows alphanumeric, _, - and that's it. So you can't just encode spaces as a special char or %20 or something, and convert it in the HTML. You could do some trick like "____Aasjd23j1d1j2d___" represents a space, but that's kinda ridiculous. I would personally go for that anyway, or try harder to find another workaround to let people keep their 20+ year old usernames, but it's easy to see how they decided it wasn't worth it.

Alternatively, add a "message board display name" field that can be edited by the user. Limit it to once every 1000 karma or something.

I think the mention system is also kinda busted due to multiple usernames. Let me try this:

You can also check to see if a profile page exists for the user by editing the username at the end of the link.

If they exist, they looks like this:

If they don't, you get this:
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/community/NotAnAccountName

This can also tell you if the account is inactive or banned so you have a chance to take the name.

Does anyone know if this uses up your one time name change if you still had it available? Reading the wording it sounds like it would (if I let it go to the default name, it will default to my actual real name which I don't want rather than staying at what I have now)

I submitted the inactive account name in the new name field. I also put down a note saying it was an inactive account and wrote down an alternate name if it wasn't available.

I think we all already had alternative names for contributions or whatever so we'd just be converted over to those

If you don't submit a name then they will default you to one of your current names (which in most people's cases is probably their "site name" i.e. login name).

You get a default choice when the deadline hits but you can still change it again after the deadline.
