Part of what made the horror of Midsommar more potent, was how irredeemable the protagonist became by the end of it. You aren't supposed to be happy.

Impressive analysis, but I don't have to say nothin. I made sure to never reference other movies on the list in any of my write-ups. Guess we'll see tomorrow.

Regardless of what wins, I do like that no one person was able to single-handedly decide the winner of this due to the 30 point margin! That makes whichever one a fitting winner for the board.

I predict I will nail the number 2 and I guess be one of the lower votes on our overall 1 at 9.

Which I'm okay with. But at this point let's go <redacted> for winner!

If that works for you, sure. I personally don't enjoy films like this, so the writer can claim that was "intended" all they'd like but it doesn't make me have a fond take on the movie.

That how most tragedies work though. You have a protagonist who succumbs to their flaw again and again until they make one final choice that gets them or everyone around them killed.

2. Train to Busan (130 points)

Why I Chose It: With Korean culture getting so big in the 2010s, I wouldve been remiss to not include one of the biggest horror successes from the country this decade - Train to Busan. Breaking box office records and spawning a franchise consisting of a stand-alone sequel and animated prequel, Train to Busan had crossover success in the States thanks to its Walking Dead-esque human drama mixed with crazy fast-paced action for a zombie film that felt very much in its own ballpark.

Inviso - Going into this rewatch, Id actually watched Train to Busan on a whim during the pandemic at some point, and I loved it. Rewatching it just confirmed that its an amazing movie, and probably one of my favorite horror movies overall. It just manages to do SO MUCH right with a plot that could easily have been standard schlock. There have been, in the past and on this list, foreign films where I feel complete at odds with the tone that the directors are going for, as an American viewer. But with Train to Busan, I almost feel like the foreign direction, mixed with an American style narrative, almost makes it better, because they treat the viewers with more intelligence than American directors do. At least when it comes to action horror zombie movies and the like, is what I mean.

The movie does a great job of setting up its characters through show-not-tell scenes. Theres a little telling and editorializing, but that, in and of itself, is an example of showing the character whos doing the editorializing. We first meet Seok-woo as hes doing hedge fund business and is so wrapped up that he needs an assistant to give him an idea of what his daughter might like as a birthday gift. He gets her a Wii, but he doesnt realize that hed already bought her one as a prior gift. Its interesting, because the writers could easily have made him a total clich, forgetting his daughters birthday and leading to her insistence on traveling to see her mother. Instead, Seok-woo isnt the best guy around by any means, but hes also shown as making somewhat of an effort. He hasnt completely become a soulless monster yet, allowing for him to still be able to achieve redemption by the end of the film.

Meanwhile, we get all of our other characters. Sang-hwa is a little gruff when Yu-an tries to go into the bathroom his wife occupies, but he shows a tender side by offering an alternative option. Seong-kyeong is a bit feisty, even though Sang-hwa spends the movie doing everything he can to keep her safe. Jin-hee is head over heels for Yong-guk, and shes confident in this care, while Yong-guk is shier and more reserved and embarrassed, even though obviously he cares for her as well. In-gil is depicted as helpful to others, while her sister Jong-gil views this as annoying and a sign of weakness. The unnamed homeless man is found cowering in a bathroom, almost as a survival mechanism on his part, which allows Yon-sok to demonstrate his personality as an uncaring asshole by looking down on the man to Yu-an. And even unnamed conductor is painted as highly professional as his job. In the opening minutes of the trains movement, were introduced to all of these characters, and we get to know who they are in a nutshell, so they can either grow and change, or that personality will define how they treat the rest of the film.

Then we get the first real attack, and this is where the zombies come across the most threatening. This isnt like an American horror movie, where everything is gore to ramp up the tension. No, the attacks and bites feel realistic, which almost makes the swarming horde of zombies all the more terrifying. These are fast zombies in an enclosed setting for the majority of the film, and to make matters more difficult for the survivors, theres no miracle gun they can use to score headshot after headshot. In that initial attack, we see more characterization and Sang-hwa is shown to be nominally the hero of the film, while Seok-woo is cowardly and driven to protect himself (and his daughter) at all costs.

I just really like Seok-woos arc in the movie. When the train stops, he breaks off from the rest of the survivors, seeking to leave them to their fate in quarantine (much to Yu-ans dismay), but multiple people help save his life when the station is overwhelmed, and suddenly he needs to rely on others, rather than just looking for himself. Its an interesting contrast, because you have Yon-sok as the self-centered businessman, who ends up as the villain of the film (outside of the zombies, of course), and Sang-hwa as the heroand the further Seok-woo distances himself from Yon-sok, the more he becomes heroic and self-sacrificing alongside Sang-hwa. Its not a shoulder angel/devil situation, but it says a lot when Sang-hwa ends up sacrificing himself to save the rest of the group, and Seok-woos first action after that is to punch Yon-sok for leaving them all to die.
Reverting back to technical discussion, I love the feel of the zombies in this movie. The swarms are great, but the fact that you get these tidal waves of bodies raining down on the survivors really amps up their threat level, both in the station, and in the close quarters of the train cars. Having that weakness to darkness makes for interesting situations, where the trio of warriors (Seok-woo, Sang-hwa, and Yong-guk) start out fighting through a crowd, then realize they can sneak past with the right timing. Its just nice to see a variety of methods utilized, especially since these zombies are hard to take down for good.

I should also point out that I love the way the station sequence splits up the survivors. Were introduced to a lot of pairs (Seok-woo/Yu-an, Sang-hwa/Seong-kyeong, In-gil/Jong-gil, Jin-hee/Yong-guk), and all of them get divided into three different groupings, so no one really knows if their loved one is safe as the train departs from the station. The trio of men decide to fight their way forward, the weaker quartet hides helplessly in a bathroom, and a few survivors try to convince the larger group to allow their loved ones into safety, thus leading to the kind of utilitarian group mentality that leads to human beings turning against one another. Needless to say, when the cowardly survivors stupidly cordon off our heroes FURTHER from the horde they JUST escaped, it brought me such joy to see Jong-gil torpedo everyone.

Then we get to the ending. Yon-sok maintains his status as a self-serving asshole, getting THREE characters specifically killed by throwing them to the horde, all so he could get infected himself, and bite Seok-woo. Jin-hee is one of those victims, leading to a romantically-tragic scene where she dies in Yong-guks arms. The homeless man, who has been largely characterized as cowardly all movie, winds up sacrificing himself to save Yu-an and Seong-kyeong. And ultimately, Seok-woo dies, protecting not just Yu-an, but rather Seong-kyeong, as he promised Sang-hwa. It teared up, because by the time the end of the movie rolled around, Seok-woo had proven himself brave and strong, and willing to fight for more than just himself. He died by casting off that asshole persona he started the movie with, and its bittersweet that he had to die to achieve that.

Ultimately, I just think the movie did a lot right technically in filming and creating the zombies, and I think they nailed the characterization (which is really what a zombie movie SHOULD focus on, since theres only so much mileage you can get out of a mindless killing machine). This was just a really great watch overall, and I hope its done well on this list.

Red13n - Didn't expect my favorite movie on this list to be one that was freely available. But there is a lot packed into this movie, you have fairly threatening zombies, you got some built up heroes that get to be cool, sometimes clever. You get to see the impact of a world falling to a zombie apocalypse on both a personal and macro level. You get to see humanity act completely irrational and mob mentality prevail. This at times could feel like a fun movie mixed with an almost perfect intensity that yeah, pretty much everyone is in peril but you really want to root for your heroes. You even have some decent ground rules setup for the zombies with sight that is played up real well, and I'm very much a sucker for monsters having well-established rules. All with a bit of redemption arc hanging over our heads.

FFDragon - Zombie media got run into the fucking ground since 2000, but I will still consume all of it just like a zombie myself. This is easily one of the best made in a long time.

PrinceKaro - You know what is worse then snakes on a plane? Zombies on a train! So what happens is that during your standard zombie outbreak, the Seoul-Busan express train unwittingly takes on a passenger of the mortally challenged variety, and everyone has a bad time.

Even though zombies are way overdone it still makes it seem fresh somehow, and it shows that just because you are doing something that is done a lot, doesnt necessarily mean you have to make it bad. The zombie movements in particular are very impressive, they are so wrong yet so so right.

But the heart of this film is the strength of its characters, actually caring about whether someone's brain gets eaten or not makes a big difference from the typical horror monster fodder. It may just be the best serious zombie movie ever made.

Jcgamer107 - Just your standard action horror movie that will make you cry. The best of the 8 movies on the list that I hadnt seen before.

Plasmabeam - Cant remember the last time a horror movie got me choked up. Train to Busan is a masterpiece thats basically a cross between Snowpiercer and Telltales The Walking Dead. The emotion is strong because the characters are relatable, well-realized, and worth rooting for. I loved how clever they were when solving problems and how self-sacrificing they became in the movies most dire moments.

Easily one of the best on this list. Thanks for turning me onto this one, Snake.

Fortybelowsummer - Some might consider this heresy, but I kind of prefer fast zombies to slow ones. I love a good slow, classic zombie but theres something scarier about one that will just come running at your ass. The zombies here turn almost instantly after being bitten, contorting into twisted, terrifying creatures, and of course being trapped on a train with them adds to the tension. And as is usually the case, the actions of the living pose as much of a threat as the walking (running) dead. Very, very good example of the genre and a must see.

Snake - Once in a while, a piece of media comes along to revitalize a particular genre and restore your faith in it. Train to Busan is that for zombies. TtB is at least top 5 of the best zombie movies ever made. I dont know how it manages to feel so original - on paper the characters fit their specific archetypes, fast-zombies have been done before, even piles of them have been done in World War Z. Yet, everything here feels turned up to 11 - to make a pun - like everythings about to go off the rails at any moment (and it eventually does!) Busan is an expert masterclass on how to cut to the chase - people are here for zombie carnage and the film knows it. Theres a bit of a prologue setting up our main protagonist and his daughter, which is quick and to the point - dads busy and doesnt have time for family. I love the feeling of being just on the cusp of chaos - fires in the distance, emergency vehicles speeding through the streets, internet news reports in the office. The rest of the main cast is introduced on the train - a man and his pregnant wife, a high school baseball team, a pair of elderly sisters, a homeless man. Theyre introduced like strangers you would bump into on an actual train - you get their baseline traits and the trip gets underway. Again the cusp of chaos - the zombies start attacking just before the train takes off and no one notices, besides Seok-woos daughter. I love this so much - commenting on the obliviousness of a crowd and giving us a glimpse into the horrors to come. But one zombie does make it on the train - and from there that kernel of mayhem explodes into a full-blown thrill ride that never lets up. The former strangers of the train become entangled in a nightmare, clashing, teaming-up, and of course, zombifying by the dozens. These are some of the most aggressive zombies Ive ever seen in a film, real animal-like and vicious. Its hard for zombies to still be scary after so many years, but Busan comes the closest to achieving it in a long time. They crash through windows and pour out like liquid, moving like quicksilver after their victims. One magic trick of the film is enhancing the characters through their ordeals; the harrowing affairs of the apocalypse bring out both the characters best and most heroic traits, and, of course, it wouldnt be a zombie movie without the worst ones. At its core, its really just a fantastic, straight-forward zombie thrill ride, with a claustrophobic, speeding setting amping up anxieties and fears you can feel bleed through the screen. Basically - everything a great zombie movie should be.

Thesmark - A zombie movie on a train is a great idea, its a confined space with lots of people and they cant just escape. I love the contorting movements of the zombies, the idea that they become passive when they cant see is a fun and unique touch, the action is solid and the makeup is good. The themes and characters are pretty much standard zombie movie fare (I will say, the buff dude rules), but its solidly executed. Im a little more mixed on the emotional throughline between the father and daughter (I would imagine that where you lie on it is the difference between people who love the movie and people who just really like it), but overall its one of the better movies on this list.

Johnbobb - There's a lot of little pieces that had to come together to really make this film work as well as it does. The first being Shim Eun-kyung (credited only as "runaway girl"), the first person we see infected, whose brief but captivating performance sells the body horror of the infection as it's just beginning to manifest. Even more credit goes to the sound mixing team, because the noises of the cracking bodies overtop of the score was really what drives in the terror. So much makes this film stand out in an already overcrowded subgenre. I will say the one weak point comes near the end, when the "self-concerned businessman" character kinda goes full cartoon villain and single-handedly kills off most of the rest of the characters one-by-one. It just doesn't feel cohesive with the film up to that point. But that's largely nitpicking at an otherwise excellent thriller.

Lightning Strikes - All are dead!

Train to Busan is a terrific piece of zombie fiction that works both as a unique take on some very tired tropes and as an exciting action thriller. At its heart though there is a great story of bonding between father and daughter cut across by some rather interesting social commentary about work culture, individualism, and how they isolate us from our family members. You really feel for these characters, and want to see them make it through which is of course a good sign for any horror film. And for the cast at large, the film plays a good trick of keeping a very low body count for the bulk of the film and then carving through them in a short period of time. It leaves you shocked in a way you never expected from the rest of the film.

On the whole this is a brilliantly fast paced thriller that feels so much bigger than its budget lets on. Everything seems huge, it really seems like a blockbuster but was actually done on a micro-budget. That is still amazing to me even in the years since I first saw it. The whole film just oozes a creativity and a style that means that even a subject matter as tired as zombies can be made cool and fun again. I would recommend this film to anybody even if youre suffering from massive zombie fatigue.
A well-made thriller all around.

Biggest scare: While you can see it coming, the zombie horde at the train station makes for a nerve-wracking sequence.

rockus - Train to Busan is a testament to putting a lot of solid pieces together and pulling off a competent production. Its a pretty straight forward film but it has a novel concept, just enough emotional leverage to invest in, and a strong cast playing their types well. The stand out being Ma Dong-seok burly arming his way through the hordes from train car to train car. Hope his career continues to take off and even though I dont care much for Eternals I hope he got *paid*. He rules in Kundo and The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil as well. Back to Train to Busan, overall its just a really solid horror thriller. Really tight and doesnt miss a beat. Even when you can see something coming, like the cowardly guys betrayal, it works because it just feels like its the right thing for the film to do, because the movie knows exactly what its doing. Good stuff, and not surprising that it was such a hit. Shame the sequel is kind of a mess, though even that has some things I like about it.

Suprak - B+
Train to Busan was one of three films on this entire list I hadnt heard anything about. I mean, I feel like maybe some friends told me about it at one point but it was one of those things I had no firm recollection of. So when I started the film and it quickly becomes apparent youre dealing with zombies, my expectations sort of bottomed out. It isnt that I hate zombie movies some of my favorite horror films are zombie movies. But I sort of felt like modern zombie films had gotten into this predictable rut that I just wasnt really interested into diving into again. So I went in expecting very little from Train to Busan, and I wound up being pleasantly surprised in just about every way.

This is just about everything I want from a zombie movie. You have a nice big cast of victims here, and for once I actually liked almost all of the cast. The main character, the daughter, buff dad to be, pregnant lady, baseball team the cast here is all great. Its rare for a zombie movie like this to have a cast that isnt just a bunch of tropes waiting to die, but for the most part this movie pulls it off pretty well. The character dynamics here are a lot of fun, and even the side characters have nice little stories with them. And you have huge hordes of undead monsters, with all the fun that comes with it. The train setting is great for helping build a tough space to navigate through and it is a fun setting for the film. You still get the good zombie chase scenes in, and the movie even gives you some fairly unique, creepy movement for the zombies. Theres something with the weird jagged movements that hits that right spot of creepiness, even if this isnt the scariest movie on the list. This was probably one of the less scary movies on this list, but you do have some creepiness, body horror, and genuine tension. On top of that, its just a lot of fun and there are plenty of the good sort of action scenes youd expect from a top tier zombie film.

This was also one of the most genuinely emotional movies on the list, which is something I didnt expect out of a zombie movie. There were maybe two or three other movies Id put ahead of this one, but Train to Busan really gives them a run for their money in terms of moments. It was the closest I came to crying during a zombie film, for sure. I dont cry during movies because I AM A BIG TOUGH MAN but if I were the kind to cry during movies, I feel like I wouldve multiple times during this film. Like when the main character has to say goodbye to his daughter and shes begging him not to go, or when big burly dad turns around to name his daughter, or when the daughter finally sings that song through her tears as they approach sanctuary. Train to Busan does a good job giving you genuinely well scripted, well written, emotional moments that dont feel cheap or phoned in for the sake of the plot. This was a good horror movie, but beyond that it was just a good movie. There is great stuff here beyond the BLOODTHIRSTY KILLER ZOMBIES and it is rare for a zombie movie to be as moving as this one.

The complaints I have here are relatively minor. I do feel like things get a bit cartoon-y at times, or more cartoon-y than the standards of a bunch of undead monsters trying to eat everyone. The scene where theyre fighting through the train car and big burly dad lifts a zombie to the ceiling and theyre fighting like a scene out of Sucker Punch or something, it almost feels like a scene from a completely different movie. Part of the issue here I think is this is a Korean zombie movie and not an America zombie movie. Violence in American zombie movies is usually solved by pew pew pow pow get them guns, but guns are not inherently tied to Korean culture in the same way. Dont get me wrong for the most part I actually think that makes for the better movie. Its way more tense when not everyone is packing like theyre a member of a Montanan separatist militia. Its just that when the time comes and the characters need to fight instead of run, then the action gets a little bit silly. Punching your way through a train full of zombies is a bit silly, especially in a movie that feels a bit more grounded (or, again, as grounded as you can expect from a movie featuring hordes of the undead).

Other than that, Im also not sure if it quite nails the sociopolitical message it was going for. Clearly there are class overtones throughout the movie, but some of them came off a bit sloppy. There is this sort of parallel going on between the main character and the evil CEO guy as to what he is vs what he might become, and it kind of feels like the sloppiest part of the film. They keep going back to hey is this our fault when Im not sure how it could possibly be. That was really muddled for me, and if they wanted to hone in on greedy businessman at fault for outbreak I feel like they needed to put in a couple more lines explaining exactly what the hell they were talking about. And then the CEO villain felt maybe just a bit too over the top for me. He's basically one step away from Snidley Whiplash, and the only thing he didnt do in this movie was give the pregnant woman drugs to induce early labor so he had a baby to chuck at the zombies. He was really despicable, and the actor did a great job making him hateable. Hes certainly near the top of non monster villains on this list for me so it isnt like Im totally down on him. But they maybe couldve been a bit more subtle with the characterization of him specifically, and he comes off as a bit heavy handed for the clear upper vs lower class distinction they have going on.

Every other complaint I have is barely worth mentioning. Maybe it couldve been a bit scarier. Maybe zombies have been done a bit too much. Maybe I shouldve watched subs instead of dubs because the English actors werent carrying things with the same emotional weight the Korean actors had on screen. But, again, those are incredibly minor grievances. Bottom line is this is one of my favorite zombie movies Ive seen now. It might be my greatest surprise on this list, because I almost rolled my eyes when I saw it was a zombie movie and I almost went out and bought the sequel immediately instead of continuing this list after I finished it. Theres a surprising emotional core here, and the main character has one of the best, most complete character arcs of any character on this entire list. Train to Busan stands out as fun and poignant and emotional and well written and basically everything youd want from a good zombie movie. When I found myself feeling tired of zombie movies, maybe I was just tired of American zombie movies because this offers something different in a genre that felt like it had exhausted itself years ago.

BetrayedTangy - I think I can safely say that most people are pretty tired of zombies at this point. The fact that Warm Bodies even exists is a good indication that these monsters should take a vacation. Thankfully Train to Busan came in and breathed some fresh uhhhh decayed air into the lungs of the genre. I think what makes it feel so unique is the lower stakes of the movie. Its not this world ending affair, its just a father trying to bring his daughter to safety. The other characters are also surprisingly well realized, they all have their own priorities and act accordingly upon them. On the other side of things we have the zombies which are fucking terrifying! I think this is the only time Ive preferred the fast variations, the insane speed combined with their erratic movements make for some tense moments. I also think having most of the movie take place on the train was a good call, the way both the survivors and the zombies take advantage of this environment is a clever way to put them both on similar playing fields to add to the suspense. Also, holy shit is Don Lee just a badass in every movie hes in? Somehow, he was the best character in this and Eternals. I need to check out some more of his stuff.

Tom Nook - Yup, it's a zombie. Now try and think of anything this did to make it stand out from all the other zombie movies.

This is a bad criticism because it did try to stand out. I think the movie is pretty average and certain parts I thought were downright bad. But some parts were very good. But to say it didn't stand out at all is a bit weird.

1. Get Out (100 points)

Why I Chose It: In 2017,nobody expected Jordan Peele, who had worked in comedy his whole career, to come out with one of the most well-written, critically-acclaimed, culturally relevant, and scariest films of the decade. Yet, Get Out proved Peele could do it all - infusing his horror with satirical comedy to potent results and attention-grabbing box office success, and joined a small canon of horror films to have ever been nominated for Best Picture.

Inviso - Now, as I write this, there are still ten movies left for me to watch. But godDAMN do I already feel bad about not ranking this in the one spot. Its THAT good, but just not QUITE good enough to surpass the current number one (or perhaps future number ones). Jordan Peele is able to make a serious movie, yet injected the right amount of humor to lighten to mood and take the films foot off the gas just enough to leave the audience smiling. The whole concept is great, as we spend the first half of the film watching an unsettling story of a black boyfriend surrounded by his white girlfriends all-too-accommodating family. But then the twist happens, and suddenly the whole movie takes this insane hard right turn. Its great, because it manages to ground the plot in some sort of reality, without playing into the most obvious stereotypical plotlines one might expect from racially-charged stories. And to top it off, it ended on a high note, with a win for the protagonist. It didnt need to have that, but the fact that it did just left me smiling at the end. Its just a great capper for the film.

Snake - What a film. Radically charged, yet surprisingly funny, Peele infused his main protagonist with all the pathos reflecting our scary modern age. Peeles impressive screenplay aside, his sense of atmosphere is near unparalleled. Peele makes sure every character in this besides Chris acts with this sense of self-important awkwardness, like theyre doing Chris, a black man, such a favor by inviting him into their home and letting him date their daughter. Its funny because its just so real. Peele creeps under your skin with this constantly, until it goes full-blown sci-fi horror and you realize just how much of a front it all really was. Im glad a film like this isnt exactly subtle - as much I preach a great horror film providing the less is more approach something like Get Out works equally as well because there is no confusion - Peele is making a staunch point here and he wants to make sure you know it. With a fantastic attention to detail and foreshadowing, Get Out is an impressive work of horror on all fronts and its just the kind of thing I want to see more of in the decades to come.

Tom Nook - My placement for 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th were relatively interchangeable, but this 2nd place was definitively locked in. This is an excellently written movie, with a original concept. In some ways, it feels like a B-movie concept, but the way it was done is very top notch. The acting is great, and the way the plot plays out is very satisfying, both for first time watches and rewatches. Although Peele himself is somewhat liberal, this movie was a satire making fun of how over the top liberal Hollywood is, and how they were using black people to pat themselves on the back; the satire in this is even more biting in recent times. I also do love movies when a likable protagonist is able ferociously escape, creating a big body count of the memorable villains along the way. And what better way to create a terrible villain than by having her eat Froot Loops like that.

BetrayedTangy - I feel like Get Out works much better as a social satire than it does a horror movie, and I think thats why Im having such a hard time ranking this one. I think I actually prefer the first half of the movie, where the focus is on Chris and how uncomfortable hes feeling around the Armitages and this sort of modern racism thats been running rampant for the past several decades. Its almost like its giving the audience a slight glimpse into what it can be like being black. One of the most magical things about movies is how they can make us step into another character's shoes and make us feel the same thing they are. So, in a way its Jordan Peele forcing the audience to better understand things like racism. To me thats what makes Get Out so fucking good. I will say though once we get to the climax a little bit of that is lost as the movie goes full tilt horror and turns into an escape sequence. Its still a really good one thats super satisfying, but compared to the rest of the movie its a slight step down.

PrinceKaro - A young interracial couple heads out to the countryside to meet the parents and much awkwardness ensues with creepy soon to be in-laws and their bizarrely behaving house servants.

The film does a good job of subverting expectations about the nature of the family and what is really going on, and keeps on subverting what you think you know up until the very last scene.

There are no monsters or supernatural forces here, just the one true evil in the world, people. This twisted family and their plans for eternal life never disappoint, even if the scenario is a bit over the top.

It is something that is unique and brilliant, and is certainly the cure for the common horror.

Rockus - Some great debuts here and probably none as surprising as Jordan Peeles Get Out. I dont know if anyone would have suspected one half of the Key & Peele sketch comedy team to quickly become the most successful horror film director of the last decade but its well deserved. And Get Out is as assured as any of the other debuts on this list. As for comparing his two films I lean a little to preferring Get Out because of how clearly he defines what its about. Drawing attention to the long history of exploitation of black bodies Peele delivers a sinister horror film thats partially so frightening because even if you stripped the film of its fantastical elements it would still leave it a rather raw and authentic depiction of the United States.

Lighting Strikes - Now youre in the sunken place.

It is really striking that not only is this Jordan Peeles directorial debut, but also he was mainly known for comedy before this. Those comedic roots do slightly show themselves here, as this is very much a satire on liberal white racism in America, presented as a chilling horror story. The social commentary here is quite cutting, and definitely unique for this type of film. It feels like every shot has some kind of deeper meaning that adds to the central commentary the film is making. I also think this film is very effective in not just the message itself but the way it gets the message across, the fact that this film was such a breakout and reached the type of audience you wouldnt think would be the typical ones to go with that kind of film speaks to that.

Setting aside even the deeper layers though, this is just a fantastically executed horror film. The atmosphere is absolutely perfect throughout, keeping this creepy, weird feeling that something isnt quite right here. It clearly comes from a place of love for horror, and the whole film reimagines The Stepford Wives in a modern way. Even in terms of direction the film excels, the sunken place scene is a great example of some really unique visual horror. Even if there was nothing else to this film it would still be a great chiller.

Perhaps the most impressive thing about the movie however is the way in which it seems that every single part of the story works together. There is an unbelievable amount of foreshadowing, what seem like throwaway events come back in exciting ways that make an impact on the plot. Its not just random references to things that will happen either, it serves to make the whole film feel extremely finely crafted like everything has always been building towards what happens. This is a film that really rewards rewatching it, I very much enjoyed this film the first time I saw it, then the second time I realised that this may be a masterpiece disguised as something much more straightforward. If a film gets better the more you see it and the more you think about it, thats a great sign of quality.

5/5

Biggest scare: The scene where control seems to be broken over the woman for just a few seconds is deeply unsettling.

Red13n - Odd creepy racist comments are actually disguisted we're going to creepily put our brain in your body racist comments. It seems simple enough but the way the comments leading up to the reveal just feel inocculously racist instead of far more sinister was quite clever. The reveal is neat but the movie drags a bit with a generic murder spree and finishes with a very convenient escape played mostly for laughs.

Thesmark - One of the best constructed horror scripts youll ever find, on a re-watch knowing where its going theres a ton of set-up for the reveal thats hidden in plain sight. But beyond just construction, its incredibly entertaining even if its incredibly blunt with its ideas, ratcheting up the tension with more and more things that just feel wrong and playing off the uncomfort of its main character as a black man in a very white setting (something rarely explored in popular studio fare). I like the whole cast, especially Kaluuya being wonderfully expressive even when hes trying to bury his feelings towards his condescending white hosts and Catherine Keeners menace. The ending is incredibly satisfying too-I dont think the movie would have been as successful as it was if they had gone with the original ending.

Johnbobb - Has anyone, ANYONE, flipped their public image on its head as fast as Jordan Peele? Seriously, how does half of the silliest sketch comedy duo of the era become the indisputed master of racial-tension horror overnight? I still haven't figured it out, but it's really weird the way she eats her froot loops separate from the milk, almost like she doesn't want the white to mix with the ooooohhhhhhhhhhhh

FFDragon - Who knew Peele had this in him? So creepy, so hard hitting, and so fresh.

Fortybelowsummer - That moment when you realized Jordan Peele, the hilarious sketch comedy actor, has a legit eye for horror (Oh yeah, also: rich people being evil alert, again!) So, heres the top 10, which does not mean my reviews will get any longer or more insightful. Maybe a little, I dont know. Get Out is awesome. Some may be put off by its sociopolitical commentary but to me it doesnt feel preachy or detract from the thrilling, disturbing story. Peele pays homage to all kinds of other films and his passion for those films and more importantly, the state of race relations in America, is evident. Amazing effort for a first time film and deserving of the praise that it gets.

Jcgamer107 - Really impressive for Jordan Peele to switch from comedy to horror and immediately succeed (the two are linked, of course). TSA guy is one of the best sidekicks ever and basically represents the audience. A wild journey with a satisfying ending.

Plasmabeam - Much like It Follows, Get Out is tense and gripping until it stumbles in the final act. The tonal shift from nerve-wracking racial drama to cartoonish B-movie gimped this movie hard.

Suprak - B
It wasnt until I started trying to place Get Out that I realized just how strong of a list this was. First time through the list and going over the movies I already say, my gut feeling was Get Out would be top five. And now, as Im writing this with a handful of movies left to watch, Im not even sure this will make the top half. And thats the thing this isnt a bad movie. This isnt even close to a bad movie. This is a really good movie that is almost a great movie and I still am not sure at this point if its going to manage to crack the top half. So, uhgreat list! Good going, Snake5s.

The opening to this movie is incredible. I loved the first half of the film where its building on the mystery and this genuine uncomfortableness that Chris is feeling that slowly finds its way into terror. The mystery was spoiled for me a little bit by the previews I think, and I had figured out the twist of this movie before the film even started. That doesnt make it any less good though, and Peele does an amazing job blending sort of the subtle uncomfortableness of race relations in America (the one older woman at the party creepily manhandling Chris and the montage of awkward racial questions that follows) and good ol fashioned movie scares. The scene with all of them talking and then falling silent as Chris makes his way up the stairs might not make 100% sense logically, but it looks fantastic. The sunken place is genuinely iconic and one of the best ideas of any horror film on this list. That sense that you are not in control of you body, that you are stuck as a passanger sort of watching going on without any control that is the sort of horror that absolutely works for me. The whole first half of the movie (two thirds? Up to the point where Chris gets captured) is really just excellent. The performances by the actors caught in that sunken place, how unsettling it is to know something is wrong but you dont know what, and that reoccurring theme of being an other is a community that doesnt understand or accept you. Its a fantastic mix and I was really hooked on that part of the movie even during my rewatch.

What keeps it out of the top tier here for me though is really just a lot of little things. The movie has a very bad habit of throwing logic out the window for the sake of the plot, and it kept taking me out of the movie. Why the hell does Rose keep photographic evidence of all her past kidnap victims in the room SHE IS SHARING WITH HER BOYFRIEND? And then why is that door just open? And then why, after Chris sees this irrefutable evidence that shes in on it, does he stand there begging her to get the keys? That twist is spoiled a minute early that it should be because by that point everyone (even Chris) should know that Rose is working with her parents. Im also not fully sold on their plan to have their daughter befriend/date these people for MONTHS AT A TIME, presumably getting to know their friends and have their pictures taken with them and put on social media, only for them all to go disappearing after she tells all of their friends that theyre VISITING HER FAMILY. Like she straight up tells Lil Rey Howerys character where Chris is going on the phone, and even if she didnt you would assume Chris would bring it up in passing to at least one other person. How was she not immediately caught when the second boyfriend went missing and the cops were like hey didnt we just talk to you like a month ago? The brothers plan isnt much better, and aggressively fighting and snatching someone walking down the middle of the street is something you do only if you want to get arrested.

Logical gaps aside, I also felt like the back half of the movie was nowhere near as strong as the first. It almost feel like a different film at that point, and all the clever stuff I liked sort of goes out the window. There is this huge focus on Lil Rey Howery, which isnt a huge deal by itself because I love Lil Rey Howery in this movie. My favorite scene of the movie is actually the part where Lil Rey Howery is trying to convince the cop that there is a weird kindapping sex slave cult targeting black people, and she calls her coworkers in and they all stand there laughing at him. Lil Rey Howery really carries that back third of the movie, which is fine but there is also a very strong shift in tone to comedy/action with the focus on Howery and Chris fighting geriatric medical professionals and women much smaller than him. The payoff here didnt feel like it was worth it to me and when the wrap up to the film is Im TSA it feels a bit cringey. Ive seen the alternate ending, and I dont necessarily think its any better. I can see why Peele went with the ending he did, and I can see arguments for the stronger focus on Howery, but at the same thing I just wasnt as interested as things were wrapping up. All that fun creepiness from the first half of the movie is largely gone and I was checking my watch fairly frequently there at the end.

I dont want to harp on that too much though, because this is still a good horror film with some fantastic creativity. It is impressively shot too, particularly for Peeles first time directing a feature film like this. It is interesting and unique and has something to say and has a genuine perspective all of this stuff is way more important to me than the stuff I was just complaining about. It stands out in the genre, and theres a reason Peele is one of the biggest names in horror today. This was one of the harder films for me to rank, because I kept trying to move it upwards only to move it back down several times. I certainly see why people would rank it higher though, and I anticipate Im going to be one of the lower ranks for what a lot of people consider to be one of the best horror films in recent memory. Im not quite there, but Im also wouldnt complain if it wound up being in the top 5. I think its a really good film that is one more rewrite away from being a great one, but it is absolutely worth a watch.

Not a surprising number 1. Also not surprising that I was the lowest ranker as whenever I discuss this with people I tend to be the one least enthusiastic about it. It is certainly the most notable horror film of the 2010s even though I think there are a lot of others that are better.

Really fun project Snake! Thanks for compiling the list as I saw a lot of movies I loved that I never wouldve seen otherwise. Looking forward to the 2010s snubs list and the 90/00/10s hybrid project I am now drafting you to host at some point.

My thoughts exactly. The first 70% of Get Out movie is Top 5 material, but then the last 30% is Bottom 5 material. The tonal shift was way too severe for me. It would be like if Green Room suddenly turned into Tucker & Dale near the end.

Thanks all! Oh and thanks plasma for doing the Vegas betting thing, that was a fun little side thing to encourage discussion too.

I'd mention my distaste for people who just label Get Out as an "anti-white" movie, but I'm sure I already did.

I went to Netflix to watch The Lighthouse only to find it wasn't there anymore.

*highfives Tangy for the low Busan and high Get Out combo*

Can't believe that there wasn't a single #1 for Get Out though. How often in these does that happen where the winner has no #1s?

Anyway, it'll be a massive upset if Train to Busan wins, so I'm predicting Busan as my final bet for the list.

I did make a bet, so I win the Vegas betting. >_>

I don't remember all the projects specifically but I'm going to guess not too often.
