Hmmm I might look into making a list for War movies, I doubt I'd be able to host though.

I'd love to see your list because I almost hosted War movies over 2010s horror.

I actually like LMSs idea (2010s franchise revivals), but I think the choice of films is not good because theres too many sequels to revivals rather than just the revivals themselves.

Might even do better to expand the range on this to "Post-2000." Then you can have movies like Rocky Balboa (2006) and the new Top Gun movie that just came out.

More importantly, how long does a franchise need to be on hiatus for it to be considered a "revival"? 10 years? 15?

So far the ones at least two of us agree on are.

Bridge on the River Kwai (1957)
Dr. Strangelove (1964)
The Deer Hunter (1978)
Apocalypse Now (1979)
Platoon (1986)
Full Metal Jacket (1987)
Braveheart (1995)
The Thin Red Line (1998)
Saving Private Ryan (1998)
The Patriot (2000)
Black Hawk Down (2001)
Troy (2004)
The Hurt Locker (2008)
Inglourious Basterds (2009)
American Sniper (2014)
Dunkirk (2017)
1917 (2019)

So that leaves 13 spots.

Some easy cuts from my list are
  • Forrest Gump
  • Pan's Labyrinth
  • Cap and Wonder Woman
  • Fury
  • Uncle
  • Hacksaw
I'm also not super attached to Schindler or WarGames, although I do think they add some variety

I say Hacksaw Ridge should absolutely make the list. Doss' perspective and a medic/conscientious objector is very unique.

I guess since we are talking possible inclusions I should give them some comeuppance.

Last Samurai. This movie is awesome. It's interesting. It has a good story (haha fern gully dances with wolves avatar etc). Good actors. Shows the transition of technology in war.

We Were Soldiers. It has to be there right? The innovation of the helicopter as air cavalry. They just renamed the fort after the guy this movie is based on and his wife for how the notifications of death evolved due to her.

Gladiator. Eh. Not really a war movie.

Enemy at the Gates. The battle of Stalingrad. Few movies focus on the snipers in the actual battlefield. Use of propaganda in war. Rachel Weisz? Need I say more Rachel Weisz hello. Plus it seems apt to see some Russian tactics in the beginning that many attributed to going on now in Ukraine to an extent.

Pearl Harbor. You might not like the love story. But, so what? This depicts the devastating attack of Pearl Harbor and the Doolittle raid. It's Hollywood but it's a well done movie too. Not sure why it gets hate.

Flags of our Fathers. I feel like this or Letters of Iwo Jima have to be here to represent Eastwoods foray into war directing. Its interesting telling the war from both perspectives.

Kingdom of Heaven. Directors cut and go. Crusades represent. Saladin. Orlando Blooms best role ever. Liam Neeson? Lezz go.

Ironclad. Moreso a siege movie than a war movie. But it's a lesser known gem.

Alamo. Underrepresented in the list. Again moreso a siege movie. Interesting though. Despite critically panned.

Alexander. This cannot be missing from a war movie list. War epics like this probably will never be made anymore. This is as close as you are getting to LOTR relatively in real life. And it's about the greatest conqueror the world has ever known. Colin Farrel miscast but still great and my God is that Angelina Jolie. Good lord.

Revenge is a really fun theme that I'd be down for depending on the movie list.

I'm not the biggest fan of war movies, but honestly that list looks pretty appealing so I'd probably do that too.

Has anyone done "blockbuster" movies before? Like highest grossing movies over a span? The 2010s are kind of a mess but there are other decades or eras where that might be interesting to look at.

So looking at the sheet, what's next? The Redwall series on Netflix?
So that's where it gets tricky. Next will be the first Crime list.

Ermine was next in rotation but hesitates to try to run because the lists he'd have interest in are pretty limited appeal (like Redwall) and would likely suffer for participation.

Scarlet, JONA and Wickle don't really participate anymore, and KBM does but isn't available to host right now, hence why it dropped all the way down to Crime.

I updated the timeline as it looks right now, subject to change on availability, but basically:

John - Crime 1
Ermine/Wickle/KBM if they decide to host
Stifled - Westerns 2
Karo - Animation 4
Snake - War
John - Crime 2

@Johnbobb Very solid list. If you're at all flexible with suggestions for the list: are you familiar at all with the Battles without Honor and Humanity series? A Yakuza film makes sense for the list and the first film in the series is kind of the gold standard within Japan for them. Tokyo Drifter is another one of my favorite Yakuza films that I would highly recommend.

So

I was going to say no because I spent a while on the crime lists limiting them down to what they are

BUT I looked that up and man does that seem like a good fit. Literally referred to as the "Japanese Godfather" on Wikipedia

I might need to think about it, but also wouldn't be opposed to it in any other list either

Are you going by the poll results because I don't think organized crime is gonna win?
