i will warn you, chapter 4 is probably the slowest one. caused the most noticeable hit to my playthrough topic. really had to force myself to push through there.

The first half of episode 4 is the worst part of Umineko, but the second half of episode 4 is the best part of Umineko

There are some definite slow and sluggish parts to the first half of 4 but it also has some of the most raw and real moments in the whole freaking series. I disagree with anyone who says it's the worst part of Umineko.

I mean, if all you want is fun magic and logic battles all the time, then sure, you can have that with the rest of the series, but there is a TON to like about the first half of 4, at least imo.

Well, I won't say anything more about it since plum isn't there yet, but I enjoy the emotional moments Umineko provides, too. Didn't get many of them from that part of the story though.

These newfangled versions have voice acting too, don't they? Boggles my mind to think how much longer it must be with that when it's already so huge.

That's the version I played, I've just never been shackled with having to listen to the entire voice read for ever line.

This happening right after Kraus and Natsuhi die makes me think that if there is a non magical explanation here it has to be Eva went mad after finding the gold and killed everyone.

I am assuming that this point the non magical explanation is probably not consistent across games, and like in Higurashi there isn't a consistent killer. I think that is the only real way this is plausible

Like wasn't in game one Godha mad or something? I might have to review the notes to try to figure out who had a motive. (Though Kinzo always seems to have a motive or something)

This is pretty interesting, Eva flickering into ... Well, Eva means that Beatrice is possibly a singular person different person as well?

Also I find it amusingly consistent that these murders were fairly obviously Eva which I thought was odd given how cryptic the previous ones were, but lines up with Eva being worse at murdering than Beatrice.

This section with Eva playing the game has been the most entertaining since the end of Chapter 2

So, thoughts after episode 3

• I really like how they hint at things that are relevant in the future. The story does an excellent job of making random asides that are important later. Im sure Ive missed a few relevant ones, but picking up on stuff like Kyrie has a daughter and wondering what happened to her turning into what is apparently a main character is kind of cool
• Having said that, I think the mysteries that are obviously holes are a bit weaker. I thought episode 3 was a bit more straight forward in this regard where you could see how Eva lined up to be the criminal (Which makes sense given Eva wasnt a good Beatrice) but I feel weve spent hours talking about locked rooms that wont be relevant for 50 more hours or so, and they arent the fun kind of mystery that is solvable. Just kind of a hole that will never be answered until it inevitably comes up again. Hope I remember it.
• Which honestly brings me to my biggest complaint, holy crap does this game need to be edited down. I feel like you could cut hours out here without really removing the integrity of what you are doing. Some of these love story conversations from Shannon/Kannon seem to just last forever and keep being brought up! The whole preamble with George and Shannon was fine but we keep going back to that and it just doesnt seem to be necessary at all. This game is already way too long. An editor would have helped.

Probably going to keep going but if chapter 4 is really slower than 3 this is going to be tough. I was struggling through 3 until Eva got to the game board (Those last 2 hours or so were great)

I dont know if I can take another 5 hours of exposition before someone dies again

Oh and also there are definitely still holes here. How exactly did George die? Or the servants? That doesnt make sense it being Eva.
It would be interesting to study what happened to try to figure it out but there is no way in hell that is happening with how long it is

I mean, the locked room mysteries are definitely solvable. The big mystery at the end of EP3 is a particularly interesting one. There's nothing special you need to wait for to figure out possible solutions to these.

Episode 4 is extremely slow. Episode 3 is like the most action packed and tightly paced episode of any of them. You can really stop because I don't think you're getting through EP4.

That's probably not it, but seemed like there were avenues to explore that Batler gave up on

The problem isn't how Nanjo was killed (because according to the red, it was face to face with a weapon such as a gun), but by whom. Eva lists out all 18 people on the island and says in red that 15 are dead, and how none of the 3 living were the ones to do it.

You should have, I'm guessing it's just all the magic scenes that the intro spoils? That and Ange maybe. As long as we're talking about the first OP, then sure, you definitely have.

Good to see we are back to being reminded why I could never recommend this to anyone. Battler has crossed the line from creeper to gross some time ago but nice reminder.

Also why is Battler....totally fine? Is this part of the mystery or is this a plot hole. Seems odd he would have been so hurt by Beatrice last game and now he is like sup beato

I thought the turn from Beatrice to helping was clumsy enough that I felt kind of dumb I forgot about the north wind story honestly.

Like it was a cool moment, but it felt more like a resolution to a narrative problem than a surprising twist if that makes sense.

Ive been playing in detective mode so I noticed Beatrices actions were oddly out of character so that resolved that issue.

I guess other people were surprised by the reveal?

I wonder if the art translated older Beatrice opening her eyes differentlythan original art.

So I was having it playing on auto and I think I might have missed something so I'm not 100% clear on how this diary of Maria is making Maria appear (Though I am betting it wasn't clear even if I was paying attention)

But you know, this game has played so much with what is real and isn't it wouldn't surprise me if some of the characters in the first few chapters were completely different from what was being shown to the reader somehow. Eva-Beatrice was a character from within Eva personafied, this Maria appears to be the same

So it wouldn't shock me if perhaps there was some sort of trickery of that sort that contributed to the murders in the first 2 games.

Eva passed the name Beatrice on at the end of Ep3 to Ange along with the gold before she died.

Also I am very confused how this Maria is basically a different person. Maria in the first chapter was trash tier, this Maria is a different character.

I also am wondering if Rosa is actually working after the comment about her getting wasted. I mean they aren't mutually exclusive but wouldn't shock me.

Also I've been slow with continuing because I've been busy, but so far have found Ch 4 to be fairly interesting. Possible that Ch 3 was overhyped which led to me being disappointed and Ch 4 was underhyped. I've found these Maria scenes to be interesting.

Now this is strange. If she did indeed find bars of gold why would she be in a tight spot even if it wasn't proven that the other family members were certainly dead. Seems fairly simple to grab one at some point.

Also I like the tie in this has between the past conversation about the truth changing as time passes. The story of the Witch wasn't real until people started to believe it, so would it change again in the future as more information is found?

Anime fight scenes are the best
