Funny enough, I first played this a long time ago. Like a decade ago annd..... I don't really remember what happened. I pirated it and maybe I lost the laptop or something. I remember playing it on an airplane and can't really remember when.

Anyways, someone said I should make a playthrough topic and I am hoping that makes me actually follow through this time.

I think it's funny how bad the grammar is in the title screen. I don't recall any issues with that the first time so I assume they just... didn't try there.

Maybe I'm spoiled from the House on Fata Morgana but the translation is really noticeable.

Found a patch online that at least puts the text in text boxes instead of randomly on top of everyones faces

It starts to pick up at dinner, and really starts to get going on day 2.

I am pretty surprised by the lack of polish this game has. I mentioned the odd translation, but it bugs me that it seems my settings don't save between games. You would think that would be pretty easy.

I feel like this game could use a rerelease

Also the unusually sexual dialogue keeps throwing me. But why though

Also I should note the translation is actually very, very accurate. It's been through a lot of revisions over the years to make sure.

The 'weirdness' is just Ryuukishi's writing style combined with the translation decision to stick as close to it as possible with formatting (ie leaving the massive overuse of ellipsis and such). But the actual contents of the translation are very solid on the whole.

I do recommend the voice acting, though. The VAs are extremely good.

Yeah there's no world where Umineko gets a dub, lol.

The VA work is truly excellent across the Board, though.

Its funny, I've heard so many good things about Umineko, but man these steam achievement stats are horrendous

I'm trying to be enthused but man, it has been slow to start. The most interesting part so far was definitely the contract discussions of the siblings, and that was both not very long and also probably not everyone's cup of tea.

I really hope it picks up

Umineko gets fucking nutso toward the latter chunk of chapter 1, but the start can be very slow for some.

Then 2 starts a little slow and also goes insane.

Then you hit 3 and the transcendent experience begins.

It definitely does pick up a lot.

Also honestly knowing steam stats if anything that's a really high number for a VN lol

The previous achievement was at 68% so 16% of players gave up between the ....what? 2nd and 4th hour or so?

I dunno. I mean, I don't have that achievement either. May have some false positives.

Yeah but that doesn't really surprise me anyway. I just meant a lot of people buy VNs and then not get past the first few hours in general.

The first Episode is well known for starting very slowly and uninterestingly. Lots of people don't make it past the first half of it, was well known even far before it got put on Steam.

If you've gotten to the siblings argument you're getting pretty close to the end of the slow portion. Another chapter or so before dinner and then another 1-2 chapters after that before day 2, going off memory.

Also I should point out that....a LOT of Umineko players didn't buy the game on steam...or at all.

Ok well we are finally getting somewhere interesting.

The biggest mystery to me right now is how this plot is going to make sense when you killed off a third of the cast 5% of the way in to the game. I have to assume they aren't just gone gone given that would be a giant waste of character development.

I mean Higurashi did it, but for the life of me I can't think of a way that would make sense that isn't just how Higurashi did it... but I suppose that sort of mystery is the appeal huh

Yeah, its the ratio of fall which raises a red flag for me, not anything to do with the absolute numbers.

Because if it is a mystery, there are some interesting clues going on. The fact that the key was taken and returned to the servants room is interesting, so is the fact that Eva's family had nobody die. Both of those things make me say Hmm

But if its mystical (Which given Higurashi is probably more likely) and Beatrice really is a real magical witch I can probably just stop paying attention to anything that resembles a traditional mystery clue because it could be literally anything.

Hours into this damn chess board line of thinking this is still true. This is either a complete waste of time or there is going to be some sort of shocking revelation which is going to blow my mind.

I hope the latter is true given how much people like this, but it wouldn't be the first time that I didn't like something popular because of logical issues. I hated Wall-E for instance because the actions of the humans made zero sense when you really thought about them.

Starting to think there has to be a time skip here. I did think that 1988 or whatever was a weird setting for a game like this. My hot predix is everyone but battler and Maria dies and chapter 2 is 15 years later or something

Of course there are 8 chapters so I don't know if that works, but with how people are dropping like flies I don't know how you would do it otherwise without, well, you know the obvious
