Beginning next year, Palm Springs will give some transgender and nonbinary residents a monthly payment as part of a guaranteed basic income pilot program. The Palm Beach City Council voted unanimously to provide $200,000 toward research and other startup costs for the project in a March 24 meeting.
The plan, administered by Palm Springs-based advocacy group DAP Health and Queer Works, has no stipulations regarding how recipients must spend the money but states that transgender and nonbinary residents are particularly vulnerable to unemployment, homelessness, assault and discrimination. The city has said that the program is only for people who meet a poverty threshold, Fox News reports.
The program will also seek state funding from the $35 million allocated in 2021 toward guaranteed income programs across California with an expected launch between October and February 2023, according to NBC Los Angeles.

Im a fan of some type of universal income to help ensure everyone has basic rights to housing, food, and medical care so it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

I'm both trans and pro universal income, and while I agree with the logic, I'm not sure I could support this move. It seems like it would give people a reason to target trans people.

Not to mention, what's the criteria for being trans or non binary. Socially transitioning? Medically? Going to therapy? It just seems like anything they choose is wrong and exclusive even in the community they are trying to help.

So how do you prove it? Can I just say I'm non binary? I don't see how they could possibly deny someone.

Im honestly surprised that the California city doing this universal income thing isnt Berkeley.

Singling out trans/NB people for this test seems like it's going to make it hard to collect meaningful data. It means you've got a smaller sample size to work with (making the experiment cheaper), and the rationale of genderqueer people being more susceptible to poverty has some merit, but there are plenty of poor people that aren't trans who are just as in need of this.

That, and $200k for something like this is basically nothing. Experiments like these need to be long-term, and while obviously you can't run them with really large populations, that's going to pay for like two people for five years (assuming $20k/year).

That isn't what universal means, it's also weird that this is how they choose to test it.

Ain't entitled to it. The world's history is an essay in conquest, slavery, and assimilation. If we're going down the road of everyone who's ancestor has ever been slighted in one way or another by any group based on ethnicity/religion/social status, it would never fucking end.

The people who were the most advanced, whether it was militarily or economically, won or were in control over others, and the perpetual whining of some pathetic morons with a victim complex doesn't make them entitled to shit.

I don't understand how you can test out a universal system with a non-universal group. That doesn't make any sense and it's going to drum up even more shit against a group that's already facing an intense ramping up of hatred and violence across the globe.

I think that's mostly just the headline being wrong. The text of the article calls it a guaranteed basic income, which is different from a universal basic income. They're very similar concepts, though, which some people get confused by.

As for testing, you're pretty much always going to have to test it non-universally, even if you're looking at a truly universal approach. The idea behind testing is to commit fewer resources than would be involved in giving it to everyone, in the hopes of getting results that can be generalized and using those to guide broader policies. This probably won't yield meaningful results because of how narrow the scope is (it's just poor experimental design), but the basic concept of limiting the test to a smaller experimental group is valid.

That's the first google result for "homeless rate trans." I'm sure you could find more if you dug deeper.

It's not overly surprising. Employment and housing discrimination are pretty widespread (the former president was very public about firing a bunch of people for being trans, and a non-trivial part of the country applauded him for the decision). The high unsheltered rate is also consistent with facing harassment and discrimination whenever they try to use shelters.

It's been pointed out several times, but its $200k. An actual pittance when you are talking about government funding.

50k goes to admin fees, 10k just gets straight embezzled, 20k goes to catering, 20k more to transportation and at the end of it theres enough money to give one person 5 years of support, or 1 year for 5 people. Or 2 years for 2 people and we can just appropriate the rest for something else. Ah just screw the whole thing.

It's not overly surprising. Employment and housing discrimination are pretty widespread (the former president was very public about firing a bunch of people for being trans, and a non-trivial part of the country applauded him for the decision). The high unsheltered rate is also consistent with facing harassment and discrimination whenever they try to use shelters.

Furthermore, people are encouraged to throw their gay and trans kids out onto the streets, usually by churches or online groups. This is why a very large percentage of American homeless people are LGBT+ and often underage or started out being homeless when they were children.
My family has sheltered people who would have otherwise been homeless a few times.

Being homeless tends to cause mental illness to proliferate in a person if it wasn't causing problems before- insomnia, malnutrition, abuse, etc- but that's not what you mean, is it?
