So a new YouTube craze is people playing Smash or Pass with all the Pokmon

From what I know Markiplier did it first and I've watched the grumps do it. It was surprisingly entertaining and stupid in the best way

844. Sandaconda
First off: love Sandacondas name. Very fun, tells you lots about the Pokemon right out the gate. Design-wise, Im not super sold on this one. The big sticking point for me is Sandacondas...big donut ring around its face. I honestly didnt even see the face at first most of it is obscured by the ring.

Then I looked at it a bunch more and I started actually kind of digging it. Theres something charming and a little cute about this snake being swallwoed up by its donut body. I found some fanart (while I was trying to process the design) of someone hanging a wreath on Sandacondas neck ring, which is super cute. So yeah, not my favorite design in this topic, but I appreciate it in an off-beat, creative way. C

430. Honchkrow
Speaking of off-beat, I wouldnt have thought mafia bird Pokemon would be a thing, but I guess when you have 900 designs, some of them just have to be weird! Honchkrow just oozes personality. This Big Boss Pokemon (lmao) is a blue bird with red feathers and heres the kicker what appears to be a matching blue fedora. Do all Honchkrow come with this hat? Is this an inherent part of their species? Dire linked me to some footage of Honchkrow tipping its hat on a defeat animation, and thats so much fun. In terms of actual design, Honchkrow has the hat and also a white crest that looks vaguely like a suit and tie, and thats honestly enough to propel it high on the list. A

001. Bulbasaur
Hey, a Pokemon I sort of know! What a cutie. Talk about leading with your best foot forward the Gen 1 starters are all super adorbs. Bulbasaur looks so playful and mischievous. I love its cute proportions, with tiny paws, a gigantic face, and baby fangs. Bulbasaur was clearly designed to be one of the first Pokemon young players would encounter, and it shows in how appealing it is. The bulb on its back is curious its probably meant to be very eye-catching, but I didnt know what it was meant to be at first. It looks like garlic to me, or possibly like a dollop of green whipped cream (maybe Im just hungry lol). The bulb is an especially important of Bulbasaurs design, but I feel like if you took it out youd still have that innate cuteness thats so appealing. A low A.

463. Lickilicky
Oh my god I love this design. Its so goofy. The gargantuan tongue is so over the top, but thats not the only fun thing about Lickilicky. It has these stubby, fingerless hands that conjure up images of scooping food into its mouth. Its round (which makes sense that it would learn Rollout), and it has an ice cream swirl at the top of its head, and it even has a little bib design below its neck. They really went all in on the theming here. The one curious thing is the wi-fi symbols on its lower stomach, sort of like what Wooper has. I dont understand them on Wooper and I dont understand them here, but given that Wooper is ranked number 1 so far, I think I can let them slide with Lickilicky too. (Also, as an aside: what kind of name is that?) A

Done with page 1!

096. Drowzee
Huh, a Gen1 Pokemon I dont think Ive ever seen before. Drowzee has the Charlie Brown coloring scheme, except instead of a separate swirly bar in the middle, Drowzees swirly bar separates the yellow and black halves. The end result is a Pokemon that looks a bit like a shortbread cookie, or at the very least makes me want a shortbread cookie (I told you I was hungry!). I originally thought Drowzees face resembled a tiny elephant, but Bulbapedia directed me to the Wiki page for a tapir, another thing Ive never encountered before. Im learning so much today! Drowzee has a relatively straightforward design. Im not too enthralled by anything in it it feels a bit plain, with little to distinguish itself from other Pokemon designs. Its not bad by any means. Not every design can be Banette in terms of complexity and component parts working together. Sometimes you just want a Charlie Brown tapir shortbread cookie. Nothing simpler than that. C

578. Dousian
What a strange little creature. This Pokemon is like a stubby little fetus, with a red diamond in the middle of its face that I cant identify as a mouth or a nose, two black cartoony eyes, and stubby arms. But what makes Dousian so interesting is that its encased in some sort of ectoplasm, further giving it fetus-y vibes. I like all of these things. Theyre not top tier or anything, but theyre certainly interesting. I cant tell if I like Dousian better if the red diamond is a mouth or a nose. Its an optical illusion. Like, see the people arguing or see the hourglass, but never both at once. Clearly Dousian has Schrodingers face. C

555. Darmanitan
This is a fun design. It very clearly gets across a state of manic, destructive energy, with intense eyes, a scary, face-hogging grin, and fiery red eyebrows that scorch up from its head like lightning bolts. This is a Pokemon that means business. Its an elegant design in that way I like, where everything seems to flow together and every part serves a purpose. Darmanitan is an especially cartoony Pokemon, even more than most of whats been nominated so far; its face is full of rage but also quite goofy, so it isnt especially threatening, which is an interesting juxtaposition. A

813. Scorbunny
I always thought Scorbunny looked like another Pokemon from a different gen a grass starter, maybe? Something with the same floppy pose and buck teeth. Anyway, Scorbunny is cute in that way that all starters are cute (or at least seem to be based on my limited exposure). I like its little bowtie marking around its neck, and its red-orange-white color scheme. Its a pretty simple design, but its very effective. Im not super into the rectangular patch between its eyes is that meant to be a bandage? It does serve the purpose of making its face more exciting, so theres that, I guess. B

322. Numel
Its always a good sign when I open a Pokemons Bulbapedia page and my first instinct is to laugh at the image. Dull-witted camel Pokemon was my first guess from the design, and lo and behold I was right! That says a lot about the design (and also the name). What Numel really looks like is one of those wobbly things you see on playgrounds that kids can climb on. Numel actually looks like it could be a real animal, which is impressive given all the wacky nonsense Ive seen so far. Its markings and color scheme are relatively normal, with brown circles around its eyes and mossy coloring on its hump. Pretty neat! B

387. Turtwig
Another starter! Turtwig has always made me uncomfortable because its jaw looks like its unnaturally attached to its face, like it needs hinges or something. Kind of spoils the effect for me. Otherwise its super cute I especially love the little plant growing out of the top of its head (which Id somehow never noticed before), as well as its tiny turtle shell and big, expressive eyes. Turtwig is another Pokemon I could see owning as a pet. Shame about the jaw though. B

Time for your monthly update!

351. Castform (Snowy)
First off, I like the masquerade look Castform has. Though I initially thought of it as burglar chic, but burglars dont wear eye masks, do they? That would be silly. Castforms Snowy Form is triggered by ice and results in it being enveloped in some sort of cloud shape, or possibly whipped topping or shaving cream. Its head turns purple, with its burglar eye mask a lighter shade. I dont really know what to make of this design. It doesnt tell me a lot about the Pokemon. Maybe Id feel differently if I was more familiar with clouds and didnt mistake them for soft serve ice cream. I do enjoy that its little breast-like limbs in normal form seemingly turn into limbs held aloft in a fighting stance, so thats something. (my apologies that the Tiermaker doesnt have specific Castform so I had to use the base in the chart, but rest assured I based my judgment off the Snowy Form) C

466. Electivire
Whoa I like Electivire! I immediately think of some sort of bear, though its probably yeti-themed. A lot of these Pokemon (at least the nominations) have yellow-black color schemes. Electivires colors are bold and eye-catching. Its stripes are used sparingly but effectively, particularly the stripe over its eyes. I love the little antennae at the top, a whimsical design choice for what would be a horrifying Pokemon to run into the wild. Seriously look at that grin. I dont know whats going on with that wire in its back though? I could do without that. Otherwise, very cool. A

637. Volcarona
Volcarona is a big moth. At first I couldnt tell if it even had eyes, but it does; theyre just very small. I like its little nubby limbs, and its multiple wings. The colors are weird choices that occasionally clash, like I feel like its light blue-green abdomen should maybe be a darker color for more impact? I think I have a hard time relating to or appreciating character designs that are more...abstract, in the sense that they dont contain recognizable features like eyes, mouth, discernible body, etc. I know thats a bit speciesist, but I do struggle with looking at this bug Pokemon and not getting a little creeped out, and not in the cool way. Neat Pokemon, but definitely not for me. D

195. Quagsire
ITS A WOOPER OMG

Friendly friendo Pokemon. Very simple design: three-fingers flippers and toes, and a tail, all almost entirely blue. There appears to be a purplish stripe down its back. It is evidently very goofy and carefree (and unintelligent according to Bulbapedia). I love this thing. Ive seen Quagsire in Wooper fanart and they always make me laugh with their dim expressions. Id love one as a pet.

Its design is pretty bland though. Which actually kind of fits its personality: simple, uncomplicated. No frills. The Quagsire lifestyle, now thats the one for me.

No clue where Id rank this so Ill just trust my gut and B done with it.

568. Trubbish
I had forgotten Trubbish had been nominated. This nomination makes me happy, because Trubbish makes me happy, because I love Trubbishs design. Like, a lot.

I think a lot of these inanimate object Pokemon are very charming. Trubbish is clearly meant to be designed like a trash bag with garbage hands, stubby feet, and twist tie, bunny-like head antennae things. Its proportions are cute-sized. What totally sells Trubbish to me, however, is its face. Large eyes with tiny pupils and a lined mouth with spiky buck teeth. God its adorable. Look at this face and tell me you dont want to pet it. Okay, maybe you wouldnt want to pet something with poison powers and a horrible stench, but still, its soooo freaking cute. I cant even handle it.

Trubbish is one of the only Pokemon Ive looked up fanart for outside of this topic, which is my barometer for how much do I love its design. A top 3 Pokemon for sure, right up there with Wooper. Theres a third cute Pokemon that I dont think has been nominated yet; well see if it ever is! S

872. Snom
Oh youre the butt Pokemon. Ive heard of you. I prefer to view Snom as crawling into its shell, and its nose is actually its rear end. That honestly makes more sense to me than the way its meant to be interpreted, which is a tiny black eye that seems oddly positioned on its body. Snom is curious. Its meant to be wormlike, and its impressive that despite its sedentary art, I still get a strong sense of fluid motion. I like that half of it is in its shell, I like that the shell is spiky and translucent. Lots to like here! B

144. Articuno
You know I dont think Ive ever actually seen an Articuno up close before. Its not very ostentatious. I think I was expecting something grander, with more frills. Thats fine though! Theres plenty to enjoy, and I often dislike Pokemon that are too busy. Articuno actually sort of resembles a real animal, or at least is pretty close. Its a big ol blue bird with large feathers, an icy head plume, talons, and perhaps most striking a long, flowing tail. The whole appearance is very regal. You see this Pokemon walking down the street and you want to stop and bow. I really like this design. It conveys a lot while not making many changes to the source material. Very cool (pun intended). A

363. Spheal
I said that I liked Quagsire for having a simple design that reflects its simple personality. Spheal also seems to have a simple personality and a relatively simple design. Its a spherical seal. What more do you need to know? Its front actually looks more like a walrus than a seal, with baby tusks, but it deffo has a seal-y fin on its backside. Little watery markings give it a bit of flair. I dont know, am I weird for kind of liking Spheal? Ive seen some folks talk down on it but its cute in that same Quagsire way. I guess I have a thing for blue? B
