357. Tropius
This ones sort of like a leafy brontosaur. I like how its almost wearing leaves like theyre clothing: its got these (ceremonial?) leaves poking out of its back, but its got a leafy green helmet a sort of leafy top covering the upper third of its body. It also has, uh, bananas growing out of its jaw? Clearly Tropius is more complex than I originally thought.

Since it ate only this kind of fruit continuously, the fruit began to grow around its neck. These yellow, banana-like fruits can be picked and consumed by other Pokmon or humans, and grow twice a year because of the rapid production of sugar in Tropius's leaves. Its feet have toenails the same color as its fruit.

What a strange Pokemon. Its design is fun and confusing in the way some of these ridiculous designs are. B

044. Gloom
Ah, Gloom, not to be confused with Goomy, who Ive already rated, or its previous evolution Oddish, who Ive also already rated. Gloom is one of the original 151 that I dont think Ive ever heard of, which surprises me because I like its design a lot. I really dig the long strands of hair that float around its face, as well as the sac atop its head that looks like a pillow. Its expression of being asleep with comical cartoon drool and perpetually closed eyes gives it a lot of personality. I wonder if this is the first line of Pokemon to have more than one rep in this topic? I found Oddish pretty plain and gave it a C; Gloom, more full of character, fairs a bit better. B

512. Simisage
I guess heres another Pokemon from a line weve already dabbled into, though Simisear seems to be slightly different? Simisage certainly has fashion choices. Bright green everywhere: ears, sleeves, pants, and especially a grotesque haircut that looks like its trying to be a pompadour. I sort of dig the white fur on its shoulders and its eyebrows, but Simisage is just...aggressively green. I dont have anything against simple color patterns, but I get the sense Simisage is, like...trying to be cool? Which is silly, because its not like its wearing clothes, the green is part of its fur. But like, I look at this Pokemon and think maybe it should wear clothes. Put on a vest or some overalls. Tamp down that hairdo. I dont know. Im probably getting a lot of guff for this one, but what can I say, I am tough but fair. D

502. Dewott
Dewott is cool. I like Oshawott for the overwhelming cuteness, but Dewott has this samurai vibe going that it rocks pretty well. Its got Oshawotts cute lil face but with a determined look, letting you know it means business. I like the white whiskers and the topknot-like fin at the back of its head. One thing I dont like that sort of spoils the effect is its lower half. I dont mean the scalchops, those are a part of its character, I get that. I just like...what is happening with that fur? What is that meant to be? What am I looking at? My brain cant comprehend it. Im sure there are real life animals with that lower-body-half fur seemingly spread at random around their waist, but it really throws me for a loop every time. Without that, Dewott would probably be an easy A; as things stand though, I unfortunately must give the Samurai Pokemon a B.

122. Mr. Mime
Ive gone through a lot of strange designs so far, but maybe the strangest, at least on paper, is Mr. Mime. A cross between a clown and a ventriloquists dummy, Mr. Mimes limbs are thin and wooden-looking. Its head is bald on top with stereotypically clown-like tufts on the sides. Its long, gloved fingers each have a tiny dot on the digit, giving the impression of a Pokemon skilled dexterously. It also wears clogs. What an interesting design Mr. Mime has. The most striking thing, on top of all that, is honestly its body, which looks like a bouncy ball. Mr. Mime screams childhood toy. I was expecting something creepier, like a darker depiction of the clown trope, but Mr. Mime feels pretty innocent and even nostalgic. Not sure why this one is so maligned. A

???. Sprigatito
Oh no, a new Pokemon I cant add to the Tiermaker! Youll just have to imagine its placement.

Sprigatito, in keeping with a lot of the starter designs Ive seen, takes a fairly simple concept and tweaks it in an engaging and creative way. Obviously its based on a kitten, but the design takes that template and makes it a bit more alien, with bold tufts of fur, markings over its eyes and forehead, and a cute, fun green color scheme that would make Simisage jealous. Its bright brown eyes, one of the only non-green parts of its body, really pop. Its one of those rare Pokemon I just want to play with and pet. Very nice. A

???. Fuecoco
And then we have this little doofus. Fuecoco looks like the half-distant cousin of Bub and Bob from Bubble Bobble. Its bright red color scheme and little stem on the top of its head conjure images of an apple. Despite being made of mostly mouth, Fuecoco has tiny (and not many) teeth. It has stubby hands but strong-looking feet, and a bright, happy expression. As with Sprigatito, Fuecoco is another precocious little Pokemon Id love to play with. Theyre really knocking it out of the park with these new starters! A

As I said above, this Tiermaker doesn't include the new starters (or the Hisuian Zorua I rated) so you'll have to pretend. Fuecoco probably goes in between Articuno and Honchcrow, and Sprigatito between Honchcrow and Electivire. Feel free to adjust these placements in your head if you're unhappy with them.

869. Alcremie
...is this literally a whipped cream Pokemon

thats, uh, thats apparently a thing

So uh Alcremie is a whipped cream Pokemon with a body that seems to consist almost entirely of, uh, whipped cream. Theres stubby little arms and flowing hair tufts and little berries above its eyes and like I dont even know what to say here. The design isnt super inspiring or creative, its just whipped cream. I feel like there are other things to do with a whipped cream Pokemon. But of course I cant think of any, so maybe Im no better than Game Freak at this! Kind of a shame I have to come back to this with such a negative writeup, but thems the breaks. D

163. Hoothoot
There have been lots of cool bird Pokemon posted in this topic, and Hoothoot continues the trend. Its an owl with some clock decals on its face: gear markings under its eyes and clock hands for eyebrows. Super cool! I love this bulbous, disgusting-looking single foot it has in the official art (though apparently it has two basic-looking feet and this isnt reflected in the art). The giant foot was a fun experience for me because I had taken in the rest of the design first and then I looked down and ooh HUGE FOOT. Fun design, lots of personality. B

885. Dreepy
Im pretty sure Ive never seen or heard of this Pokemon before, even accidentally or by happenstance. What a nice surprise to discover it now, because Dreepy is great. Its another absolutely batshit design that works really well. Droopy is a mostly green flying snake/ghost thing with a finned hang glider for a face. Its eyes are bright and cartoony, and it has tiny fingerless arms and no legs. According to Bulbapedia, Dreepy is a prehistoric ghost. I actually interpreted it as some sort of kite Pokemon all it needs is a string on its end. Either way, the design is super fun and unique. Its simple in execution but batshit in that it could be interpreted many different ways. I sort of like that! A

041. Zubat
Aaaaah its a bat! Oh no! Zubat is one of those first-gen designs that actually tries to look like a real animal (imagine that). It takes the starting point of a bat and makes a few light modifications: large mouth; no eyes or nose; long, stick-like legs. Its color scheme is also striking, a nice shade of blue with red wings. The design is pretty simple but elegant. With Zubat I get a sense of motion, of proportion, and of purpose. Im not as captivated as I am by, say, Dreepy, which offers a much different experience, but Zubat is pretty solid. A

132. Ditto
Aaaaah its a Ditto! Oh no! Its hard to judge Dittos appearance (maybe because it can change at will lolololol) because its simple, even compared to some of the other Pokemon Ive talked about. Its explicitly designed to be as simple as it gets: a big purple blob with dotted eyes and a small mouth. Thats it. Somehow it manages to be cute. Maybe its the sensation of wriggling that you get with a Pokemon like this. Im reminded of Goomy a bit, whom I gave an A to. This ones tricky. I think the reasons I like Ditto, like its powerset, arent super related to its design, so a C makes sense. But it is still fun.

282. Gardevoir
Gardevoir very clearly has an aesthetic its going for: elegant, flowing, dainty. (I do appreciate that there can be male Gardevoirs too!) I like the whole gown thing it has on, and how it seems to flow into its upper body seamlessly. Very windswept. I dont really like the other parts as much. I choose to interpret the red horn thing on its chest and back as a heart, but I have trouble reading Gardevoirs hair and how it interacts with the rest of its face. For the longest time, I assumed it was smiling in the official art, but apparently its not? I think also that its head is off-center, which always throws me off when I try to figure out where the rest of it is under that hair. Pluses and minuses! C

215. Sneasel
Aaaaah its a weasel thing with pointy claws! Oh no! First off, Sneasel has one of my favorite Pokemon names. Its just fun to say. Second, its design is super fun too! Very lithe, with long, thin limbs; one long ear; feathers on its back; and, notably, two claws on each hand and foot. Sneasel gives off the impression of a rascal, someone always up to no good; I also appreciate its eyelash-like markings around its eyes, perhaps suggesting a creature whos putting on a show. The claws are a distinct feature of Sneasels design, the only parts of its body colored gray. Very cool design, strong presence. A

700. Sylveon
Lucky number seven hundred! Sylveon is so pretty omg. It reminds me of Gardevoir in that flowing, elegant sort of way. I like its accessories: ribbons and bowties! Very stylish. What I really love about Sylveon is its color scheme, muted pinks, whites, and blues. It reminds me of an 8-bit gaming system, how you could be so limited with your color palette but still produce these beautiful pictures. And Sylveon is very beautiful. A real highlight. S

???. Quaxly
Completing the new starter trio, its Quaxly, a dashing young duck Pokemon. Quaxlys prominent physical characteristic is its immaculate blue hair. I like how it curves downward in the back and how theres a little segment poking out in the front. I especially love Quaxlys enigmatic :3 smile. It also has blue webbed feet! Apart from that, the design is pretty straightforward. Its funny if you would have asked me to rank the new starters before, I probably wouldve put Quaxly at 1 or 2. But this topic has given me a more critical eye on design, and now poor Quaxly comes in last among the trio. I still like it though! B
