039. Jigglypuff
Lets talk about Jigglypuff. Is there anyone who doesnt love Jigglypuff? Its one of the only Pokemon I have firsthand familiarity with due to Smash. Theres something so satisfying about Sleeping an opponent and watching them fly off the stage. Design-wise (which is what were all here to discuss), Jigglypuff is fascinating because its one of the only Pokemon posted in this topic that doesnt appear to be based on an animal or specific object, unless youre counting balloon. So they essentially built this design from whole cloth. And its great! Such a cutie. Round with pointed ears, a floppy tuft of hair/fur, and big blue eyes. If Pikachu hadnt been chosen, I could see Jigglypuff being the franchise mascot. Is my high ranking due to personal familiarity? Maybe. I like to think of it as Jigglypuff growing on me over the years, lulling me to peace with its cuteness. S

058. Growlithe
Youre all busting out the heavy hitters as the topic comes to a close, huh? This Puppy Pokemon is a creative take on the canine companion. Growlithe is covered in two types of fur: shorter orange fur that covers its body, and tufts of tan fur on its head, chest, and tail. It has black, tiger-like markings as well. The effect immediately made me want to pet its head and say good boy. Like it was uncanny. Thats how strong the design is. Im not even into dogs, but Growlithe sort of makes me wish I was. Thats pretty profound. S

283. Surskit
Finally, the Pokemon of many fanarts. Surskit is a little insect Pokemon with four long limbs. (Its power descriptions are funny it can walk on water due to secretions from its legs. Pretty neat!) The really fun part is Surskits head. At the top is a yellow hat that looks like an upside-down eye dropper; the yellow contrasts nicely with the blue. Its eyes are the big selling point for me: wide and curious, with these adorable anime blushy cheeks. The lack of a mouth is also cute. I dont know what I was expecting with Surskit (if all the fanart didnt give it away lol), but I really like it! A

516. Simipour
Boy, you all sure do like these Simi mons, huh? Simipour falls between Simisear (A) and Simisage (D). I like its blue color scheme, its big floppy ears, its water spurt-like tail, and especially its bright blue dreadlocks. It seems friendly. It looks like its wearing a dress over its fur, which is kind of funny given my complaint about Simisage not wearing clothes. Simipour seems super friendly. I could see myself growing attached to it. B

618. Stunfisk
Omg look at this little goober. It looks likes being squeezed out of a tube of toothpaste! I love how goofy Stunfisk looks, with its flat eyes and splayed out fins and popped up nose and mouth. It really like its not happy with its situation lol. Its base, aka the tube of toothpaste, is a yellow circle with lines around it I feel like Ive seen this design in other Pokemon before, am I making this up? Anyway Stunfisk is cool. S category is for Pokemon Id like to keep around, but Id be down with eating Stunfisk, maybe at some sort of seafood restaurant. Could you really tell the difference between Stunfisk while alive and Stunfisk when cooked? B

004. Charmander
What a lil cutie. I said this about Bulbasaur, but Game Freak knew what they were doing with the Gen 1 starters. I dont like Charmander as much as Squirtle, but its still pretty high tier. Bulbapedia describes Charmander as reptilian, but I always looked at it as sort of dinosaur-like, which I know doesnt make much sense. Its a bipedal orange-colored Pokemon with little baby claws and and little baby teeth and a tail thats ON FIRE seriously how could you not love Charmander. What a keeper. A

010. Caterpie
I think Ive mentioned this before but I dont love these bug Pokemon. Theres nothing inherently wrong with them, but I struggle with personifying creatures without discernible facial features. However, I will say that Caterpie is about as cute as a bug Pokemon could get for me. Its a worm Pokemon with big eyes on its head and tiny eye-like markings on its sides; these markings give it a sense of coolness, almost alien-ness, like theyre crop circles. I like the red antenna that juts out from its head too; it almost makes it look like a wind-up toy. I will be generous and give Caterpie a B because it does lots of cool things, even if theyre not necessarily to my tastes.

699. Aurorus
Aurorus is a dinosaur Pokemon. It has the general outline of a brontosaurus with some extra flair, like rhinestones; a blue and teal color scheme; a thin, spirally tail; and most prominently, wings! I dont know about you, but whenever I see a picture of a brontosaurus, I always wish it had some wings. Aurorus fulfills this deep-seated need. I feel like this design shouldnt work? It feels gaudy and even goofy. But I really like it! Theres something almost pure in the design, something that sort of reminds me of Gen 1s sensibilities. Very cool. A

And now, to wrap up the topic, a top three Pokemon that wasnt nominated, and a special guest.

194. Wooper (Paldean)
Im so glad this topic lived long enough to see the emergence of a new form for my favorite Pokemon! Paldean Wooper is . . . well, its basically like vanilla Wooper: no arms, beady eyes, big tail. The major differences are its lack of wi-fi signal on its chest (Paldean Wooper has what looks like cross-stitching), bones on its cheeks instead of antennae, and a much larger mouth. (Seriously, whats up with that mouth?) Is Paldean Wooper as cute as its normal counterpart? Well . . . not really. But its still pretty great. The mouth is what makes it great. Not quite on the level of my favorite, but still a fun design. A

Which brings us to the final Pokemon...

674. Pancham
Oh my god I love Pancham so much. You want to talk personality? Pancham has so much personality. That little pose it does, with its paws on its hips and its leg in the air and that cocky, shit-eating grin . . . its all so perfect. Pancham is a little shit and it knows it and the best thing at all its basically a child with minimal capacity to harm you. And we can tell all of this from the art! So impressive. I also love the leaf in its mouth, about which Bulbapedia says there is no actual purpose behind this leaf, aside from an attempt to look cool. I think weve all met a Pancham or two in our life. I havent even mentioned its, you know, actual design, which is basically chibi panda. And who doesnt love pandas? Classic Pokemon, one of my absolute favorites. S

Anyway, I am caught up! I have caught them all! Which means this topic is now closed to new nominations.

Thank you all for participating in this long-ass topic. I had fun and I hope you did too. This was an excuse for me to practice my skills when it comes to analyzing visual media. Since I enjoyed this so much, I plan to do another topic based on Anagrams current tiering visual media topic (though I will naturally wait until theyre done with their topic!), so keep your eyes peeled for that.

Thanks again!

It's tempting to linger in this moment, while every possibility still exists. But unless collapsed by an observer, they will never be more than possibilities.

Indeed, that's why Simipour is in my top tier of Pokemon. If Pokemon existed in real life I could see just hanging out with your buddy Simipour.

Old Wooper has the same mouth. It's just that for some reason the official artwork has him doing a smaller :o face. Most other forms of media show Wooper's mouth opening that wide, especially when he smiles (which is often).

This is true! I had forgotten about Wooper's gargantu-mouth. I love the "Just a normal day" picture. SO HAPPY
