I dont know Pokemon. I think you basically force wild animals to fight each other for profit, but its also a metaphor for growing up, and the special kinship a child has with their pets? You know, before you make them fight other childrens beloved pets? And you can trap God in a tiny ball. That seems at least a little accurate.

The actual Pokemon creatures that I do know, Ive picked up on from bits and pieces here and there. Its remarkable to me that there are over 900 of these things. So I got to thinking: I cant form a coherent opinion on Pokemon based on gameplay, but I can at least judge them by how they look, much in the same way that I judge actual people.

So why dont you go ahead and nominate Pokemon for me to rank by how much I like their design??? Wow??!!?!?! Ill primarily go by their official art on Bulbapedia, but feel free to post fanart along with your nomination, and Ill consider that too.

One nom per post; when I get to yours in the queue, then you can post again. Please name the Pokemon you post to make it easier for me to find them on Bulbapedia and also in this massive ass Tiermaker pool.

Ill try to have a Tiermaker set up with tiers:

• S: I would want this Pokemon as a stuffed animal or some sort of hood mount for my car
• A: This Pokemon has a memorable and exciting design and I could pick them out of a lineup of other Pokemon
• B: This Pokemon has an above average design but I wouldnt actually seek them out
• C: This Pokemons design is rather plain or uninteresting
• D: I dislike this Pokemons design

No tiers below D, though who knows, maybe there will be a special Pokemon or two who merits F tier. I also reserve the right to rebalance the tiers if I find that I have no idea how to appropriately rank visual elements, which is likely.

My experience is I tend to like the cuter Pokemon, but Im down to look at whatever you feel like posting. My design preferences arent objective and I might overlook some flaws in favor of silly things I like more. Please keep in mind that this is meant to be fun and I do not intend to offend anyone about their animal friend preferences.

Last thing: even though I said solely by design, Im also probably going to read the first few paragraphs on each Bulbapedia entry, especially if its a design I really like, so its hard to not factor that into the equation. But itll mostly be design. Promise.

I feel like this Pokemon has a disproportionate body. But, like, all the cute starter Pokemon do to some extent, right? Why do I only notice it with Totodile? Maybe its the massive mouth. This thing either wants to hug me or eat me, and its *counts* eight teeth probably arent going to do the latter. Totodile looks like it has plenty of love to give. I like it and would love to return that love, but there are other, cuddlier Pokemon out there. B

194. Wooper
For those that dont hang around the #vgmusic channel, you may be unaware of my Wooper fixation. Wooper is the Pokemon to beat in this topic. I love this thing: its so unequivocally goofy in every way that it warps back around to being endearing and cute. There are some odd design choices here. I get that its meant to look like an axolotl, but its lack of arms is very strange. Yet Wooper makes it work. Gotta love that hustle. I also really dig the wifi symbol on its chest. What a bizarre Pokemon. And yet its only one of a handful Ive looked up fanart of. Sweet, precious Wooper. Will you ever be defeated? S

155. Cyndaquil
Cyndaquil looks like its entire backside is on fire. But those closed eyes indicate calmness or even pleasure. I guess when youre a fire type, these sorts of things dont bother you? Anyway its a pretty basic design: some sort of stubby mouse with a long, anteater-like snout and tiny paws. Its pretty cute, but nothing about it really grabs me compared to, say, Totodile. I guess we know which starter I wouldve picked! C

870. Falinks
Nice, a newer Pokemon. Im familiar at least in passing with some of the first two generations, but not much else from the newer games. Anyway, Falinks is cool! I had to read some of the Wiki page to really understand the picture: its actually six Pokemon in one? I dig the almost chibi Goomba-esque design, with a black body and some sort of armor shaped like a knights helmet. I dont love how their arms are basically shields with points, but it does fit the overall aesthetic. Pretty cool how everything about Falinkss design fits together so nicely. A

720. Hoopa
A Pokemon with two different designs! What a cheater you are for nominating it. Ill only talk about the Confined form because the art for the Unbound form is less than helpful in interpreting the design.

Im a sucker for designs that have what in scholarly circles is known as a shit-eating grin. Hoopa is clearly very mischievous, which is evident from its facial expression but also from its official pose, like its reaching up to poke something (also by the fact that its literally called Mischief Pokemon lol). I like the different rings, though I almost feel like the design is a little too busy. Like the three rings are eye-catching, but there are also markings on Hoopas face and body. Theres a lot going on, and none of it is bad, per se, but there might be too much for me. Still, gotta love that grin. B

701. Hawlucha
Oh my god its a luchador Pokemon. I guess if you can have a Pokemon based on a keychain, why not? So its like...a bird Pokemon, but its bill isnt its mouth? It has a mouth under the bill shape. I think Im interpreting that right. I like the bright colors. The palette is clean and simple except for the head, which is colored more elaborately to convey that its styled after a mask. I want to like Hawlucha more, I certainly love the fun concept, but this is just a case of I like other things more. Sorry! C
