Sure. I can sub in a copy or two of Caius and something like Reborn/Raigeki/Feather Duster for SRs, no problem. My choices are a bit limited, but the staples are all good enough that it doesn't matter.

Of course, since I hastily threw this together because I already had the free structure deck as a basis (Plus my own actual deck is the same archetype), it has no extra deck, so I can't comment much on having it vs not having it

I can play a few games at 9:30, otherwise we can check it out tomorrow.

I don't know how to keep randos from joining rooms zzz

So we had two fairly close games of Monarch vs. Blackwings with no SRs. Game one had us both in topdeck mode for awhile there. Finished 1-1.

I was definitely missing the SR Black Whirlwinds, but overall I don't think Blackwings are TOO overpowered in the format, which is a good thing because I was worried they'd kind of just run over everything.

Had a couple of solid games with David using N/Rs only that basically saw us both win one each by topdecking the outs. Gonna try with SRs tomorrow.

Format seems fine at a quick glance, though I think we're playing two of the stronger decks in the format? Definitely prefer it to the stuff that's ranked meta lmao

May want to do some testing on my Flame Sprite deck in this too to see if it can hang with the archetypes, but XYZs in particular can totally escape a Level Limit/Gravity Bind lockdown because they don't have levels so that'll be a bit rougher. It's not an archetype per se so it wouldn't really be valid for the format, but I think that if I improve it a bit it'll still make a good measuring stick.

maybe a Flamvell or Volcanic deck with Flame Sprite as an inclusion?

currently i am liking the idea of:
- R/N only (no SRs) + Reborn, Raigeki, Judgment
- yes extra deck

because it has the lowest barrier to entry but also has the extra deck to speed things up a little so we're not playing caveman format. it would be closer to a "true" rarity lock (maybe we kick out the free cards as well then lol). also more convenient to just say "rarity lock" + 3 free cards than to add another stipulation about the 3 SRs though it's not a huge deal either way. though again, i think the choice you have to make with the 3 SR slots is pretty interesting for deckbuilding.

we'll go with whichever seems more popular though i think they'll both be fun..

btw apparently there's maintenence in Master Duel on the 16th (Wednesday). not sure if the time listed in-game is the time zone you have set or if it's on Japan time (when do the login bonuses reset btw?) but it's from 21:00 to 23:30

It's gotta be local time for the maintenance, because it says it's 23:00 to 01:30 for me

Also, I think I noticed that login bonuses reset around noon or so when we were playing the tournament.

This sounds good to me. The free cards restriction is a lot less arbitrary than "Any SR, but only a couple" IMO

Maybe, but I'm only on like 5000 gems and I'm half considering trying to burn them to build an xyz deck for the event.

Either is fine with me as well. If I was voting I'd pick the SRs option, but that's only because I already spent the gems on them.

How many gems did you spend? Also what were your 3 SRs? I think I would have gone with 2 Whirlwind, 1 Gale off the top of my head.

You don't have a stock of R/N craft points? If you do spend those gems on the XYZ deck, you'd probably end up with the extra R/N craft points anyway

I have like 400-500 of each, before breaking down junk iirc? I was thinking about it in terms of trying to pull secret packs instead of just crafting lol

I was debating that as well but ended up going 3 Whirlwind because Breeze functions very similarly to Gale for extra deck purposes when added to the hand.

Only issue with that was me realizing midway through my duels with Reg that I had no actual way to activate Breeze's effect without Whirlwind.

That's the first time someone has tried to get clever around Cosmic Blazar and attempt to destroy it when it comes back during the End Phase. And, as I learned, that extremely doesn't work. It just negates again and comes back instantly, you don't even buy a turn.

Also is this N/R + freebies ruleset also supposed to be mono-archetype? I'd want a little more clarity as to what that entails if so.

The improved Exodia decklist I want to run requires 10 SRs that I don't have and two more URs. Three of these cards (3x Piri Reis Map) are available in a secret pack. Nothing else is. It makes me want to cry

On the bright side, I have 110 UR points so I could craft myself a set of Maxx C or Called By The Grave or Forbidden Droplet if I decide I ever want to play meta. But only 60 SR points...

I think as long as your core is of one of the archetypes listed it should be fine. As for how many cards constitutes a core I think there's a reasonable range most people can agree on.

If you're asking if it can only contain cards from one archetype, not necessarily? But I would figure it would work best with one in most cases. There are some that synergize well that they're ran together a lot (e.g. Mermaids & Atlanteans but people typically don't say "I'm playing Mermails & Atlanteans" simply that they're playing Mermails). But I don't want to limit deckbuilding too much. Hoping to iron out the final rule set and post the signup topic by Friday.

I thought the idea of allowing SR slots was kind of neat instead of automatically getting the staples, but it does make things easier to check. I dug through the archetypes looking for things I'd be willing to play with just the Ns and Rs, but it's difficult, especially when you look at Synchro or Xyz decks where every in-archetype extra deck monster SR/UR. You could potentially go with only generics, but my preference would be archetypes that are still relatively playable as-is. I think Gishki may be alright as you still have a decent swath of rituals, especially the level 8s, and there's some other ritual support available like Manju.

No better time to craft 1-3 SRs for a deck than after an event that gives us all 6000 gems.

on another note, i think Blue-Eyes, Red-Eyes and Dark Magician might literally be unplayable because the vanillas are all UR. unless there are rare alternatives; i wouldn't know. maybe Exodia too since i'm not sure how many low rarity draw spells there are.

The Exodia pieces themselves are all UR, I think, so that's going to be an obstacle.

EDIT: No, I guess the big guy is only SR and the others aren't anything? I'm surprised.

I figured you were going to clarify this anyway in the signup thread, but were you going with the Synchro or earlier archetypes, or including the Xyz ones? I missed if you came to a conclusion there.

i don't think anybody stated a preference? i'm leaning just Synchro era right now because the list of archetypes is long enough even if some of them might actually be unplayable. though i do like a lot of the XYZ era archetypes more.

I'd like a chance to play one of the Xyz archetypes at some point (Shark), but I agree that for now we can stick to Synchro and earlier only, it should provide plenty of options.
