Or something tangentially related. I'm not being picky over the genre definition here. 3D (Control), rogue-likes (Dead Cells), sure, whatever. I'm just trying to decide on something to buy during the Steam sale and I seem to mostly be looking at metroidvania-like games, so rather than have the one other option SFF the field in a poll, I'm just going to ask open-ended.

My list of played games in the genre is not very long, but it does include HK and Ori 1. The most recent game I finished was Timespinner. Earlier this year I also played Ender Lilies and Deedlit. I'm open to any suggestions I can play on PC. (So, not Metroid Dread.)

Definitely Hades if you haven't played that. I've been playing Skul: The Hero Slayer this week and it's pretty fun but it's also hard AF. I consider myself pretty good at these games and I haven't beaten it once with 16 hours on record.

You should check out the "Indie Friends" bundle on the Dead Cells steam page

Dead Cells
Guacamelee 2 (another great game)
Curse of the Old Gods (haven't played but looks good)
Skul: The Hero Slayers (might lose interest after 25-30 hours)

Discounts if you already own some of the games and a bigger discount for the whole bundle. Would probably only be about $20 if you already have Dead Cells.

I just realized I posted a bunch of Roguelites instead of Metroidvanias lol

Top tier Metroidvanias:

Guacamelee 1+2
Blasphemous
Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom
Outland (cool take on the genre, very cheap $4)

Pretty good:
Shantae games
Chasm (map is procedurally generated but otherwise not really any roguelike elements)
Slain: Back from Hell

Dandara

Was surprised to see this first. Looks like an interesting game. I know little about it. Surprisingly few steam reviews. Are people just sleeping on this one?

La-Mulana

Guess I should have expected this. Y'know, I've never actually paid any attention to La-Mulana. I watched a bunch of "best metroidvanias" and nobody even mentioned this one. Would you start with the first one or jump right to 2?

PumpkinCoach posted...
Astalon: Tears of the Earth

I thought I hadn't heard of this one, but no, I just forgot the name of it. Looks like Legacy of the Wizard meets Mega Man, but with better visuals and (hopefully) mechanics.

I have played Hades. And I saw this bundle! I haven't played Dead Cells, actually, and was looking at both it and -- as a result of the bundle -- Guacamelee. The other two are probably good, too, but they don't appeal as strongly. Not sure what to make of Dead Cells, though. Looks more roguelike than metroidvania; sometimes that's good and sometimes it's not.

.

Not familiar with the Scooby game. I do have a PS2, but I'd probably have a hard time finding the game.

.

Edit: Oh, I skipped the Yoku's suggestion. Whoops. Pinball-vania sounds so weird. I'd love to know more about it.

I love both La-Mulana games but yeah if you don't like 1, you're not gonna like 2 either, and 1 is $12.50 cheaper. I think you get more out of 2 if you do play 1 first and like it anyway, and it's not going anywhere.

I want to recommend Rogue Legacy, but it is certainly a bit dated now. There is a Rogue Legacy 2 in early access, but I'm waiting for it to be more complete before I bite.

For a more pixel-y old school feel, you might like Environmental Station Alpha.

I think Dandara is a small dev indy game. I got it for free on the Epic Game Store at some point. I struggle to think of anything that plays quite like it. You basically jump between points along the walls to move, and there's a decent mix of action/bosses and "platforming" puzzles. It takes some getting used but the uniqueness of it makes it worth at least trying.

I didn't like La Mulana at all. I played for a few hours and found it to be inscrutable.

I literally just finished playing Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom a few weeks ago. It's fine enough but I wouldn't call it a "top tier" Metroidvania by any stretch. It's almost got too much going on with all the different forms and gear and doodads to collect.

This one's an oldie but a goodie: Aquaria

It doesn't have much in the way of platforming for a Metroidvania since most of it is underwater, but the combat and exploration are solid and it's a very cool setting with great atmosphere and lots of secrets. Story kinda sucks unfortunately, but it's not a big deal.

Another old one: Shadow Complex

It's a Super Metroid-style Metroidvania with some 3rd person shooter sensibilities. Setting and story are kinda crap but great gameplay and again, tons and tons of secrets.

In terms of newer games... which elements of metroidvanias do you like the most? Hard to make a recommendation without knowing that since something like Yoku is completely different from Monster Boy, etc.

I said loosely-related games were fine. Moot anyway, since I've played Hades.

Anyway, I decided there's no reason to be that miserly during the Steam sales event. I bought each of the games that were doubly-recommended and at least 30% off. (All but Astalon, which is very new, were at least 2/3 off.)

I'll keep a lot of these other suggestions on my wishlist. Kinda hoping the rumors of Silksong in February hold true, though.

nice, i was just about to expand on the rec and say it's specifically cool if you like the finding secrets and exploring a map aspect of metroidvanias.

another one i'd recommend is The Swapper, which is a puzzle platformer with a metroidvania structure, but rather than gain new abilities over time, new paths open up as the game pushes you to rethink how to use its core mechanic of creating and swapping into clones.

Speaking of puzzles, how to even play La-Mulana is one. I have no idea what anything does and I swear there must be a key I'm not using. I can't read signs. I can't open chests. I have these little pillars things in my way everywhere. There are these insignia things in a couple places that I can't interact with...I got into the ruins, for all the good it did me. I'm running around farming enemies on like a 20% drop rate for coins just to buy stuff at the shop.

Feels like I'm playing a C64-era game again, especially with the janky controls. I've suffered through quite a few incomprehensible games as a kid, to varying degrees of success, but man does this game seem daunting.
