propaganda is, by defintion, super biased and not necessarily in the public interest.

You don't know what the word means huh

Propaganda is the dissemination of informationfacts, arguments, rumours, half-truths, or liesto influence public opinion. Deliberateness and a relatively heavy emphasis on manipulation distinguish propaganda from casual conversation or the free and easy exchange of ideas.

That is exactly what it is. Dissemination of information to deliberately manipulate people

I'd rather have a muppet saying something that supports the information provided by scientists and medical professionals as opposed to "news" sources that cast doubt on science and spread fear and misinformation about the same thing.

One of them is saving lives.

The other is actually causing more people to die.

IDGAF if you want to label it propaganda, even if I don't think that's an accurate term.

Technically PSAs are by definition propaganda. The term just is overwhelming only used in a negative context.

So Plum's usage may be dictionary correct, but you would only use it that way to spark pointless debate.

Edit: only for the propaganda part, I mean

It's disingenuous to ignore the connotations that certain words have. Big Bird telling people to get vaccinated might or might not fit the dictionary definition of propaganda, but either way the term propaganda is ONLY ever used in a negative way. And frankly speaking, it's irresponsible to attach a term as loaded as Propaganda to a PSA about telling people to get vaccinated.

I think we're basically saying the same thing, except you are more optimistic on the nature of people than I am. I think that, no matter what the dems do, they lose here just because of the stupid nature of politics in the US and Americans in general. I agree it is a tactical failure, but not in the sense that it is causing them to lose seats which I think is inevitable just based on the cyclical nature of US politics. The tactical failure is not doing the greatest good they can because, no matter what they do, they're going to lose seats so they might as well do whatever they want.

Yeah I'd say I'm less optimistic about people and more about democracy in a broad sense? In a specific sense hell no, I have little faith in the future of US democracy. But that's largely because Dems suck. From my perspective if you truly believe there's nothing Dems can do to avoid losing, democracy is already dead. I don't think we are there yet, and I think some things can still be saved, but the Democratic Party's refusal to do so and other tactical failures are just slowing the bleeding. We'll get there soon though.

Basically, if it's true that people are selfish then it's utterly laughable how bad the Dems are at utilizing that for their own gain.

Rittenhouse Trial done for the day

This should never have gone to trial.

They ruled that they could ask Grossguertz about that exchange but he denied everything, continued to deny everything, and the Defense just continued to shred any credibility he had before straight up asking him, "So you agree that Kyle Rittenhouse did not fire at you until after you put your arms down, advanced on him, and put a gun to his head?" And Grossguertz agreed. That should be it. This should be over. Completely asinine.

They had a woman with a very unfortunate cadence speaking for ballistics that proved... Kyle shot the gun. No point.

Another officer came up and then was just the most incompetent fucker, who outright said Kyle wasn't a threat and he just maced him to go away. And he continues to say he couldn't hear Kyle, but he thought he said someone was shot, but also said he wasn't listening to his orders. Our police officers, ladies and gentlemen.

They brought on another reporter who outright said Kyle and his group weren't threatening at all and that Kyle didn't rush to any danger and he just asked people for medical help. I cannot believe the prosecution brought this guy on. They wanted him to say militia but he just... didn't.

And then they brought on the detective who lord in heaven if you ever have a detective like this investigating something you should feel bad. It felt like an SNL skit where it was shady for the testimony and then on cross he just made him look like a complete imbecile, and they admitted to filing a complaint before they completed investigation, and he didn't look at any video footage on a computer he just said he watched it on his phone, and they purposefully went out of their way to not get Grossgaertz's phone, even though they knew he was recording it and they thought his statement didn't line up with what was said. And then walked him through everything like "Okay, so you clearly see that Kyle wasn't chasing anyone, right?" And pointing out that everyone else had attacked him, to just show they never should have filed this case. Suddenly the Prosecutor was very interested in objecting when it was his department's investigation coming into question.

This is an indictment of the police system at this point. They fucked up so hard so many times and their investigation was so shady. They didn't have enough to make a case but still did.

  1. I think there's been scientific studies that show Democratic voters are not susceptible to propaganda in the same way that Republican voters are. If it was possible to build a highly effective propaganda machine, it would exist and would have worked by now (for example, the failed left-wing talk radio stations.)
  2. I think the problem is that there are two elections that Democrats need to worry about at any point. Yes, it sucks that when it comes to general elections, Dems messaging sucks and is uninspiring. However, in the primary, the majority of voters want the lie that the Democrats are going work with the Republicans (because the GOP ISN'T some suicidal cult that hates everything the Dems stand for) and be bipartisan and fair and moderate to get things done. The majority of Democratic voters want the party to NOT be the left-wing equivalent of the GOP. They don't want an extreme swing to the left, and they want to believe (misguidedly) that GOP voters are decent people at heart, and shouldn't be completely shut out of political discussions (in part because they don't like it when the GOP takes control and does exactly that to the Democrats).

Ok, but these points just lead me back to what I don't understand about the defeatist mindset.

If the goal is to stop the GOP from attaining power, but Dems can't win by playing fair OR playing dirty, what's the point of the party? What value are we assigning to Democrats and democracy this way?

Maybe this comes across as cynical, but Democrats merely being corrupt and incompetent is less depressing to me than them being helplessly doomed.

If we're being entirely fair, this isn't true.

Well, okay when Biden said it it absolutely had no basis to justify saying it, but this is something that Biden has actually, genuinely delivered on... kinda?

Infrastructure has been something that presidential administrations and Congresses have been saying they want to do for decades now. It became a running joke during the Trump administration and they had bigger majorities during his trifecta and he, as well as all the others before him, completely failed to get it done. Biden actually got a $1.2t bill passed, through regular order, with GOP votes in both chambers.

Now, I will qualify this that I think I speak for everyone in this topic when I say the package did not go far enough and that securing those GOP votes required cutting out a lot of things the left would have wanted by going the two bill route/splitting it off into the reconciliation bill which is in genuine peril at the moment as well as a prop to hold up by those who want to preserve the filibuster and halt any meaningful progress by saying "Hey look, the Senate still works!" and so this accomplishment was kind of a cursed monkey's paw in that sense but objectively speaking BIF would be a topline achievement for basically any administration in the past few decades, even gutted as it was.

1. I think there's been scientific studies that show Democratic voters are not susceptible to propaganda in the same way that Republican voters are.

I'll do you one better: left-wing and right-wing brains literally function differently.

https://www.healthline.com/health-news/liberals-and-conservatives-assess-risk-differently-021313

https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/conservative-and-liberal-brains-might-have-some-real-differences/

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3572122/

The takeaways:

Liberals show a higher level of activity in the left insula, a portion of the brain associated with self-awareness, social cues, addiction, emotional processing, empathy, and even orgasms.

Conservatives, on the other hand, tend to weigh risk in the right amygdala, an area of the brain that aids in survival, including reacting to violations of personal space and controlling social interaction, fear, and aggression.

On the whole, the research shows, conservatives desire security, predictability and authority more than liberals do, and liberals are more comfortable with novelty, nuance and complexity.

This data provides evidence that Democrats and Republicans use different cognitive processes when they think about risk. In fact, the researchers say that the brain activity in these two regions alone could predict whether a person is a Democrat or a Republican with 82.9 percent accuracy more accurate than using a model based on the political affiliations of an individuals parents, which is only accurate about 69.5 percent of the time.

Propaganda will never work the same way it does on left-leaning people as it does on right-leaning people. The capacity to get worked into a frenzy by any random piece of news is predominantly a right-wing trait.

lol and we get that double in california because republicans are saying "california democrats want to charge you per mile now too!"

And they (republicans) are eating that crap up.

They don't any of them realize that the current (very early test phase pilot program) to rollout a per mile tax on vehicle usage would be instead of the tax on gas if it makes it to full adoption and not in addition to them. And that this will actually BENEFIT people who drive more if it's set correctly because currently their gas fees aren't in the best place because they are subsidizing drivers with hybrid and electric cars who are causing just as much wear on the roads without the corresponding fee for road maintenance.

But why bother to learn any of that when you can just be ignorantly upset instead.

Boy it's almost as if the left wanted to put together universal daycare programs so parents don't HAVE to choose between potentially killing their kids and going bankrupt.

But yeah, study after study shows that people do not vote on policy. If policy matter, like I said before poor urban black people and poor rural white people would be voting the exact same way.

Basically, people want universal Healthcare but only if a Republican puts it in place.

If school is like daycare, we should start paying teachers like babysitters.

Let's say the going rate is $10/kid per hour (If you find a babysitter willing to do it for less, you probably shouldn't trust them with your kid. And good luck finding daycare that cheap!)
Each teacher has at least 16 students (That's a low ball number)
Let's say they teach 6 hours a day
180 days a year (or so)

So $172k/year sounds about right!
