The latter was my first thought but the former works too.

If a country had 5 golds, no silvers, no bronzes, and another country had 0 Golds but 10 silvers and 10 bronzes, country #2 needs to be recognized as more dominant. Having a gold medal is great for an individual, but when looking at teams, total medal count often tells the true story

Golds only is silly since you could end up with a one country having 6 golds and nothing else, and another country having 5 golds, 12 silvers, and 14 bronzes, and pretty much nobody should argue the first country is better.

I mean, if we're going to say who "won" the Olympics, it shouldn't be simply who has the best swim team. If the Olympics is 40% swimming medals and 60% other sports, that's a little unfair. I do find it a little funny that some swimmer can swim two lengths of a pool in under a minute, wait half a day for the next swim-two-lengths race and have another crack at it, while some people play in a tournament that spans literally the entire length of the Olympics just for a single chance at a medal...which could be hijacked by a single mistake by a teammate.

IMO there's far too much of a weight placed on the medal table and which country 'wins' etc, I like to view the Olympics in terms of the people succeeding rather than the countries they're from. I think it'd be much better if we were encouraged to celebrate the best athletes from all over the world and create more of a community vibe breaking cultural barriers etc, rather than it being just another exercise in nationalism.

And it'll always be USA, China etc at the top of the tables as they have the most people and most money, where's the fun in seeing rich countries dominate things.

Also agree with everything azuarc says, the medal table is ridiculously weighted towards certain sports, most obviously swimming.

That said, I'd choose gold over medal count easily. Medal count makes it much more of a 'who has the most athletes' award, at least with golds smaller countries can get more of a shot and it's truly defining the best in the world.

And if we're talking about cutting sports, Horse Dancing needs to go before anything else.

Precisely. Swimming should be cut down to freestyle at 4 or so different lengths, like track running is.

That's also cheating. If you are like the most dominate athlete ever in something, like a Bolt or a Phelps you transcend the Olympics itself. You are THE runner. THE swimmer.

Well, I think it's a bit different for sports that matter outside the Olympics, like boxing. Being the heavyweight champ is more important than being a gold medalist boxer.

Same thing for something like basketball. Carmelo Anthony has won gold medals for Team USA, but it's barely a factor for most people when judging how good he has been as a player.
