You know what? I've changed my mind. The LotR films do suck. Mainly because they didn't include this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdXQJS3Yv0Y

Put that scene in Return of the King and it would be the greatest movie ever made. It would have won ALL the Oscars.

Ahh, Celeborn. Poor bastard doesn't even get his own Wikipedia entry (it defaults to Galadriel's page).

Tolkien describes him as one of the most wise and powerful elves left in Middle Earth in the Third Age. You'd think he'd be important. But his wife outshines him so much in narrative purpose that he barely exists.

Tolkien does have a tendency to really talk up the Noldor while minimizing all the others, though. And Galadriel gets bonus points for being one of the Noldor who came from Valinor (Elrond wasn't born until thousands of years later in Beleriand).

Legolas might be the only non-Noldor who gets any meaningful attention, other than maybe Thingol and his daughter (though she's basically also half-goddess).

I mean, I'm not going to lie, I hate the movies. The first one is the only one I can stand to watch, and even then only pieces of it. Cinematography and music was quite good, CGI has mostly held up, but I think the movies really, really fucked with many of the characters and made changes that did not jive with the themes. It's hard to look past an adaptation that just outright butchers all your favorite characters, especially when LotR has particular significance for my family; my grandfather taught classes on it, he and my mom went together to buy The Silmarillion together when it came out, my oldest memory is of me quoting The Two Towers and making my mom laugh, etc, etc...

As of today my favorite adaptation of the LotR is the BBC audio drama (from what I understand the kindle version is missing parts? Lame...), the one where Ian Holm played Frodo and Robert Stephens played Aragorn (bro had the voice of a god, he died too young).

I like the books better. I felt the movies were rushed, and didn't do a good job of introductions. They also insulted several characters, especially hobbits and dwarves. There was a lack of wisdom throughout the movies, and they tended to diminish positive aspects and exaggerate the negative ones.

The only thing I don't particularly like with the movies is how much of a wuss Frodo is.

I mean yeah he carries the ring but he literally can't fight for shit.

Every time he gets into a fight he just drops the sword and falls to the ground.

Still great movies.

If you know how to read then that's easy. Unless you mean time wise.

The main problem with the books is that Tolkien is an epic storyteller, but he isn't actually a very good writer. Which is really only exacerbated by the fact that Tolkien's main interest isn't really the story itself, but the myth structure and the languages he's constructing (even he admitted he mostly came up with the idea of Middle Earth in the first place to have a place where people would be able to speak Quenya and Khuzdul and the other dozen or so languages he came up with).

So the books can come across as very dry and/or stilted in places, and there are definitely parts where most people are going to just go "Ugh, skip ahead until something interesting happens."

The movies actually do a pretty good job of distilling what was important in the story down to a more digestible form. They're probably the only movies I've ever watched after reading the books and went "I might actually like those better."

For me it would be timewise. I use to be a very fast reader when I was younger but I think it went away when I stopped reading. I can still read decently fast just not as fast as I could.

I disagree.

I appreciated that the entire book was in those movies, as well as extra world building and events alluded to in later works (such as driving Sauron out of Dol Guldur). AND all those songs

Some of the actions scenes couldve been trimmed a bit (I still hate the chase on the way to Rivendell, for example), but overall Im very happy with how the Hobbit movies came out and I still believe they wouldve been better received if they came out in 04, 05, and 06.

Plus, lets not pretend like the LotR movies dont have their faults in terms of adapting the books
