If you know how to read then that's easy. Unless you mean time wise.

The main problem with the books is that Tolkien is an epic storyteller, but he isn't actually a very good writer. Which is really only exacerbated by the fact that Tolkien's main interest isn't really the story itself, but the myth structure and the languages he's constructing (even he admitted he mostly came up with the idea of Middle Earth in the first place to have a place where people would be able to speak Quenya and Khuzdul and the other dozen or so languages he came up with).

So the books can come across as very dry and/or stilted in places, and there are definitely parts where most people are going to just go "Ugh, skip ahead until something interesting happens."

The movies actually do a pretty good job of distilling what was important in the story down to a more digestible form. They're probably the only movies I've ever watched after reading the books and went "I might actually like those better."

Ah this movie.

Despite how odd it is, I do really love the overall look / ambience of the movie. Its still what I picture in my head while Im listening to the BBC radio show.

I absolutely loved it as a kid. I can probably still quote it word-for-word now.
