Man I really don't want to judge based in the trailer because I was excited for this, but the animation here is not doing it for me. I'm not necessarily anti-rotoscoping because I've seen it done pretty well but it just feels lacking in personality despite being very colorful.

Also Killmonger and Tony is a real thinker and maybe the last two MCU characters I would think of teaming up. And uh, as a dedicated Tony hater I don't mean that in a fun way.

After this episode, I do think it's funny how Falcon and the Winter Soldier was the most basic of all three shows but also the only one that didn't have a clear pure evil bad guy.

Black Widow non spoiler review - It was fine

I'm not a comic person and just generally read some quick little wikipedia info on characters I only vaguely recognize, so I'm not upset with who Taskmaster is because I only know him from stuff like MvC. With that said I think the film worked best in the first half with just non stop spy/action scenes. I got a little bored once they all met up and got to the red room, and the action scenes kind of took a dip as well as it got very over the top and was clearly going for the normal MCU ramp up the stakes astronomically high. I think it would have worked better going for more of the Jason Bourne route of a low stakes spy thriller but maybe I shouldn't be expecting anything like that.

anyway just got back from the movie

Red guardian isn't the hero we need but he is the hero we deserve

Overall It was hard to care what happened to black widow since we know what her ultimate fate is anyway, but I enjoy the story for what it was. A lot of the humor was pretty good.

But they did a decent of job endearing me to Yelena going forward which I am assuming is for the Hawkeye Disney+ series

also they say the original May 2020 release date got push backed due to covid and that's probably true, but I also can't help but feel it could have also been in part because the main villain dies in a helicopter explosion and May 2020 was still kinda close to Kobe's death and it maybe could have been seen as insensitive?|

I watched Black Widow. It was... fine? Like, it was inoffensive and I don't regret it, but I also feel like I could have done anything else with my time and had just as much enjoyment. About the only thing that perked me up was Julia Dreyfus in the post-credits scene. After FatWS it's now abundantly clear they're building towards some sort of Thunderbolts or Dark Avengers movie, which I will see just for even more Julia Dreyfus.

I don't even think Black Widow was fine. Tonally it feels way off from what the MCU has been doing for a long time. It feels like the very serious, maybe an occasional joke kind of tone of the first two Thor movies and at this point it's been 4 years since Ragnarok proved that's not what MCU movies should be like. Hell, it's been 7 years since GotG proved that's not what MCU movies should be like. Black Widow would have been fine, but ultimately forgettable, if the MCU train didn't come to a screeching halt during the pandemic. Since it did, however, someone should have stopped to say "this isn't the movie MCU fans want to come back to."

i wouldn't agree that every MCU movie needs to be a jokefest now. infinity war was very serious and that was a great movie.

marvel can do serious fine, it sounds like black widow just missed the mark (haven't seen it yet).

Also both of the movies I mentioned, Thor Ragnarok and Guardians of the Galaxy, are serious movies. One of them threatens the destruction of an entire world and the other actually delivers on that threat. The problem with Black Widow is the tone doesn't match with what the MCU is doing now, it doesn't match with the successful MCU movies. It's as much a mismatch in tone with Infinity War as it is with Ragnarok or GotG. It feels like the kind of movie Marvel Studios stopped making because they aren't as fun and memorable. It's like they took a hypothetical script for Atomic Blond 2 and crammed recognizable elements of the MCU into it. Now, I liked Atomic Blond for what it was, but it wasn't an MCU movie and shouldn't be made into one.

Black Widow just does not feel like an MCU movie.

I remember Infinity War as having a ton of jokes in it. Although that may be because it was a ton of a movie in general. I guess percentage wise it was less joke-heavy than other MCU films

Winter Soldier is one of the best MCU movies and also has a fairly serious tone so I don't see the problem here. I'm not gonna see Black Widow until it drops the additional fee so it could suck for other reasons, but I don't think blaming tone for "fitting in" is it. Most of the best Marvel movies deviate from the standard template!

You're missing the point if you're just clutching on to joke density. The jokes in MCU movies tend to work as punctuation marks, a chance to break things up - to catch your breath. Outside of the opening scene and the scene from the trailers where the "family" is reunited this movie does not breathe. It is mostly one relentless action scene after another stitched together with dourness. There's no fun, and no chance for a moment in the film to be allowed to be memorable.

Comparing it to Winter Soldier isn't totally off. But Winter Soldier gave you certain set pieces and let you take them in in ways Black Widow does not. When watching Black Widow I think there may have been some cool action set pieces in there but I can't remember because before I had the chance to form any lasting cool moments in my mind they were already trying to do something else... either yet another action scene or a scene of just plain emotional trauma. This movie practically makes Winter Soldier look like rainbows and puppy dogs in comparison.
