Turns out the true what-if was that there was currently a queen of England which in turn inspired Peggy to stay in the room

Mostly because it's a terrible line queen or not, with terrible delivery. And then after that I thought about the historical inaccuracy

I remember everyone complaining about a "pop singer" voicing Aeris, and then she ends up outperforming the actual professional actress.

While I suspect this isn't what they were referring to, you all do know that QE2's mother was still alive during WWII right (she actually didn't die until like, 20 years ago)? England absolutely had a Queen, she just obviously wasn't the regent.

Bad comics news, in case anyone here reads X-Men:

https://ew.com/books/inferno-jonathan-hickman-last-x-men-comic/

I don't know if anyone else here was reading this, but long story short: X-Men comics sucked for a long time. Marvel got one of their best writers - who had crafted long high-concept critically acclaimed arcs for Avengers and Fantastic Four - to revive the brand. It worked. He came out with the best X-Men comics in decades. He confirms in the interview that he had broad plans for a three-arc storyline. Marvel pairs him with a bunch of (hack) writers to capitalize on the event. Marvel decides to stay in "the first arc" and the good writer (Hickman) leaves.

I'm gutted

Only in that the restructuring of Marvel since Disney's purchase has seen the publishing division falling under executives who are also established in the other side of Marvel development - like Dan Buckley. I think readers have seen a shift from the more tried-and-true serialized story system to an IP generating farm system for potentially sellable products outside of the comic market. While that doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing, it's been my experience that having an eye on what comes after the comics often leaves the comics in the dust.

Even without tracing the executive lineage, it's just very clear when the comics industry goes for "brand synergy." It starts with tie-ins but you also see the official universes shift to match other media. And as Scarlet says, you get the sense of it being a content farm. When the Civil War movie came out, they did a Civil War 2 storyline to double dip. There's also stuff like, there was a period of time where Marvel de-emphasized X-Men and canceled the Fantastic Four ongoing, and it was suspected (and later confirmed) that this was because of the dispute with Fox over the movie rights.

This isn't even getting into the fact that the writers and artists making the stuff getting farmed into movies do not own the shit and do not get paid adequately for it. But it's related in that it makes the career path to do your time and then get promoted into the executive role to oversee all this, I can point to dudes like Geoff Johns at DC/WB as an example, unsure about Marvel.

Marvel Comics losing talent over "creative differences" is nothing new. The upside is that they have the ability to attract most of the new talent that comes into the business by the simple fact that they're Marvel. I'm sure they'll get some really good talent on the X-Men in like 5 years or so, about the time when they might actually have room in their lineup for X-Men movies.

Talent being "replacable" is the entire problem and not an "upside" but, yeah, you are exactly correct about what it means for the future of Marvel and the MCU. Not to mention they don't necessarily NEED new talent since they have decades of stories to mine.

Also I really wouldn't say that Marvel has done a good job finding new talent vis a vis their comics: I would say that most of them are in pretty bad spots right now in terms of creative and commercial acclaim. Hickman on X-Men was their really only golden goose right now.

What If...? episode 2 was pretty freakin' awesome. Maybe it's because I really enjoyed the setting of the Guardians movies that seeing the characters in different, expanded roles was really great. It was also just kind of a fun story.

The greatest part though was seeing Thanos as a good guy Ravager. Just so bizarre, I loved it.

The X-Men line languished for a good ten years after the last big name departure. And while it's true that Marvel and DC can pull in new talent with ease, the market continues to dwindle and the focus continues to lay in capitalizing on new characters and storylines through film and television. Marvel continuously trading Mark Waid and Brian Bendis-types back and forth for the last ten years or so has done very little to inject new interest into comics. Yes, there are outliers, but the market continues to stagnate and decrease in overall readership because what had worked in the past is eschewed in favor of, like Hero said, brand synergy.

True but people were talking about *Captain Marvel* more a month after its release. And not just negatively. Could arguably be because the MCU was riding momentum from Infinity War, but still.
