This.

I really fucking hate the name, and they actually put it in the official title for the holiday. I also agree it should be called "Emancipation Day" or something instead of having a 2nd "Independence" day. But that's still a really pathetic excuse to vote against making it a holiday. Just file a new bill to change the name to something less idiotic...

I think you are thinking of the Tulsa race massacre, which I also learned about from the Watchmen tv show (sadly enough). Juneteenth is a different thing, the date where slaves in Texas learned they had been emancipated, something like 2 years after the official emancipation. It has been a bit of a big deal in Texas for awhile so I knew about it. Glad they made an official holiday for it.

Yes. Shameful that they would vote against this.

The name "Juneteenth" holds significance as a cultural reference, a piece of history. Saying that it's a stupid name and they should change it is feeding into the white patriarchal power structure which seeks to maintain control over minorities. Anyone saying the name should be changed is being racist.

When looking at my school district's calendar earlier this school year, I was absolutely shocked that they had June 19th listed as a holiday. We normally get out of school before mid to late June, but still, the fact that they acknowledged the holiday was very surprising to me.

We do have that one holiday a few Americans obsessed about, leading into an entire movement that is about one step away from going full terrorist...

Aside from that one, our holidays are either common international, common Christian, or both.

The name being weird and what it actually entails are two different things. Annually officially remembering the abolition of slavery, as a reminder that while people have a right to freedom, it can easily be lost, is a good thing.

Generally, they're the sort of people that never do enough work for a formal holiday to make much difference for them, but they know that the people working under them could spend that day being productive instead, so they don't like it.

People against more holidays tend to either 1) be against the lowly commoners having any free time or fun, or 2) are against paying more to said commoners for any reason. I'd love to have some sort of data to back this up, but I think it's an acceptable take on what the deal is.

I had heard of the name in passing over the years (probably just within the last five years and from sources trying to make it a holiday) but had no fucking clue what it meant and wouldn't have connected it to the event.

What_The_Chris posted...

First, because we have an absurd number of holidays. Second, holidays disrupt everyday life and it's just one more thing to have to schedule around. And honestly, a lot of federal holidays don't seem to apply to everybody anyway. It's just another day when overpaid government employees are able to take a day off when they already don't work enough for what we're paying them.

For me, it depends when it is, lol
We have so many fucking holidays in the winter when it's miserable and crappy outside.
But, until today, if our founders hadn't declared independence on July 4th, we'd have no holidays at all between Memorial and Labor Day.
We need more summer holidays, damn it! something around early August would be ideal. This June 19th one is good, too. Little close to July 4th, but whatever.

its the day that slaves in Texas and surrounding areas found out they were free, a couple years after they were actually free legally
