Metroid Dread looks less impressive than the first Metroid Prime released almost 20 years ago on the GameCube.
Well see, maybe its really fun and stays true to the Metroid formula with the thick atmosphere and otherworldly environments, unique soundtrack, epic bosses and lots of exploration. Technically however, it does indeed look like a mobile game and aesthetically it looks like Overwatch.
Hopefully Metroid Prime 4 will be the next real graphical step unless Nintendo has already decided to consign yet another franchise to the cartoon bin.

Don't like the art style (honestly I'd rather have pixel art), don't like the music, don't like the preview's focus on the cinematic. Solid meh so far. And Nintendo has been mostly fucking up the series since Super so I don't have high hopes.

Graphically I think it's very ugly. However, I'm optimistic about the gameplay.

Nostalgia goggles. I love the old 2D metroids but the prime games were great. Also, what they showed of the new metroid didn't really impress me much. Looked decent enough but meh. Came across as a placeholder to try and placate people waiting on prime 4. Nintendo knows they can just always ride a wave of nostalgia, though, from people who grew up playing these games on NES and SNES

From what I heard after listening to the developers talk about this, they had an idea for a Metroid game like this back in 2003. They could not at the time make the game in the style and mechanics they wanted based on the technology of the time.

So it sat on the shelves for a long time then recently they dusted it off and here we have it. Probably why it's a direct sequel to Metroid Fusion, since that is the furthest game in the Metroid timeline and this would have come after that.

So even more amazing is this is the first game to advance the Metroid story into future events since 2002 when Metroid Fusion came out. The events of every Metroid game that has come out since Fusion has taken place before the events of Fusion.

As much as I loved the 3DS Metroid 2 remake, they completely missed the central point of the original Metroid 2 for the Gameboy.

The original game had this claustrophobic atmosphere and you always felt this extreme isolation because you were completely alone on a planet filled with hostile wildlife and the very dangerous Metroids.

And as you went deeper into the planet, the wildlife started to diminish.
At the bottom, there was pretty much only the Metroids left as if they've exterminated everything else.

And Mercury Steam completely missed this aspect of the game and introduced even more enemies throughout the entire game.

I mean the end of the original Gameboy game was similar, as you get closer to the final boss the enemy count is reduced and you face mostly Metroids. Shit many of the other games end that way also, in Super Metroid once you unlock the final area where Mother Brain resides you face mostly Metroid enemies.

Samus has a main goal of eliminating Mother Brain in the earlier games, but her other goal has always been to completely eliminate the Metroid species since it's far too dangerous to exist.

It'd be nice if Samus was like 45 in the game... there's not enough cool older women in games.

There's, like, ONE.

in Super Metroid once you unlock the final area where Mother Brain resides you face mostly Metroid enemies

in the space pirate facility, there are mostly metroids because the space pirates have them and are experimenting with them

but in the deep deep areas of the planet, there are still non-metroid enemies and they are extremely resilient, being invulnerable to most weapons (but then shown to be vulnerable to metroids just like any living thing is)

I like it. Like with Mario, I prefer 2D Metroid games.

Little more cutscene-y than I'd prefer though, at least from what the (a?) trailer showed.

Metroid prime: 7.15 millions units sold

In other words, it would take more than 5 super metroids to equal the sales of the 3 prime games

A first person shooter outselling a back-then extremely niche 2D exploration game?
