...does anybody here still play and/or collect?

my interest was piqued again recently a couple days ago after quitting in 2014. it's gotten a lot crazier since then so i'm more interested in the collecting aspect right now and trying to finish filling out my binder. but i'm not totally against relearning how to play somewhere down the line.

Funny thing. I don't collect or play. But I did buy a lot of random card packs a few years ago. One was Yugioh which I finally got around to opening it just a couple days ago.

"Hidden Summoners" it was called.
It's really strange to me that the pack only had 5 cards in it and every one of them was foil...is this normal?

Also, I lucked out and got 2 of the top 4 most expensive cards in the set and 1 other one that was in the top 10.

The cards are very different from MTG, so that was neat to see.

i'm not familiar with that specific set but it is not a 'regular' one since there's only 60 cards in the set and literally all 60 of them are foil.

i'm not sure if this kind of smaller set became more common during the time i quit but the last time i actually bought a booster (2014) it was the standard 9 in a pack with around 100 in the set list.

Yeah 5 per pack is standard for Japan, Pokemon too

i don't know how i didn't hear about this the whole time but the classic sets have been reprinted as recently as 2017. this is super fucking annoying only because they use the SAME set identifier as the original which means you have to check for other subtleties for unlimiteds if buying singles.

unlimiteds truly are trash

fucking hell

I play duel links off and on, I'm in an off phase right now but I keep meaning to boot it up. I've got a nice buster blader deck in there, and a couple other rogue decks.

Part of the shine off duel links is gone though because I was invested due to no stuff like synchros or XYZs when it first released but those are in there now, so I'm sure eventually they'll get to link monsters and such. But I'm sure I'll get back to it at some point.

Also, I highly recommend a youtube channel called TheDuelLogs. He does top 10 lists and is very interesting to watch imo, he's been doing it for several years and they're just really well done with good information, pleasing aesthetics, etc.

I went undefeated in the swiss rounds at Canadian Nationals in 2009, wrote for Konami's strategy site for a couple years a few years later... but since Pendulums came out I fell out of the game and just haven't been able to get back into it. Every time I try I face a deck that does 30 plays on turn 1 and I have to read a novel on every card and I just get overwhelmed and put the game down again.

Frustrating because I have so many great memories in the game.

I went through my old collection recently just to see if anything was worth anything. Notable stuff includes a first edition Black Skull Dragon, first edition Thousand Eyes Restrict, and the special edition tin promos of Blue Eyes, Dark Magician, and Red Eyes.

Nothing worth crazy crazy money, but it was nice to catalog.

I also recommend.

I haven't played in forever, and have no intention of playing again, but I still watch his videos.

do you guys think it is worth it to double sleeve (either with inner/outer or mini/standard size) in a binder for long term storage?

i never bothered double sleeving anything back then but i'm more paranoid now i guess. i have a Monster binder from back then and now that i see how the inner columns stick out i'm not happy. i've also heard that when you fully fill those out, they can damage the cards too so i'm moving them.

or should i just say fuck it and move them to toploaders instead

I actually just started playing at locals pretty recently. It's been fun, because most of the people are super nice, but the current meta game is really busted. There's people at my locals that bring decks that are worth about 800 dollars and are damn near unstoppable unless you invest similar amounts of money.

That said the more casually inclined players have been really fun and it's always a treat seeing the different kinds of decks.

I can vouch for this as well. Team APS is really fun too. Especially since a lot of their videos focus on older cards and playstyles.

Yeah this is another part of why I stopped duel links for a while, because I just highly disagree with the route all YGO seems to be taking in how the game revolves around how much you can special summon in a turn and get your board set up and protected before the opponent can react. Going off of duellogs vids, it just sounds like it's about who can play their own game first before the opponent can respond, and I personally think an ideal card game is one where both sides have to have some kind of interaction in order to win. Basically what MikeTavish said as well, about jsut comboing half your deck in a turn.

It feels like YGO has been this for ages. All the good archetypes just vomit creatures out of your deck until you win, and there isn't a different enough feel between them. That's what I remember anyway, I haven't played for a while. Not since before Pendulum Summoning.

I actually don't mind all the Special Summoning, I thought it'd be an issue, but there's plenty of checks to really stop someone from going crazy with it. Actually I think Pendulum's are considered super bad right now anyway. I haven't seen a single person use one yet.

My issue is the negates. So much of the game now is just stopping your opponent from playing the game. One I hate in particular is Red Eyes Dark Dragoon. He can't be destroyed by Spells, Traps or Effects. Nor can he be targeted by them, plus he can auto destroy 2 monsters, plus he can cancel other monster effects while gaining attack. Oh and he's super easy to bring out. To top it all off, he's an 80 dollar card.
