I want a senator who will actually work for the people.

You're acting like we have to be completely happy with either shitty choice. Nobody said they'd prefer Mitch McConnell.

The following states currently have GOP senators elected by closer margins than Collins won by in Maine last year:

North Carolina (2020, 2016)
Iowa (2020)
Florida (2018, 2016)
Indiana (2018)
Texas (2018)
Missouri (2018, 2016)
Pennsylvania (2016)
Wisconsin (2016)

But somehow everything is Maine's fault, not any of these states and especially not other states where Democrats aren't anywhere close to competitive.

i was gonna add Pat Toomey and ESPECIALLY Ron Johnson (who was polling at 1% against Berniecrat Russ Feingold going into Election Day), but then Gamefaqs crapped out on me and I didnt realize my post went through. I also forgot losing a seat in Indiana in 2018.

Also, the reason Mains catches crap is because unlike all of those others (including Toomey and Johnson), Maine went solidly blue at the state level, yet the Senate had nearly a 100% swing in favor of the Republican candidate. In fact, aside from Toomey and Johnson (who were elected on the back of Trump in 2015) Susan Collins is the only other blue state Republican left in the Senate. She SHOULD have been the easiest pick-up in 2020, yet the voters didnt want her opponent.

People forget that Maine has ranked choice voting. We don't know what was on the second ballot but my guess is that that race was much closer than it looked from the top choice numbers.

Nope! I was trying to warn people when they were flexing that there was a bisexual woman taking Flakes old seat. She specifically listed Manchin as her inspiration when she was back in the house and she had the third highest Trump score of any democrat house member. This 100% isnt a surprise. I've also had time to think about it and calm down a bit

$300 for an extra month minus taxes is actually more money than the $400. Obviously it's not as good as $400 no taxes, but I have to accept that was never the initial plan and so I can't fairly be mad it's not a thing.

So I'll accept this as long as Manchin doesn't fuck it up. I'm still not happy with all of the backing down, but the math suggests this doesn't actually screw me so whatever.

I'll take the ignorance L. Hopefully, Mark Kelly can get reelected in two years by being decent, which would make me more optimistic that someone like Sinema CAN get primary in a state turning more blue.

Agreed. By that point, most of the country will be vaccinated, and I presume things will resemble "normalcy" much more than they do now, at least for the wealthy and suburban white-collar workers. There just won't be as much of an appetite for another stimulus, even if working class renters are still getting just as fucked.

Just remember that as maddening as Joe Manchin is (and he most definitely sucks), West Virginia should realistically be sending us a Tommy Tuberville level Republican who not only wouldn't vote for any stimulus, but would likely make his 15th call for an investigation into Hunter Biden's laptop.

As for why "fuck Maine" above all else, it's because of the ridiculous discrepancy between how much Biden won by vs. How much Collins won by. They basically said "we're cool with voting for Biden but we also hate functioning government."

Maine has an independent streak? More like Maine has a stupid idiot streak.

Anyway from what I saw a lot of people are mad it didn't pass and...well, why?
I am not an economics expert but neither are the majority of the people on the Internet. Raising the minimum wage will have consequences. Not only the US but globally as well considering how important the USD is. You do not want to cause inflation.

There are both positive and negative sides to this. It's isn't so simple. 84% of the democrats voting in favor is dumb. 0% of Republicans voting against is even worse. This isn't supposed to be a Democrats vs Republicans kind of thing.

Afaik the inflationary effects of the minimum wage increase are not expected to be particularly large. The main concern with raising it too high is increased unemployment.

The $300 for an extra month vs $400 does end up screwing anyone whose unemployment ends the month before the added month, but otherwise is mostly an optics issue. The worst thing is 8 senators voting against the minimum wage increase, and I'm sorry, using the parlementarian as your reason just means you don't want a $15 minimum wage. It isn't happening otherwise.

Edit: Like just imagine republican senators denying something they want because of a norm, not even a rule. They absolutely cannot use that excuse. I'm counting all 8 as against the 15 minimum wage from this point on.

Their votes. For example, let's say you have a bill for sending out $1200 checks. The GOP wants zero dollar checks and votes no. They don't have the votes to pass the bill without progressives votes, so they could demand $1400 checks. This is just a theoretical example.

Now, if the counter argument is that the centrists would rather get a few GOP votes for $400 checks than work with progressives for $1400 checks, then you have a clear case for why we would need a third party.

They could try creating a third party, which obviously wouldn't be very successful but could siphon off enough votes to cripple the Democrats. That's basically what the old southern Democrats used to do to force the national party to support their views, though considering progressives don't have anywhere near as much power I doubt it would work as well. (Also, the chance of throwing the election to the other party would hurt progressives a lot more.)
