I know this paints me in an ignorant light, but I've never even heard of a Senate Parlaimentarian before the past few days. I swear it almost sounds like some made up bullshit to keep the minimum wage depressed.

In fairness, the Senate parliamentarian doesn't actually do anything interesting most of the time (in part because the Senate never does anything). I don't think they've had any major decisions regarding any legislation since Obamacare.

The parliamentarian is just doing her job in interpreting the rules (under which the minimum wage being eligible for reconciliation is, at best, a stretch). Firing her for doing her job would be pretty gross; it's not her fault that the Byrd rule exists.

I don't want to fire her. I just think if she's going to block minimum wage increases, she should be paid minimum wage. Same goes for all the senators that refuse to raise the minimum wage. Let their families live off that salary.

What again does her wage have to do with it? She isn't here to rule on the morality of the minimum wage. She is there to rule on whether the minimum wage can be added to a reconciliation bill. You are arguing that if she didn't do her job properly that she should be penalized financially? Like, how does that even make sense?

I mean, there's cause to be frustrated at the parliamentarian, I think. IIRC, they ruled that opening ANWR to drilling complied with the Byrd rule when the GOP wanted it in reconcilation back in 2017.

OTOH, they've also stopped some other sabotage attempts they made during Trump's term but overall it just sucks.

The parliamentarian was asked a question and provided an answer; she has no power to pass legislation. If the rules should be ignored, the Senate would be the ones to do so. People in this topic were saying for weeks they weren't sure minimum wage qualified for reconciliation anyway. Should they be compared to Nazis as well?

I was one of the ones who said I didn't think a minimum wage increase would pass the Byrd rule back at the start! But I mean, I think it's fair to be frustrated because I mean, again, opening ANWR passes muster but this doesn't after the CBO scoring?

The answer has always been abolish the filibuster but I mean... when this happened to the GOP they did fire the parliamentarian!

That said, I don't agree with the "drop her wage to the federal minimum" take. To the Senators opposed, sure, fine (but they're like all independently wealthy so this wouldn't really matter.) I'm just not going to begrudge anyone general frustration is all.

People keep trying to make this kids in cages biden thing out to be exactly what Trump did. Neglecting the fact that Trump was putting kids in literal cages and not the figurative cages they are up in arms about right now. We're about a month into the Presidency and Trump left a mess. There really isn't anything existing with the capacity to handle the mess Trump left with completely unattended children.

No I want all the problems in the world solved instantaneously and Biden's failure to do so basically makes him history's greatest monster.

Literally any step the Dems take right now that isn't bulldozing reform through as quickly as possible is a mistake and a betrayal to their constituents. I don't expect them to get everything done right away but they should sure as hell be expected to stop waffling around like leftist restraint is still something to be celebrated.

I'm pretty sure the plan on most reform is for the House to keep churning them out and force the Senate Republicans to filibuster them all and pray that that obstruction makes it untenable for Manchin and Sinema to cling to the absurd position of supporting the filibuster.

As for $15 minimum wage, I think it's no longer plausible it gets attached to the covid bill which leaves it in a bad place. I feel the best chance would be to "try again" with it attached to a major infrastructure bill (which is itself sorely needed)

But I expect a lot of frustration as this all plays out because it's all going to come down to Manchin and Sinema holding a progressive agenda (hell, any agenda) hostage and needing them to blink and it's not a sure thing they will. And it probably will take a fair bit of real time for the pressure to build and time isn't exactly something that can be wasted here but it probably will have to be because of them.
