Let it be known that according to TVTropes, Shantae is Turkish, not Arab. However, I listed her as Arab in my Excel sheet before looking up TVTropes, and Im way too lazy to change four letters. Man, Shantae. Has there ever been a more C-list character than her? Shes the very definition of character whos almost notable, but isnt, and I cant imagine that ever changing. Like is she the most famous Middle-Eastern video game character? I guess thats something.

Shantae is not a complex character. She is not a complex waifu. She likes helping people, she likes friendship, and she likes generally being happy and cool. There are no really heavy burdens weighing on her soul. She doesnt think anything is wrong with her belly dancer outfit, but she gets horribly embarrassed by a Princess Leia slave girl costume, which is like 10% more revealing. My point is that Shantae is a pretty happy-go-lucky waifu with no serious problems or concerns outside of how to solve her various adventures, which definitely has an appeal if youre looking for a waifu who isnt going to be grimdark some of the time. I cant even imagine a grimdark Shantae.

As far as Girlfriendness goes, I didnt count Shantae as really being an adventurer. She goes on the occasional adventure, but its not really her job, per se. She just occasionally has to go run around whipping things with her hair for a few days, then returns home. But that doesnt really help when her job is Guardian of Scuttle Town, which means she has to live in a tiny backwater in a lighthouse. I guess Im spoiled by living in my nice warm second floor apartment that Im typing this from right now, but I can only imagine a lighthouse is super drafty and unpleasant to live in. Im not crazy, right? It has to be like just nonstop drafts.

Im imagining Shantae as a pretty low maintenance waifu, you know? I dont think shed be particularly demanding, but shed still be available to spend time with. Like, I think shes exactly where she wants to be in life: at the top of a lighthouse, occasionally going on wacky adventures. She just seems a little too, I dont know, childish? to really have a long-term relationship with.

I have a question. What is the first example in modern fiction of superpowerful nigh-omnipotent little girl whos really a billion years old, outside of a horror context? Because it shows up all the time in Japanese works, but Im wondering if they cribbed it from the West. Thank God nobody nominated Nowi. I guess I should note that I used her main child form for the Attractiveness rating instead of her illusionary adult form.

Ignoring the whole child element, I wonder what a relationship with an immortal being whos hundreds of years old would actually be like. I cant imagine theres anything to talk about. Apparently, this particular one likes RPGs, so hey, theres at least that. And yeah, I can tell this waifu was nominated for the specific purpose of not just being an immortal ten year-old girl, but being an immortal ten year-old who acts like an evil sorceress in public, but whose dark secret is that she likes to act like her age when no one is around. I mean, I agree that its cute in a platonic sort of way. Its cute to be an omnipotent sorceress, but get cursed to go to high school forever. Its cute to have a reputation for being the most powerful and evil sorceress in the universe, then just not do anything evil and just be kind of a jerk. Thats the ultimate weapon of all tsunderes: just like no one remembers Darth Vader walking down hallways and only remember his badass moments, the only thing anyone will remember about tsunderes are the moments when theyre vulnerable enough to be adorable. I mean, an omnipotent vampire sounds like a pretty good girlfriend (ignoring the age issue), but I guess shell be in high school every day, so thats a bit of a limiter on the time and things available to her. Anyway, my point is just that this is a character whos funnier and cuter than she is likely to be a great girlfriend.

Hold on a second, she was in love with the protagonists father and also has a crush on Negi? Isnt that what happened in Indiana Jones 3?

Minor note: The picture for her I used is the only full-body color picture I could find in her normal form that wouldn't violate the ToS.

I dunno if it's even that common in the West other than vampires. I guess there's stuff where god manifests as a child, like Mass Effect, if you wanna count that sorta thing.

Basically, what is all comes down to with this waifu is her intensity. Its a weird element to base an entire waifu ranking around, but no one can stop me. This waifu is completely defined by how she stares at you while using a calm tone of voice to say things that are either completely insane or theoretically sane, but contextually given meaning that make them insane. Like, heres an exchange:

Do you want a girlfriend?
What happens if I say I do?
Then you will have a girlfriend, thats all.

Like, that doesnt sound so insane when written out, but the way she says it, the context of the scene, and the way she cocks her head while saying anything make her just sound weird and nuts. Everything with her sounds meaningful. Like, her asking her maybe-boyfriend to directly state what their relationship is sounds perfectly reasonable, but everything about the conversation feels completely wrong.

Like, shes described as a tsundere, but if thats the case, then shes some weird version of one Ive never seen before, a kind that constantly invades your personal space to be intentionally weird. She does have some moments of normality, but I wouldnt say theyre super frequent, right? On the other hand, I cant really call her a stalker waifu, but she definitely has of those vibes.

One thing that surprised me is when searching for information on her, I kept finding her on lists of waifus, or youtube videos calling her the best waifu, and stuff like that. This is one of the most bizarre and difficult waifus to rank so far, and Im still not sure if I did a good job of identifying her core issue or not.

I love Wiki pages made by one guy years ago that no one remembers anymore. Its where you get gems like she is tall and has a good body as the third line on the page. I realize that theres more context to that sentence than youd expect, but its still funny.

This is a waifu whos cute and pleasant and supportive and all of that, but clearly has massive personal space issues. But unlike Hitagi Senjougahara from one rank ago, Amane isnt a weirdo stalker creep, which is a big point in her favor. Like, a waifu playing footsie under the table at a restaurant is nowhere near the same league of annoying as a waifu who always acts like shes absent from her own body. Making perverted jokes, eh, whatever. These arent really big issues for me. A waifu whos the perfect cook? That earns her some points. A waifu whos the perfect driver of any vehicle? That earns her some points. But I can just say, under the Skills and Abilities tab of her Wiki page, someone has written this:

Big Sister Charisma: Because of her personality towards the younger one, Amane is often to be cherished as a big sister by anyone. However, this is not affecting Yuuji.

I obviously dont hold this random Wiki editors poor English skills against her, I just thought this was funny.

I think part of the problem with this waifu in particular is that shes defined by guilt over (thinking she is responsible for) getting the protagonists sister killed? I dont even know how to begin translating that into a general waifu ranking. Like, obviously shell behave differently around someone whose sister is not dead (in fact, I even have two not dead sisters), so if you eliminate that from the analysis, her score goes up a bit. By the way, this has nothing to do with anything, but when I looked her up on youtube for waifu moments, the second highest-rating video was in Italian.

Honestly? Amane seems like a perfectly normal, slightly more aggressive than average waifu if you subtract the guilt element. I can definitely see the appeal, but shes not making it into the upper tiers of waifudom or anything.

I would say that attractiveness is the easiest rank to do well on. I think generally, attractiveness has the highest numbers of all the categories.
