My understanding is that its thought that the RNA vaccines very likely will prevent a substantial amount of transmission. They just didnt gather the relevant data to actually demonstrate it.

(Of course, its certainly possible that it reduces symptoms by 95% but transmission by less than that).

That's good info, wang. Thanks.

I've seen a number of psa's that even if you get one of the vaccines you're going to want to act as though you have asymptomatic covid - don't get into unnecessary contact with people, take precautions etc. I'm sure it's tempting to try to return to a normal life though. Definitely a challenge ahead

One thing to know is that it takes like 10-14 days after the first shot for you to gain any immunity at all (but yeah, even after getting the second shot we will want people to be taking at least basic precautions until the virus's prevalence drops down to negligible levels)

House passed standalone $2000 checks. (They used a fast track process that required 2/3's and still got it): 275-134

231-2 by Dems (Votes against were Lipinski (lost his primary earlier in the year and will be out when Congress ends) and Schrader (OR-5))
44-130 by Republicans
0-2 by independents (Amash and Mitchell)

Well, yeah, in terms of meeting the expedited 2/3's needed.

House also just overrode the NDAA veto a few minutes ago: 322-87. (Original vote was 335-78.) Republicans went from 140-40 to 109-66. (Dems went from 195-37 to 212-20.) Not going to figure out the 26 Rs who flipped here I assume some article will do that shortly.

$2k checks?

Has to pass the Senate. Unfortunately, McConnell largely controls the business conducted so what I suspect will happen is that McConnell will never bring the House bill up for a vote and will instead make his own version of $2k checks but attach Trump's demands over repealing Section 230 and starting a voter fraud investigation to it. Such a bill will very likely be filibustered by Dems who will call bullshit on attaching those entirely unrelated issues to the checks when they can just take up the already passed House bill but McConnell will just ignore that and try to paint it as Dems voting against relief.

Schumer has said he will make a motion to proceed on the House bill but we'll see how that goes, I don't believe he can succeed if McConnell is determined to ensure he fails and can crush it on procedure.

Hypothetically, if the Senate took up the House bill and passed it it would go to Trump and if he signed it it would happen. But again, unfortunately, I would not get your hopes up. I expect McConnell to fuck it over and the $2k bill will die and we'll be left with $600 checks from the omnibus.

Vaccine distro has not been as smooth as it could be but its mostly fine and the story is overblown compared to bigger things on our plate. From what I know the 100M doses "by december" is slightly behind...but its literally just a week behind and they are on schedule to be distributed by the first week of January. So not even a week behind.

We're still on pace to have enough doses of vaccine "for all who want it" within the first 4 or 5 months of the year, way ahead of any pace anyone thought possible.

And while clearly the Trump administration isn't good at anything, calling it a "massive fuck up" probably is wrong. Its honestly one of the best things they've done in their 4 years. I know the bar is low, but its a lot of doses, despite people trying to make up a story, they hedged their bets fairly intelligently, and we're about 5-6 months from this thing being "over" in a sense with mass vaccine distribution.

A good chunk of this is of course owed to the US Dollar. As much as Republicans love to be disingenuous and claim the US Is drowning in debt, the fact is the dollar is stronger than ever and these companies want our money. Pfizer and Moderna are basically lining up to secure more of our money for more vaccine. We're basically skipping the line with some of these shipments that are coming despite not pre-ordering. We're the dudes on ebay paying $1500 for a PS5 because we can. And while this is more than we'd have had to pay if we had hindsight, its probably pretty break even for what we'd have paid if we pre-ordered too much of literally every vaccine candidate 6 months ago.

According to that thread, we'll be lucky to hit 20m by first week of Jan, not 100m. We are not remotely on that pace anymore.

In fact, the goal went from 100m to 40m in November, then down to 20m at beginning of December, and then first week of December they admitted even 20m was unrealistic. As of right now, we're only sitting at 2m vaccinated.

Yes but that number is down from a promised 100m and we're very likely to not even hit 20m by early Jan at this pace.

This is not "mostly fine" when they have to keep lowering the number to the point of just shrugging

Ehhh, I think this isn't quite the whole picture though. The long term goal was "enough vaccine by June".

We're still more than on pace to beat that especially with production and distribution ramping up.

Unless you think they are somehow hoarding vaccines, there is no problem. We got these vaccines in unprecedented record time. They are being distributed. Our health care system is a mess, yes. This wasn't suddenly going to fix that.

Unless you see moderna or pfizer going "lol no we cant give you any" there isn't really any reason to think the rollout is going to take longer than June.

Orange is getting ejected in a few weeks anyways, so competency is going to go up.

One way I look at it, and I understand its hard to stay positive in these times...If at any point earlier in the year you told us "We'll have a million people vaccinated by the end of the year" we'd probably have laughed and said there is no chance we have a vaccine by then.

That we have anything right now is a miracle. Science continues to bail humanity out as much as we try to destroy ourselves.

Well Pfizer already said dont expect substantial rollout until July so

You are literally just believing what the Trump admin is telling you for no reason. They said enough for anybody that wants one by month four or five of 2021. Since then, the end of year amount shrunk from 100m to 2m with 20m in first week of January maybe just trust us.

The problem is the vaccines ARENT getting distributed because there is literally no plan. The federal government is just saying you do it to the states and the states are going wait what how? and passing the buck to hospitals to figure it out. That is a problem. That is very much not a no problems here! We are very much not still on the original pace because that original pace said 100m by end of year. We are nowhere near that pace, so youre saying we are more than on pace based on literally nothing.

Yes, how its being handled could be fixed once Trump is out, but that doesnt magically make it not a problem right now. They very much are fucking it up, and its not overblown to say that.

When the EUA went out, they said they were expecting "100M doses by March".

I'm not sure where the end of the year number is coming from(Maybe from Trump, I don't know, I wouldn't trust anything he says). A quick lookup says those were from quotes back in June.

And sure, the plan sucks. We already know our health care system is a mess. I don't think anything here falls outside the line of expectations.
