I'm now imagining the Kool-Aid Man breaking through people's walls to deliver them checks and glasses of Great Bluedini, and then when the people get upset about their wall having a hole bashed through it in the middle of winter, he just says Mexico will pay for it and flees.

You can tell Biden doesn't want to cancel debt because he is trying to limit his own power about doing so.

The being willing to do 10k just sounds like giving something to people he promised to on something he doesn't want to do.

Biden worked hard for credit card companies for decades, why would he suddenly want to help debtors? He expressly campaigned on not canceling more than 10k of student debt.

If you want a President who's friendly to debtors, you should have voted for Trump. Who has already deferred student loans nearly a year with no interest or payments!

So a RV bomb went off in Nashville. Some think it was trying to destroy an ATT building. It broadcasted a warning saying it had a bomb and counted down and eventually blasted. Likely it was on Christmas day and had the warning to try and not hurt any people.

Motive still unknown. Also don't know if they have any suspects yet.

Pelosi, just like everyone else, knew that the unanimous consent request would not pass. While it was theatrics, it's also largely because she can't just summon the entire House back on such short notice during the holidays (that's more in the domain of a 9th level spell and Speaker of the House, largely being a homebrew Wizard/Bard multiclass, is limited to 7th level spell slots as the drawback of its multiclass and access to unique spells such as Hold Legislation.)

She's going to hold the roll call vote once they're actually back for reals on Monday.

I'm not even sure if the GOP blocked it. It's hard to read exactly what happened, but what I read seemed to be that the Democratic house member who leads a committee of some sort denied it because the gop leaders didn't agree to it (not that they disagreed to it) and that you cannot send a bill with unanimous consent without agreement from both sides.

Not sure if that's correct but it is what I think I gleam from it.

Oh, right, not sure we talked about this point but as far as I can tell, despite Congress technically passing it before the pocket veto deadline... I don't think it was "officially transmitted" to the White House until yesterday which means the 10 day clock didn't start until then.

...Which means Trump can pocket veto the COVID Relief and Government Funding bill by doing nothing because the clock skips Sundays so it doesn't expire until January 4 when Congress is constitutionally mandated to adjourn by noon on January 3.

(I'm actually not sure what happens in the mind-numbingly bizarre scenario of "can Trump just sit on it and pout for 9 days then sign it after Congress adjourns at the last second" so I'm just going to assume that that doesn't work and that if Trump does nothing by January 3rd the bill is dead. Also not 100% sure if the Senate can pull parliamentary bullshit to delay a veto override vote (but it's the Senate so "probably") making the effective time even less.)

Well, the government is only funded through (I think through/including, at least) Monday so if he sits on/vetoes the omnibus then the government will shutdown well before the other hard deadlines involving the pocket veto and Congress adjourning.

That said, if he were actually determined to do that, it's conceivable it wouldn't be fixed for a while. At the very least, while the House will be back on Monday for the roll call on $2000 checks and for the NDAA veto override, the Senate has shown no urgency despite the chaotic events of the past few days and is still not going to return until Tuesday. So even if they went back to passing short emergency CRs to keep the government open it would still be shut down for a bit since the Senate isn't even going to be around to vote on one until after a shutdown begins. And really if we go that route it'd be a bit weird to imagine Trump signing such CRs and we'd be in the exact same situation as we are now anyway.

If he refuses to sign or veto anything he could unilaterally force a shutdown until Bidens inauguration, right?

Unless they impeached/removed him, at least

Technically, I think the new Congress could hypothetically veto override him if they could get a bill/CR to him.

New Congress can convene at Noon on Jan 3. From there there should be 14 days until the inauguration (again skipping Sundays since they don't count against the time a President has to sign/not sign a bill) so if they could get a new bill to him by Jan 8 he'd have to act. Either he vetoes (but he could stall that out the full 10 days sure) and Congress would be able to override or he does nothing in which case it automatically becomes law (the pocket veto thing only works when Congress goes out of session and it would be pretty trivial for them to stay in session to prevent that from happening. It's only an issue now because the 116th Congress literally ends on Jan 3 with the new Congress coming in.)

Thaaaaaat said, the new Congress would be starting from the very beginning of the process again because all bills not signed into law at the end of the Congress are dead and I don't know if they could fast track something from scratch that quickly without unanimous consent which lets them cut through much of the process stuff... and given you only need one guy like Rand Paul or any number of House GOP crazies (and we have literal QAnon believers in now) to ruin that... idk.

So like, tl;dr: Probably? Technically if Congress tried to speedrun legislation they might be able to force a reopening over Trump's objections like 4-5 days before Biden's inauguration if he chose to obstruct them but I think that would require no one in Congress to be an ass about it and even one could probably slow it down. But even if they broke a speed record somehow Trump could unilaterally stall them nearly all the way, until Jan 14th or Jan 15th at least (in the almost impossible scenario Congress gets him a bill from scratch in the literal half of a day that is their first day.)

It just goes to show how stupid the general populace is that either if them have a chance. Here's hoping the strong uptick in black voters in early voting from the general is a good sign.

Massachusetts and Illinois both voted in Republican senators in off year elections right after Obamas first election.

Off year elections are incredibly tough for the party in the presidency as people get complacent. I think it would be expected for Democrats to lose this, and if they somehow won then we just elect Abrams emperor of getting out the vote for the rest of her life.
