Would you try meat that comes from a lab rather than an animal?

Singapore is hardly 'arrived'.

I'd try it for sure.

As long as it's safe, tastes right and is priced reasonably, I'm indifferent where my meat comes from.

Personally, yeah, though I'm pessimistic it will catch on at a large scale, which is really where the value comes from. It could potentially be an environmental revolution. But it feels like there are going to be (especially here in 'Murica) too many technological, lobbying and cultural barriers.

It's interesting in that article seeing how expensive it is, but even compared to how it was and what they're projecting in the future, maybe it's possible to make it cost-effective. I mean I remember flat TVs used to go for like $12,000. The tech barriers are the ones I'm probably most optimistic about even though it sounds like some sci-fi shit

It's meat. It's grown using the same chemical reactions and processes your body naturally uses to produce tissue. It's just that the meat was never attached to a nervous system or a living animal. Theoretically it should be indistinguishable from 'real' meat once they get the process perfected.

Why not just save time and make a designer orgasm that just buds off tunors that are non harmful to the originating organism. Like cystypigs from outer worlds. Also alot of these so called no kill meats survive off of serum of the progenitor animal or compatible creature. Like for beef tissue they harvest unborn calves and drain the blood when the mother is killed.

Well for one thing lab grown meat exists and has been proven safe, and the other thing youre describing is fictional, theres no method to grow tumors on a living thing without harming it or to grow tumors that would be safe to eat. Who tf would want to eat tumors anyway theyd be disgusting.

They also only have to get a sample from a cow similar to a biopsy which people get done all the time in the medical field. After that the sample is cultured and they can use that culture to keep growing more meat continuously. So it isnt like they have to keep harming animals. Animals arent involved after the sample is taken.

@Mead you cant just grow animal tissue in vats like mold grows on agar. It needs a solution to transport nutrients and absorb waste hince the need for serum.

This is just the first of many websites that can just be found by looking up b ovine serum lab grown meat.
https://slate.com/technology/2017/07/the-gruesome-truth-about-lab-grown-meat.html
now that post list it in a gruesome and biased format
Now here is another that is listing the oroborus art kit which would allowed cultured cells with fbs
https://www.msn.com/en-us/foodanddrink/foodnews/scientists-have-created-an-edible-steak-made-from-human-cells-heres-why/ar-BB1baG68

As far as made up content I think if a person will eat casa marzu (living maggot cheese) I dont think there would be much fight. As far as designer organisms people have grown hair from cactus, insulin from yeast, silk from pig milk. Saying a tumor is to far is just ignorance of what things people will do to indulge themselves.

Well this particular articles subjects do use fbs as currently there is no current plant based alternative. They have the results reported as only a small amount of fbs left in the tissue. If you could find one please post a source link whatever. However every la ab thats been newsworthy uses fbs. Heck as far as I have seen they havent came up with anything more reliable thans serum blood for cancer cell growth either.

Honestly because of hubris. People want to put vegan title on met so they can feel better about the grease running down their chins (thats x2). Its kinda how alot of things are labeled as gluten free, no added sugar, transfat free, antibiotic free. I mean I have never had a dried apple with gluten but there are gluten free ones available, or antibiotic free chicken were as if your in the us all chicken has to be antibiotic free if used for meat.

People want to feel they are doing something good when is actually just as horrific or more damaging to the environment like with organic products

I dont think anybody is trying to make lab grown meat seem like anything other than meat. A lot of the marketing is based around convincing people that its just meat.

Theres no way that cultured meat could be considered vegan. Its clearly an animal product.

I don't really know much about the specific processes involved but I thought the idea was to get to the point where you eventually don't need any live animals to grow it. Hopefully the technology gets there and if it doesn't then I don't really know what the point is. I agree that the food industry is overloaded with scammy products based on bad science, but I don't think you can just automatically assume everything has some secret intent behind it. Considering it's not even a wide consumer product yet I'd at least like to give the benefit of the doubt until it hits that stage and hopefully the process is different by then

You would be suprised. I have alot of family that have religous objections to food. Then I have family that has moral objections. There is already a vegan ripple saying that if a meat is cultivated in a bioreacter then it is more veg than meat as no animal is harmed or killed. Currently the meat cultivated is only listed as no kill as it does use animal products (from non living animal tissue).

The vegans interested in this either for there own personal consumption or for pets are looking for plant protein raised tissue as this means an animal is not being exploited, harmed or killed. They look at like the spit or swallow arguement

I actually ask that question to a lot of vegans/vegetarians, their biggest concern (if it isn't medical), is if one animal was hurt for it.
It really depends though, and I haven't had anyone get offended at the question yet.

You might be surprised. Flour ends up in a ton of stuff, due to how incredibly useful its various physical properties are. Pieces of apple may have been dredged in flour before being dried to keep them from sticking together, for example, which would leave residual gluten (and for particularly sensitive people that actually have celiac disease, that's enough to be a problem).
