When I was a kid, we spent about a year? maybe two? renting a farmhouse that was surrounded on three sides by pasture for cows. So... yes.

I've seen a cow, but not up close. My parents had friends that owned a farm but they never had cows, surprisingly difficult farm animals to take care of compared to pigs, chickens, lambs, and turkeys (all of which they had). They used to buy a pig every year from the friend, one pig once butchered could fill a full size freezer and give us enough pork for pretty much the entire year.

Had an aunt and uncle who had a farm that my aunt's (via marriage) family had had since the 1870s that was given to her family for free in a Homestead Act and it was passed down in her family so I spent time there as a kid and grew up around livestock.

Their kids now live on that land so it's been in the family for over 140 plus years at least and again that land was not purchased because my aunt's family received it in a Homestead Act. Her fam is from Ireland.

I only mentioned the Homestead Act part because some White people tend to think the Government never gave White people anything and that's simply not true. One of my uncles started a business that still stands today and he got the money from a GI Bill loan. He served in the Korean War so we need to understand that we have all been lied to and told that it's those people who want to live off the government tit and that's not true.

FDR's New Deal did the same thing in that it put wealth or at the least the chance to attain some wealth at the hands of White people in the 1930s and 1940s and now today people act as if they did something all on their own and that's simply not true.

I find that news surprising, but I guess it also depends on where a person grows up and what their socioeconomic status is like. I'm pretty sure I had school field trips to farms, I know my family took trips to farms, when I was visiting my relatives in the old country they had a farm, and there are some farms within my area (some of which have livestock, some don't)

Aren't cows practically everywhere outside of cities and suburbs? Have these kids never gone on a single road trip? My work takes me to a semi-rural area every day and I see many, many farm animals. People keep goats as pets.

It does depend a bit on where you are. When I took a road trip through Newfoundland, we didn't see a single cow the entire time we were there, even with a few detours off into small towns for pit stops. Some regions just aren't big on cattle, so if somebody's entire experience with driving through rural areas has been in one of those regions, I could see them not having seen a cow before.

"More than half" seems really high, though. That's just kind of weird.

That or more likely it's not something that's a priority for many of them. Bear in mind that only 15% mention that they've never left their birth state. You could easily make the argument if most respondents hadn't left their birth state, but if they're already traveling then it's a matter of them going other places.

Kids will go to the Jersey Shore or Cancun (excluding the 42% who report never leaving the country), but they aren't checking out farms.

My 5th grade teacher took us on a field trip to the (at the time) only traffic light in our town. I think that was also the field trip where my class clogged a toilet at an ice cream place we stopped at on the way there, and some kid got pushed through a store window during a fight.

The teacher retired after our class, I sometimes wonder why...

I don't think we ever went to a farm on a field trip. I do remember going to the Simon Wiesenthal Center, which is a pretty freaking heavy thing for a kid to experience.
