Hot take, the moon landing conspiracy isn't stupid. The reason is because, unlike all the other conspiracies listed, it's the only one where the conspiracy actually would be simpler than what really happened - it would be much easier to fake the moon landing than to actually land on the moon. Plus, given the political motivations of the time, faking the moon landing is something that they really might have tried to do if they thought they could get away with it. I believe it is still deeply unlikely, but what makes it at least interesting to consider is that it asks of you to believe an easier explanation. The other conspiracies all involve things that are way more insane and difficult to believe than the truth which is what makes them stupid as hell.

Based solely on how dumb it is, gotta go with Flat Earth. There's too much in our everyday life that's based on it and relying on man-made structures we have orbiting the earth it's impossible to take any bit seriously questioning the science beyond fantasy role-play of what such a flat earth world might be like (which admittedly can be a fun consideration... for fiction)

Yeah I mean this is why it's INCREDIBLY unlikely at this point. Plus, we do demonstrably have proof that the technology for us to have gotten to the moon exists, so at that point the moon landing being real is pretty damn likely. But, considering the circumstances of the space race and how important we considered winning it to be, it's not thoroughly implausible to imagine a scenario in which we would have faked all or at least some of the details. I think skepticism is actually warranted on it!

Depends on your definition of dumbest.

That's what makes the 5G thing even more stupid than flat earth to me. Flat earth is dumb as hell but at least it is at least vaguely understandable that someone who's really gullible and has no trust in science at all would feel with their own eyes and experiences that it makes sense for the planet to be flat. Like... it's really stupid, but it's basically impossible to prove otherwise simply through evidence - you sort of just have to believe that science (albeit extremely basic science) is telling the truth. I don't have any personal experience of the planet being a globe, aside from being able to triangulate this idea by looking at the sky, but even then I have to accept certain axioms as being true. It's just very easy to do because the science is so ridiculously settled that they knew about this thousands of years ago.

The 5G thing is like... just completely fantasizing the idea of 5G being DISEASE-CARRYING MIND CONTROL WAVES or whatever completely out of whole cloth. Instead of imagining that science is wrong, you're imagining that science is way more powerful than even remotely possible but they're lying to you. Flat earth is simply a misunderstanding of the reality of the world, the 5G conspiracies demand that engineers actually be capable of things that they are just flat out not capable of because it's completely fucking impossible.

Chemtrails is in the same boat for me because it's like, looking at fucking water vapor and just imagining that they're spraying chemicals in the air for ??? purposes, as if that would even do anything. Totally nuts.

Pizzagate goes way deeper than just Hillary Clinton and applies to the belief that the entire democratic party is involved in a massive pedophilia scheme that still somehow all started in the basement of a pizza restaurant, and it's the progenitor conspiracy theory behind Q, which is something that about 30% of americans currently follow. It's completely fucknuts ridiculous but is somehow fueling a ton of anti-democratic resentment in the country at the moment

The main problem I have with this argument when i see it is why bother faking it another 5 more times after the first one time since all it would do is increase the amount of people in on the hoax. Also when talking about the moon landing with people in general I'm always surprised to find out how many people actually don't know that we went back to the moon after that first trip.

It probably doesn't necessitate it but the 5G nonsense came in many flavors. It could cause cancer, COVID, mind control, I think I once read weather control at one point. It was like real-life magic.

I can absolutely appreciate people voting for flat earth here but Pizzagate and 5G really are some next-level stupidity. Flat earth "just" requires you to be so un-curious that you go "my eyes tell me the earth is flat as far as my eye can see and that never changes!" and, yes, ignoring basic science. But you need to up the crazy several notches from "ignore basic science" to get to those two.
